A week passed and everything went back to normal. Well, as normal as it could be now that Bethany and I are a couple. Rosie seemingly went back acting like nothing happened, except when Bethany would arrive and her whole vibe would change. Not that anybody else noticed. Or maybe it was all just in my mind.
If Ian thought me and Bethany getting together would improve his chances with Rosie, he was greatly mistaken. Now, instead of a non-committal answer, Rosie told Ian pointblank she would never get together with him. Which pleased me immensely.
That didn’t stop Ian from crashing in with the gang. Though this time, instead of being cloyingly sweet at Rosie, he’s now annoyingly being sarcastic at everything Rosie says or do. And Rosie is the same with him. It was infuriating being around the two. They were like two divorced couples arguing about old disagreements.
At one point, during an especially heated exchange, Rosie turned to us and asked, “What do you guys think? Should I give Ian another chance at courting me?”
Before Bethany and I could even give an answer, she turned back to Ian and said, “Here,” as she tossed him a coin. “Why don’t we decide the answer with a coin toss?” she said, as she turned her back on Ian and looked at me, with that look of accusation like I killed her pet or something.
(In hindsight, this should have told me she found out what happened, but fuck me, I was a fucking oblivious cunt back then).
“Are you serious?” Ian asked.
“Yes,” Rosie answered, still looking at me.
“If you say so,” Ian shrugged and tossed the coin upwards, calling heads as he did so.
I almost tackled Ian right then and there. Only Rosie’s fleeting smile stopped me. It was gone before I could double check if it was ever there. The moment passed and Ian was calling the toss tails.
Rosie smiled before turning to Ian and picking the coin from his outstretched hands.
“See? Even fate wouldn’t let me be with you,” she said to Ian with as much condescension as I’ve ever heard her talk to anybody.
She walked past us and pulled Bethany with her. Bethany pulled me along with her. I looked back at Ian standing alone, with a rage in his eyes I knew I would have to contend with later on.
