After dinner, his parents took his younger brother, Luo Hua, out for a walk, while Luo Feng went to do his tutoring job.
Around six in the evening, it was already getting dark.
"This tutoring job will also be wrapping up soon," Luo Feng thought. He moved swiftly through the alleys like a leopard, agile and fast. Ahead, there was a dead-end alley, but Luo Feng jumped, clearing over two meters, gently placing his left hand on the top of the wall. With a slight push, he vaulted into another alley.
Running fast served as a warm-up before tutoring.
Luo Feng kept his speed at about 15 meters per second, or around 54 kilometers per hour. This wasn’t his top speed, but it was enough to warm up.
"Huff, huff," he breathed. "Only one month left until the college entrance exams, so I’ll put tutoring on hold for now. Over the past six months, tutoring has brought in about 20,000 yuan." Since last year, when he earned the title of "Advanced Trainee," he was able to land this tutoring job, teaching a young boy the basics of movement techniques.
He earned 100 yuan an hour, tutoring five days a week for one hour each evening, earning him about 2,000 yuan a month.
"My dad works all day, making just two or three thousand yuan a month. I earn more in an hour tutoring. This is the difference between an ordinary person and an advanced trainee at the martial arts gym! If I can become a ‘Warrior,’ the difference will be even more astounding." Luo Feng’s gaze focused. Up ahead in the alley, a truck was turning, blocking his path.
But Luo Feng didn’t slow down. He kicked off the ground, leaping two to three meters into the air, stepping twice on the wall, and then landing lightly on the other side to continue his sprint.
Soon—
Luo Feng had reached the entrance of a quiet residential complex.
"This is where my parents deserve to live," Luo Feng thought as he looked at the peaceful residential area. The complex had a low housing density, with ponds, flowerbeds, and trees throughout. Even the high-rise buildings had sky gardens on each floor.
Besides high-rise apartments, there were also row houses and townhouses.
Currently, Huaxia had six base cities, each with a huge population. Jiangnan City alone had nearly two hundred million people, so land was precious. Townhouses and row houses were rare and costly, and independent villas even required a luxury tax.
"I'm here to see unit 1801 in building 18," Luo Feng told the security guard at the gate.
"One moment." The security guard pressed a button on the intercom, and a camera zoomed in on Luo Feng. Soon, the voice of the 1801 resident came through, "It’s Luo. Let him in."
"Understood, sir," said the security guard, letting Luo Feng pass.
...
An hour later, Luo Feng exited the complex.
"Alright, tutoring’s done. Now, time to head to the martial arts gym to see if my strength has improved."
※※※※※※
The Extreme Martial Arts Gym, Earth’s number one martial arts gym, was founded by the world’s strongest fighter, "Hong."
Branches of the gym were located around the world.
“Beep!” Luo Feng scanned his trainee ID at the entrance, entering the gym courtyard.
The gym itself looked like a massive beast lying in wait, occupying an area larger than a high school. The main gate was wide enough to allow ten cars to drive through side by side. Inside the courtyard were three massive, silver-white buildings resembling spaceships.
“Senior!”
“Hello, Senior!”
Along the pathways and lawns were numerous trainees. When they saw the advanced trainee badge on Luo Feng’s chest, each greeted him respectfully.
Inside the gym, the three huge buildings served specific purposes: one for beginner trainees, one for intermediate, and one for advanced trainees.
On the first and second floors of the advanced trainees’ building were large lecture halls, each capable of holding thousands of people. Instructors held classes in these halls, and the gym had around thirty to forty thousand members overall.
The minimum age to become a gym trainee was 16, and training was no longer allowed after age 30 to ensure resources weren’t wasted.
Of all the trainees, only a few hundred were advanced trainees, mostly in their twenties.
At only 18, Luo Feng was exceptionally young.
"Hello, Senior."
Luo Feng made his way to the third floor of the advanced training building, which was only accessible to advanced trainees.
The third floor had a large training hall over a hundred meters long and wide, where a dozen or so advanced trainees were currently gathered.
“Hey, Crazy.”
“Crazy, you’re here!”
As soon as Luo Feng entered, the group warmly greeted him.
“Hey, Brother Wang, Brother Yang, Sister Li,” Luo Feng replied with a smile, feeling a sense of warmth at being around these older trainees. All were older than twenty, making Luo Feng the youngest. There were over a hundred advanced trainees in Yian District’s Extreme Martial Arts Gym, though only a handful would show up to practice unless they lacked resources to train at home.
Wealthier members generally had private training spaces, so those who regularly came here often lived in low-rent apartments.
As for Luo Feng, he’d earned his "Crazy" nickname after furiously defeating three wealthier advanced trainees one after another.
"Let’s see how much my strength has improved these last couple of weeks," Luo Feng thought as he walked toward the "Strength Testing Machine" in the corner of the training hall. Two of these machines were lined up there; both the intermediate and advanced exams, as well as the warrior exam, required strength testing.
“Inhale, exhale!”
Luo Feng took a deep breath, letting his body relax. Suddenly, he focused his gaze, his spine like a bowstring drawn taut. From his feet to his hips, the force traveled up his spine, propelling his right fist like a cannonball—
“Boom!” His fist landed on the strength testing pad, shaking it violently.
The screen displayed: "809 kg."
“Not bad, Crazy! Over the 800-kilo mark!” A tall, wiry man with a scar across his face clapped and shouted.
“Brother Yang,” Luo Feng grinned. “But I’m still far behind you. Could you help turn on the speed tester?” Brother Yang, or Yang Wu, was one of the top three advanced trainees in the gym but lacked a bit in speed, which kept him from passing the "Quasi-Warrior" exam.
To become a true warrior, advanced trainees must pass two tests:
The first is the physical fitness test, or the “Quasi-Warrior” test. Passing this means one has reached warrior standards in physical fitness and is now a “Quasi-Warrior.”
The second test is the actual combat test against beasts; only by passing this can one earn the warrior title.
"Testing your speed? Sure thing.” Yang Wu moved to the track, activating the speed testing device.
Click!
The camera lights turned on.
“Huff, huff.” Luo Feng adjusted his breathing, preparing himself at the starting line. The track was 60 meters, and the speed test would occur in the final stretch.
With a burst of energy, Luo Feng sprinted forward.
Whoosh!
In a flash, he accelerated to top speed, powerful strides propelling him down the track. He sped through the test zone in a gust of wind, slowing to a stop soon after.
"What’s my time?” Luo Feng asked with a smile.
“Wow, Crazy, you’ve improved since last time! Impressive,” Yang Wu marveled, pointing to the display. "Come take a look."
Luo Feng walked over, seeing the screen display: “23.8 m/s.”
"Not bad."
Luo Feng wasn’t overly pleased. The physical fitness test for Quasi-Warrior status had three parts: strength, speed, and reflexes. He had a natural talent for reflexes, barely reaching warrior standards there.
But—
For strength, the Quasi-Warrior threshold was 900 kg!
For speed, the threshold was 25 meters per second, or a 4-second 100 meters.
