Rise of the Dominant Son-in-Law

Token of love

Token of love

Oct 26, 2024

The banquet of the class reunion has officially begun.
This time, about fifty of Yao Jing's high school classmates came, and with their partners, nearly eighty people attended the gathering.
Almost eighty people were either eating, chatting, reminiscing, drinking merrily, or playing with children nearby.
This scene looked quite harmonious.
However, regardless of what these people were doing, their gazes were often vaguely fixed on Yao Jing, and now and then, one could hear teasing laughter coming from them.
"Don’t think I don’t know why you asked Zhi Ming to bring me to this class reunion," Yao Jing said lightly, holding a tall wine glass, standing next to Song Si Qing.
"I have no ulterior motive!" Song Si Qing said, glancing sideways with a hint of guilt, not daring to meet Yao Jing's gaze.
"Don’t have such thoughts in the future; I don’t like it," Yao Jing sighed.
"I don’t know what you’re talking about," Song Si Qing replied.
At that moment, Lin Zhi Ming approached with a tray of food.
"Wow, you really splurged; everything looks great," Lin Zhi Ming laughed.
"A man must spend money for a woman's reputation, understand?" Song Si Qing said while sneaking a glance at Yao Jing's bag.
"Do you know how much Jing Jing's bag costs?" Lin Zhi Ming asked with a smile.
"It's just a fake bag; how much can it be worth, maybe three or four thousand," Song Si Qing said dismissively.
Lin Zhi Ming smiled but didn’t say much; he could tell Song Si Qing was biased against him. Since that’s the case, if she insisted that the bag was worth over a million, she wouldn’t believe it no matter what. It was just like earlier, when everyone was misled by He Shu Hui, thinking the bag he bought for Yao Jing was a fake. He wouldn’t explain it; explaining would only seem insecure, while not explaining would at least not make things too awkward.
As for when everyone would learn the truth, Lin Zhi Ming didn’t care. Whether it was buying bags, clothes, or driving a Rolls Royce, he only wanted Yao Jing to feel his care as a husband; it had nothing to do with showing off.
Of course, if conditions allowed, he wouldn’t mind appropriately flaunting a bit to slap some faces, but such things depended on opportunity. You couldn’t just throw a few hundred million in someone’s face, right? Or pull out your phone and show everyone your WeChat or Alipay balance? That would be quite low-class.
Lin Zhi Ming glanced at his phone; it was already seven thirty, but the necklace he ordered had yet to arrive.
He felt a bit puzzled; his subordinates usually wouldn’t delay his matters unless some irresistible force intervened.
Just then, Lin Zhi Ming’s phone rang.
He took a quick look at the phone, casually handed the tray to Song Si Qing, and then turned to walk aside.
"What is he doing? Does he think I'm a waiter?!" Song Si Qing exclaimed, looking at the tray in her hands.
"What's wrong with helping him out a bit? It's not going to kill you!" Yao Jing said with a smile.
"It should be you, his wife, who helps him! Jing Jing, you two are bullying me!" Song Si Qing pouted, looking aggrieved.
Yao Jing laughed and looked into the distance.
Lin Zhi Ming was standing in the shadows nearby, holding his phone.
"Boss, there was an accident at the highway exit leading to Billy Manor, causing severe traffic jams. We are currently arranging for a drone to deliver the items you requested to Billy Manor, which should arrive in about two minutes. Boss, I sincerely apologize for the delay; please punish me." A man's voice came from Lin Zhi Ming’s phone.
"It’s only a few minutes late; it’s fine. Is everything okay with you guys?" Lin Zhi Ming asked.
"Everything's fine; it’s just that the highway is blocked, and our car can’t get through. Fortunately, there’s a drone on the vehicle," the voice on the other end said.
"That’s good. I'm on the lawn; just have the drone deliver it directly to me!" Lin Zhi Ming said.
"Yes!"
After hanging up, Lin Zhi Ming turned back to Yao Jing’s side.
At this moment, quite a few people were standing beside Yao Jing, mostly women, including He Shu Hui.
He Shu Hui had actually changed into a different outfit; she had been wearing a red formal dress, but now she was in a gold low-cut dress.
Around He Shu Hui's exposed chest was a necklace.
The pendant of the necklace was a blue heart-shaped gemstone, the size of a pigeon’s egg, which sparkled brilliantly under the lights.
The women gathered around Yao Jing were discussing it in whispers.
Lin Zhi Ming walked over and happened to hear their chatter.
"Shu Hui, your necklace is really beautiful; I’ve never seen such a large gemstone in my life!" a girl exclaimed.
"This is the token of love my husband gave me when we got married," He Shu Hui said sweetly, wrapping her arm around Zhou Wen Wei’s.
"That token must be expensive, right?" someone asked.
"Money is just a material thing; as long as Shu Hui is happy, it doesn’t matter how much it costs!" Zhou Wen Wei modestly waved his hand. He didn’t say how much the necklace was worth, but everyone knew it was definitely no less than a million.
For women, a piece of jewelry worth a million was undoubtedly a dream come true.
At tonight's class reunion, many women wore their most valuable jewelry to stand out, and some even paid to rent jewelry. However, their tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of pieces paled in comparison to He Shu Hui’s necklace.
Everyone was subtly glancing at each other's jewelry, hoping to find something inferior to boost their own confidence.
In doing so, they were all surprised to find that Yao Jing wasn’t wearing a necklace at all.
Yao Jing had only a fake shoulder bag and a rather old-looking gold ring on her ring finger; nothing else at all!
At this moment, everyone’s confidence surged; the most beautiful Yao Jing, with only a single ring, looked too shabby.
Many felt a sense of pride; although they might not be as attractive as Yao Jing, their lives were certainly better than hers. At least their husbands weren’t wimps; at least they wore diamond rings and gemstone necklaces.
"Jing Jing, what token did your husband give you when you got married? He comes from a prestigious family; that token must be extraordinary, right?" He Shu Hui asked with a smile.
"We got married rather hurriedly, so we didn’t prepare many things, and we’re both quite casual people, so we didn’t have a token of love," Yao Jing said with a smile.
"I don’t believe it!" He Shu Hui laughed. "The Lin family is a prominent family; how could the second young master of the Lin family not even have a decent token when he gets married?"
"Exactly, Yao Jing, how could you not have a token? Show us; don’t hide it!" someone egged on.
As soon as one person began to egg her on, others immediately followed suit.
Yao Jing frowned slightly.
She was a strong person at work, but she was much more laid-back in life. However, the way so many people were teasing her made her a bit angry. In her view, a token of love was a very private thing. If you want to show it off to others, that’s your business; if I say I don’t want to show it or that I don’t have one, and you still force me to show it, that’s a bit too much.
Yao Jing was not someone who wouldn’t fight back when attacked; this was evident from her confrontation with Fan Yu Tong in the Chanel store.
Just as Yao Jing was about to retort, Lin Zhi Ming came to her side.
Lin Zhi Ming smiled and took Yao Jing's hand, then said to those around them, "When Jing Jing married me, I wasn’t doing well in my family, so I didn’t have the ability to buy a token of love. But fortunately, over the years, Jing Jing has always been by my side without wavering, which has touched me greatly. This time, I want to take this opportunity, in front of everyone, to give Jing Jing the token of love I just bought! I hope our feelings for each other can always remain the same!"
Upon hearing this, Yao Jing suddenly pulled her hand away from Lin Zhi Ming, looking somewhat embarrassed as she said, "What are you doing? We’re just an old married couple; why make a big deal out of a token of love and make us the laughing stock?"
Seeing Yao Jing's reaction, Lin Zhi Ming understood what she was thinking. He leaned close to her ear and whispered, "It’s just a gift. Don’t think too much."
"It’s unnecessary," Yao Jing replied.
"It is necessary," Lin Zhi Ming nodded.
"Then what token of love did you prepare for Yao Jing? Show us!" He Shu Hui said with a smile.

