Rick snickers. "Sure, you did. You've been zoning out for the last half hour."
"I'm trying," I mutter. "It's just... never mind."
I blink. "What?"
"The results! They're out."
We rush out of the coffee shop, running all the way to the school. My heart is pounding in my chest, and I can’t decide if it’s from the sprint or the fear. Probably both.
When we get there, a small crowd is already gathered around the notice board. My pulse races as I scan the list. I see Nisha's name first—second place. Then Rick—fifth place.
And then... there's me.
Failed. I failed.
My stomach drops like a stone. I feel like the air’s been sucked out of the room, and I’m standing there, just staring at the board in disbelief.
No way. This can’t be happening. I failed?
I can’t even hear Rick and Nisha anymore. Their voices sound distant, like I’m underwater. My head spins, and for a moment, I feel like I might just pass out right there.
How could this happen?
