CHAPTER 1
______________________________
I woke up to the sound of one of my best friends yelling my name. “Fang! Get your ass up, we’re gonna be late for school!” Her voice was deep for a girl, and I knew if I didn’t get up she’d be up here to beat my ass till I did get up.
“I’m up!” I yelled down to her, throwing my blanket off of me. The cold air made me shiver but I pushed through it and got up, stretching my arms and legs. I turned on my light and let my eyes get used to the burning white light. I walked over to my closet where I grabbed a black band tee shirt, my black ripped jeans, and my dark purple jacket with my pride patch on it. I went to the bathroom to get changed and put all my jewelry on. I took off my angry birds pajama pants and threw them into my clothes basket, as well as the black tank top I had worn to bed.
I pulled my jeans up onto my legs and made sure I zipped up the fly, definitely didn’t want that down for the first day of senior year. I pulled my tee shirt over my head and tucked it into my pants. I grabbed by black leather belt that had metal ringed holes all around it and pulled it through the loops on my pants. I pulled the jacket over my arms and looked at myself in the mirror. My long black hair was a tangled mess I realized, laughing a bit to myself. I still had a little bit of eyeliner on my eyes that I must have missed last night. I decided instead of washing it off like a smart person, I would just fix it up with more eyeliner.
I opened up the top drawer of the sink cabinet and grabbed all my jewelry out. I first put on all the rings I had, which is a lot. They fill up all my fingers, and put the chain necklace under my jacket. I hooked the belt chain onto my belt and went to grab my dangly earrings. My ears were long and pointed on the ends, like elf ears, as I was half elf. I hooked the many chained earrings onto my ears and looked into the mirror for the second time.
My acid green eyes stared right back at me, my slitted pupils looking extra slim today, probably still getting used to the bright lights. My pale skin almost glowed in these bright white lights, I think I should probably get some dimmer lights. Though the lighting did make my green patches of scales look good. I should probably explain why I have patches of scales though. I’m an Elemental, which means I’m supposed to be half human half animal, aka we have animal features and can control an element, but I’ll explain the supposed to be part in a minute. There are two kinds of Elementals, the Majors and the Minors.
The minors can have any element but they can only manipulate existing elements. They cannot create their element out of nothing like the Majors can. With the Majors there is only one per main element. Fire, water, earth, and weather. The other two are Light and Dark but they have always only had one holder so there are no minors of those two elements. Light and Dark have been around since the beginning of time, they are really old. Elementals pass on their elements due to genetics, so if you have one parent who has a fire element and one with a water element you have a 50/50 chance to get either one. Nobody has two elements that are on record. In school, they didn’t teach us this, so I always thought my instant mastery of my element was just me being awesome but I eventually found out it meant something much more.
So back to me, I’m part snake, as well as part elf instead of human. I got the snake from my ‘I don’t like talking about him’ father, he had a fire element meaning I had to have a fire element. My mother was an elf like me. I went to grab my tooth brush to brush my teeth, especially my fangs as they were exposed to air most of the time as they don’t fit very comfortably in my mouth. I was putting the toothpaste on when I heard a soft knock on the door.
“Yeah?” I asked, peeking my head through the door, it was a short blonde haired girl with big light green eyes. She had a pink sweater vest that had what looked like a white button up’s collar poking through the neck hole. She was wearing a light tan skirt that went to her knees and some white stockings with cute little white shoes. “Hey Lola, what’s up?” I asked letting her into my room.
“Not much, just Al’s getting mad, we were supposed to leave five minutes ago.” She said as she twirled her shoulder length pale blonde hair around her finger, her nervous habit. I knew she didn’t like conflict so I quickened my pace.
“I’m almost ready, would you mind checking my bag to see if everythings there?” I asked while brushing my teeth.
“Yeah, and you may want to brush your hair as well, it’s kinda crazy right now.” She laughed while opening my bag to check that all my books were there.
“I know silly.” I mumbled through a mouthful of water. Spitting out all the toothpaste I grabbed my hair brush and ran it through my hair, once it was smoothed out you could really see the slight purple tint that it had.
“You need a hair tie? I have some in my room if you do.” Lola said, grabbing a history book off my desk and shoving it into my bag.
