Su Ning paused for a moment and said somewhat awkwardly, “My dad is still at his old job, and my mom works at the Industrial and Commercial Bureau.”
Zheng Zheng understood immediately; he guessed that Su Ning's parents probably held a decent position but didn't want to say it out loud. He jokingly remarked, “Civil servants can’t afford to have daughters who wear Chanel and carry Hermes bags, you know.”
Su Ning giggled, “A lot of people say that! Actually, these clothes and bags were all given to me by my cousin. She runs a big company in the fashion trade. She's really nice to me.”
Zheng Zheng realized he had worried for nothing. With the government's strong anti-corruption campaign, they were targeting both the big tigers and the little flies, so he wasn't afraid that Su Ning's family was raking in black money. Just then, the waiter brought over some fragrant, colorful dishes. It was indeed a signature dish from the Bihai Qionglou; just looking at it was appetizing.
Su Ning had always appeared cute and elegant, but at this moment, she completely tore off the pretense, revealing her foodie nature. The frequency at which she picked up her chopsticks and the speed at which she swallowed were truly astonishing to Zheng Zheng. However, even with her rapid consumption, she still maintained her beauty and charm.
While they were enjoying their meal, a tall, lavishly dressed young man approached, guided by a waiter. He scanned the room and quickly spotted Su Ning, his eyes lighting up with joy as he walked over. But as he got closer and saw the pile of empty plates on their table, his smile faltered for a moment before he quickly regained his composure. “Sorry I’m late, Su Ning.”
With oily lips and cheeks stuffed, Su Ning pointed to the seat across from her and mumbled, “It’s okay, come eat.”
Seeing the girl he liked sitting closely next to a stranger, Wu Yunyi felt a surge of displeasure. “Bro, how about we switch seats?”
Before Zheng Zheng could respond, Su Ning shot him a sharp look and said, “You can sit wherever you want, but why should we change seats just because you showed up?”
Wu Yunyi forced a smile. “No problem, I’ll just sit across from you.”
As soon as he sat down and arranged his utensils, Zheng Zheng slid a large fish bone over to him, smiling eagerly, “Bro, this is especially saved for you.”
Wu Yunyi glanced at it and felt his face drop; all the meat had been picked off, leaving just the skeleton. Was this for feeding a person or a cat?
Just then, Su Ning nodded vigorously, “Yeah, Wang Lu said you love to nibble on fish heads, so we specially saved it for you.”
Wu Yunyi had to swallow his anger, cursing Wang Lu in his mind as he forced a smile. “Really? She must have remembered it wrong. But since it’s from you, Su Ning, I’ll definitely eat it all.”
Su Ning’s expression instantly shifted, like flipping a page in a book. She beamed with triumph, radiating happiness.
Unfortunately, Wu Yunyi misunderstood, thinking he had moved her. Feeling spirited, he picked up his chopsticks and started noisily chewing the fish bones.
Seeing this, Zheng Zheng casually picked out all the fish bones from the plate and shoved them into Wu Yunyi's bowl while praising him, “Looks like Wang Lu really knows you well! She was right; you really love eating fish bones. Come on, have them all!”
Wu Yunyi looked at the mound of fish bones and then at Zheng Zheng’s teasing smile. With remnants of fish stuck between his teeth, he felt a wave of nausea wash over him. He nearly slammed his hand on the table, his face turning pale. “What do you mean, buddy?”
Su Ning pouted, clearly annoyed. “He was just trying to treat you nicely. If you don’t like it, just say so. No need to make such a sour face!”
Zheng Zheng mentally applauded Su Ning, realizing she had a talent for acting. Anyone who was fooled by her exterior would surely end up in a dire situation.
Wu Yunyi held back his anger and shot a death glare at Zheng Zheng before turning to Su Ning with a forced smile. “Fish bones are great, but no matter how many I eat, they won’t fill me up.”
Just then, the waiter brought out several more dishes, clearing away the empty plates. Wu Yunyi swallowed hard, staring at the mountains of empty dishes and managed to stutter, “You two ate all this?”
Su Ning casually replied, “Too much? Not at all! This is all for you.”
Wu Yunyi felt moved but quickly remembered that Su Ning had just said, “Look, this is steamed yellow croaker, this is sea treasure delicacies, this is deep-sea octopus, all signature dishes here! They’re so delicious; we’ve already eaten two or three portions!”
Wu Yunyi’s vision darkened; he nearly collapsed under the table, feeling both fury and despair. The sea treasure delicacies were the restaurant's top dish, priced at 5,888 yuan each. Based on what Su Ning said, they had already consumed nearly 20,000 yuan worth, not including the other items. Damn it, did she think he was some kind of rich fool to be scammed like this?
Su Ning put down her chopsticks, her big eyes sparkling as she smiled sweetly, revealing deep dimples that made one fall into them. “Yunyi, thank you so much today! If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have gotten to eat such delicious famous dishes.”
Wu Yunyi's anger crumbled again in front of the adorable girl. No one could stay mad at such a beauty, so he swallowed his irritation and forced a smile. “No problem! If you want to eat, I’ll bring you next time.”
“Uh-oh!” Just then, Zheng Zheng suddenly let out a loud burp and, patting his belly, awkwardly said, “Excuse me, I need to use the restroom.”
“Go ahead, go ahead!” Wu Yunyi was eager to take Zheng Zheng's spot and quickly urged.
Little did he know that as soon as Zheng Zheng left, Su Ning scooted her chair over, lightly sticking out her tongue, and made a face. “Finally, I can sit alone! I was feeling so stifled earlier.”
Wu Yunyi’s rising hopes were dashed; if he sat next to her now, it would only be embarrassing. He could only grudgingly pick up his chopsticks again. But as he reached for the food, his hand froze in midair. Where were the dishes that had just been served? The table was left in a mess, with plates either empty or filled with sauce, and all that remained was a single bean sprout.
Wu Yunyi was utterly dumbfounded and slammed the table.
Su Ning jumped in surprise at his outburst. Seeing his ashen face, she asked timidly, “Wu Yunyi, what’s wrong?”
