Rebirth in the Apocalypse: Shadow of the Dark Night

Returning Home - I

Returning Home - I

Oct 26, 2024

"Why was I sleeping in a coffin? Well, to explain that, we have to go back to my past. How should I describe my past? It's rather plain, nothing extraordinary about it. If you really want to know about my origins, I suppose I'll have to start with my parents. The story is long and somewhat dull, but if you're truly interested, I'll tell it. However, after sleeping for so long, my mind isn't functioning very well, so there might be parts that even I can't remember.

My father was an ordinary man until he turned thirty. During his time, the country was experiencing a period of peaceful development. Although there were various issues, for an average citizen like my father, all he could do was endure and comply.

To be precise, my father started a small business when he was twenty-nine. He and my mother worked hard running a tiny health supplement store. What? What are health supplements? They are products that can improve one's health when consumed, that’s what they are in simple terms.

Despite everything, through years of hard work, my parents managed to save some money. However, at this point, the country's economy began to experience some turmoil. What? What is the economy? Oh, that's quite difficult to explain, please don’t interrupt me, let me continue.

Where was I? As you can see, my memory isn't great because I've been asleep for too long, so please don’t interrupt me again. Ah, right, the country was facing some unrest. My father never told me the root causes of these disturbances because I had just been born then, the youngest child in the family.

Looking back now, those upheavals weren't necessarily bad, at least not for our family. Due to luck or perhaps the business acumen he gained from his early commercial experiences, my father seized this opportunity and expanded his business significantly within a mere decade."

I can still vaguely remember those days. Father transformed the health supplement company into one primarily focused on manufacturing various external trauma medicines. Since Father and Mother were still relatively young and had established some connections from their earlier years, the company's products became associated with the government, which led to a significant expansion of Father's business.

I'm not very knowledgeable about business matters; basically, our family situation was as such. Now, let me talk about myself.

Perhaps because both my parents were quite old when they had me, and I'm not sure why Mother could conceive me at that age. I faintly recall Father mentioning once that it seemed to be due to a failure in contraception or something similar. Of course, none of that matters. What does matter is that I've never been healthy since birth, always plagued by one ailment or another. Therefore, no one in the family, from the oldest to the youngest, ever disciplined this child who was weak from birth.

At that time, my eldest brother had already grown up and become a trusted aide to my parents, helping with the business. My second brother and third sister were studying abroad in different places, doing quite well. But I, who was only around thirteen or fourteen, had little interest in such things, spending my days idling and playing.

It was during that year when I turned fourteen that I contracted a strange illness. Its name was long and complicated, supposedly named after its discoverer and the first patient who died from it, though I can't remember it anymore.

From crutches to wheelchair to bedridden, I was ill for more than ten years. During this time, I seldom interacted with the outside world, and my parents rarely told me anything. Due to my illness, I couldn't even watch anything; I could only listen to the maid read books to me every day.

One day, while I was listening to a book in bed, Father walked into the ward excitedly and said that there was a way to treat my illness. Mother cried with joy, and it was then that I noticed how much older and grayer my parents had become. By that year, I was already twenty-four, having lain in bed for a full decade.

Father didn't tell me the exact treatment method, only that I would need to sleep for a very long time, and when I woke up, I might not be able to see my loved ones anymore, but perhaps my illness would be cured.

For someone who has been bedridden for ten years, unable to bask in the sunlight, only able to listen to books, and whose eyesight was deteriorating, I consider myself lucky. At least I come from a loving family, and my parents have the means to provide me with medical treatment. My eldest brother also secretly, or perhaps with their tacit approval, taught me about women.

"I just didn’t expect that after waking up, I would see all of you."

After hearing the young man's account, none of the villagers present spoke. From their expressions, it was clear that few understood what the young man was talking about.

"Well, I've heard of people waking up from coffins before," Old Luo sighed, looking at the puzzled faces around him, and continued, "But this is the first time I’ve actually encountered such a thing."

"Tell us your name first," Old Luo asked further.

"Wang Ping, the 'Ping' in peace," the young man explained.

"No one in the village knows how to read, including me. My father knew a bit, but by my generation, almost no one understands the meaning of those symbols anymore," Old Luo's son interjected.

Wang Ping frowned in confusion and distress, then surveyed the house he was staying in. It was small, built entirely of compacted earth bricks, crude and rough, with a conical roof that had a hole in the center. However, to protect his eyes, the opening was covered very tightly, making the inside pitch-black. Only a few rays of sunlight penetrated through cracks in the walls, allowing vague shapes to be discerned. It looked like a place used for village meetings. The only comforting aspect was that the house was drafty, so there wasn’t any particularly foul smell.