“I have one, don't worry. Oh crap! Did someone feed Mooshi yet?” I asked as the small fluffy gray and white kitten meowed at my feet.
“Alkali did since she knew you weren’t gonna be up in time.” She chuckled, coming over to pet Mooshi on her little head. Lola’s Elemental half was a floppy eared rabbit, and it showed with her floppy bunny ears the color of her pale blonde hair fading to white at the ends. As well as her white cotton ball looking tail.
I scooted around her as to not disturb her morning Mooshi pets and unplugged my phone. I grabbed some socks from a drawer and tugged them on. I pulled my black combat boots on and tied the laces, double knotting them of course, I am not a psychopath. I grabbed my bag and looked down at Lola, “Ok come on let’s go.”
Walking down the stairs to meet the glare of Alkali was a little alarming but after she saw Lola behind me she nicend up. Simp. Alkali was almost seven foot, standing at six foot eleven inches. Her Elemental half was a white-tailed deer, which made her that tall. Compared to Lola she was a giant as Lola was only four foot eleven inches. A whole two foot difference. She had dark gray/black hair all swept to the side, her skin was dark and resembled that of the human’s Native American people. She had pale seafoam green eyes that scare me quite a bit. Her deer half gave her white fawn like freckles all over her body, as well as the ears and tail of course.
“Took you long enough.” Alkali said as she opened the door in an obvious hurry. She hated being late to things, especially school.
“Yeah yeah, I get it.” I said pushing past her out the door and started walking in the direction of our high school. It was about half a mile away and we needed to be in class in less than ten minutes.
“Fang?” Lola caught up to me fairly quickly, which is strange for her short legs. She is very fast and athletic even though she refused to play sports all her freshman through junior years. “Did you get the email from the principal? Or should I say, did you bother to check and read it?” She smiled, pulling her phone out to show me the email.
“I didn’t think to look since you know, today’s the first day?” I questioned skimming over the words thinking nothing of it till one word caught my eye. Elementians. “Wait a sec, the Elementians are coming to our school today? I thought they never left the Capital?” I questioned rereading the email to see if I was mistaken.
“Apparently they are coming during the lunch periods. Email says they are looking for the missing Elementians.” Lola said twirling her hair on her finger, “Do you think we know them? Like have we ever talked to some of the Majors and not even known it?” She said excitedly bouncing on her toes as she walked.
“No idea, they might not even go here.” I said pulling my phone out to check my notifications while we walked. Nothing but youtube uploads that I’d have to watch later tonight.
“True,” Alkali chimed in, “though it would be really cool if we did know them.”
“Well yeah,” I said, “it’s just very unlikely that they go to our small school.”
“Uh guys,” Lola nervously pointed at the school that we finally had caught up to, “why are there so many security guards outside of the school?”
“Guess the Elementians take leaving the Capital really seriously.” I laughed as we walked up to the door, a guard stopping us.
“Names and grade level.” He said his breath reeking of mints, my man’s had way to many of them.
“Lola Evergreen, Fang Woods, and I am Alkali James.” Alkali pointed at each of us as she said our names. “We’re all in grade twelve.”
“You can head in.” The guard said after checking our names off of a clipboard he had in his hands. I pushed the door open and held it open for Lola and Alkali and walked after them towards our lockers. One good thing about this school is you don’t change lockers when changing grades. We’ve had the same lockers for our entire time in high school. They also let us pick where we wanted them, so our lockers are all next to each other.
I walked up to mine and grabbed the envelope that was wedged in the door, I opened it and saw it was my schedule, ugh History of the Elementals first. Boring.
“What did you guys get for your first period?” I asked as I shoved my backpack into my locker.
“I got calculus, which is gonna suck.” Lola pouted, pulling a textbook and notebook out of her locker.
“I have a study hall first.” Alkali smiled, pulling the book she’d been reading out and pushing the rest of the stuff into the locker.
“Lucky.” Me and Lola sighed at the same time.
“Jinx.” I smiled, poking Lola in the shoulder.
“Shut up Dork!” She said, shoving my shoulder before closing her locker.
I stuck my tongue out at her like a little kid and shut my locker. “You guys ready for this?” I asked, pointing down the hall that led to our classes.
“Not really,” Lola sighed, “but we don’t have a choice. At least this is our last year.”
Alkali and I laughed as we walked towards our classrooms.