Lin Zhiming smiled and turned to look at the sky.

A low rumbling sound faintly echoed from above. Everyone followed his gaze, watching as a white drone flew in from a distance.

Moments later, the drone hovered before Lin Zhiming. He reached out, retrieving an exquisite box that hung below it, then turned to face Yao Jing.

Yao Jing's eyes darted away, unable to meet Lin Zhiming's gaze. It was the first time in four years of marriage that she felt nervous in front of him; even when he recited sweet wedding vows, her heart had remained calm.

“Thank you,” Lin Zhiming said solemnly, looking at Yao Jing.

That was all he said.

After speaking, he opened the box. As the light fell upon it, a brilliant glow radiated outward.

When everyone saw what was inside the box, they collectively gasped.

It was a breathtaking diamond necklace!

The necklace was laid out in a net-like pattern, with a diamond at every intersection. These diamonds formed a web, reflecting light off each other, shimmering like the vast galaxy.

But that wasn't all; at the bottom of this diamond net hung a red gemstone.

The gemstone was the size of an egg, shaped not oval but somewhat resembling a drop of water.

Such a form was extremely rare among gemstones.

“What kind of necklace is this? It looks really nice,” He Shuhui said, forcing a smile that looked stiff.

“This must be synthetic red crystal; natural red crystal doesn’t come this big!” someone commented.

“This diamond must also be synthetic, right? If these were natural diamonds, this necklace would cost tens of millions!” another person chimed in.

The crowd nodded in agreement.

“I see, I thought so… But even if it’s synthetic, it’s still quite impressive and beautiful!” He Shuhui laughed.

“No, this is not synthetic!” Zhou Wenwei, who had been silent, suddenly spoke up.

Everyone turned to look at Zhou Wenwei, including Yao Jing.

“This… this is clearly the ‘Tears of the Goddess,’ which sold for 4.5 million dollars at Christie’s summer auction just a few hours ago!” Zhou Wenwei exclaimed excitedly.

At a lively class reunion, Yao Jing felt uneasy under the watchful eyes and murmurs of those around her. Her friend Song Siqing's jokes did little to alleviate her discomfort, while Lin Zhiming stood nearby, preparing to present a special token of love.

When a drone delivered a beautifully crafted box, everyone's attention shifted. Lin Zhiming opened the box to reveal a dazzling diamond necklace, leaving the crowd in awe. However, Zhou Wenwei revealed that the necklace was the "Tears of the Goddess" that had just sold at auction for $4.5 million, shocking everyone. Yao Jing's emotions were complicated as she faced this extravagant gift, leaving the biggest question of the reunion hanging: how would she respond?