"Who am I, and why I was sleeping in the coffin you mentioned, I've already explained. So now, can anyone tell me where I am and what era it is?" Wang Ping asked, somewhat distressed.

"Now isn't the time to talk about that. We can discuss it later. We now have a general idea of who you are, but there are some urgent questions we need to ask you," said Old Luo's son, the current village head, known among the villagers as Headman Luo.

Headman Luo was a bit annoyed. Although he was the village head, many decisions were still made by the elders. This insect disaster was indeed caused by humans, but according to the few villagers who returned from the tunnel, the woman had been shot and stabbed yet still hadn’t died. Not only did she crawl into the coffin, but she also dragged the dead body out. The most troubling issue wasn't that the dead person came back to life, but how to deal with the half-dead woman.

Fortunately, Li Shun, who went down the tunnel last, didn't make a mistake. Seeing that the woman’s body, except for her head, was submerged in the coffin fluid, he guessed that the liquid was peculiar. He didn’t dare touch the woman but left two villagers to guard the area and first carried the frightened young man back to the village. His reasoning wasn’t wrong either; since the young man had come back to life from the coffin, he must not be an ordinary person and should at least know whether there are any treasures in this ruin.

Wang Ping nodded somewhat resignedly. He tried to move his body, but it was not only difficult but also heavy, probably due to the prolonged sleep. However, his body did feel more responsive than before; at least his ten fingers and ten toes could move. This was a significant improvement over his condition before he fell asleep.

"Do you know if there's anything unusual about the coffin you were sleeping in?"

"No, I was anesthetized in a hospital, and when I woke up, I was here."

"Do you know where you were anesthetized?"

"Switzerland"

"Switzerland? What kind of place is that?"

"Well, we're speaking Chinese, so I guess I should be in China, right? Switzerland is in Europe, far away from here."

"Forget it, do you know if there are any treasures where you were sleeping? Your father, based on what you said, although I don’t understand most of it, must have been very powerful, right? He should have left you a lot of treasures, shouldn’t he?"

"I don’t know. Father only said that I would recover when I wake up, and everything would be arranged by my elder brother. If my elder brother is not around, his descendants will take care of me."

Headman Luo sighed helplessly. It seemed that they hadn’t obtained any useful information from this young man, and had even brought trouble to the village. At the very least, if that woman had accomplices, it would be a big problem.

"Your body is very strange. Two of us barely managed to carry you out of the tunnel. If you can walk now, follow us. We’ll explain the questions you had on the way." Old Luo looked at his son asking a bunch of questions without getting any useful answers and interrupted, "We discussed it just now. Has the swarm of insects at the village entrance dispersed? Everyone, hurry home and pack up, leave immediately. As for that woman, inform Luo San in the tunnel to chop her up! Don’t leave any trouble behind!"

When Wang Ping heard the words “chop her up,” he looked at Old Luo with surprise, but soon regained his composure. He knew that his life was now in the hands of these ragged villagers, who could almost be called savages, so it was best not to say too much.

Just as everyone was dispersing from the meeting hall, a muffled sound came from the front of the village!

The villagers’ faces changed! That was the sound of the musket fired by the guards at the village entrance!

Old Luo, having seen his fair share of the world, immediately shouted, "Don’t panic! All able-bodied men, grab your weapons! Go to the village entrance. If we can’t hold them off, set fire to the drawbridge! The elderly and children should pack up and evacuate through the rear mountain! Wang Ping! You’re not mobile! Follow them to the rear mountain!"

The villagers quickly calmed down from their initial panic. Years of living on the wilderness had made them endure many harsh situations, and they immediately followed Old Luo’s orders and took action.

Wang Ping saw the outside world for the first time after waking up. Strangely, his eyes showed no sensitivity to light despite the long period of sleep. Even after the brief semi-darkness inside the house, he shouldn't have recovered so quickly. However, Wang Ping didn't have the time to quietly ponder this.

Looking up, he realized he was in a circular mountain pass. Observing the sun, it seemed to be setting. The surrounding land exhibited an eerie reddish-brown color. Apart from the dark green crops visible in the fields, the mountains and fields around were sparsely dotted with green and brown plants. A mountain breeze blew, carrying only the smell of dust, without any freshness of mountain vegetation. Looking around, he saw primitive mud houses, and the villagers' attire made Wang Ping think he had returned to a primitive society. However, looking at himself, he was also wearing the skin of some unknown animal. Though it smelled a bit, it wasn't too strange and was still tolerable for Wang Ping.
