It started to rain lightly as soon as we drove off. Rosie shut off the radio and sat back silently, determined not to talk to me. I was fine with that, but the silence was bugging me so I switched the radio on again. She switched it off. I switched it on. She switched it off.
“You know what? Fine, you win.” I said, as I kept on driving.
“What do you mean I win?” she asked. I could hear the annoyance in her voice. I sighed. “What do you mean I win?” she asked again, punching my shoulder. “Am I such a charity case that you have to let me win, huh?” She prodded me, punching my shoulders again.
“Rosie…” I said, trying to appease her while trying to block her punches with my other hand. She continued punching. It was starting to hurt.
“Rosie, please…” as I caught her punch with my fingers that sent my fingers twisting back painfully. “Ow! Fuck!” I exclaimed as I slammed on the brakes and pulled the car to the side of the road. “Fuck you Rosie,” I said to her angrily as I massaged my fingers on my lap. It seemed to have shook her as she gave me a soft “sorry.”
I started the car and drove on, massaging my fingers while waiting for my anger to cool off. She sat there not looking at me. After a few minutes of silence, she leaned forward and switched the radio on.
“Oh fuck this girl!” I screamed inside my head.
“Really Emma? Really?” I said to her in disbelief.
She started laughing. Before long, I was laughing too. Oh fuck us. We’re truly fucked aren’t we? I thought.
When our laughter died, she spoke up.
“That’s the first time in a long while you used my real name,” she said softly.
Oh. She noticed.
“I’ve missed it,” she whispered.
I had nothing to say. I drove on.
“Dex, would you stop the car?”
“Why?” I asked.
“Just stop it please. I want to tell you something.”
But I didn’t wanna pull over by the side of the road. The rain was now pouring hard and visibility was piss poor as the rain and dark combined. I didn’t wanna end up being rear-ended by a driver who couldn’t see us by the side of the road. “Whatever it is, you can tell it to me while I’m driving,” I told her.
For a while, it seemed she was going to tell me whatever was on her mind, but then she hesitated and just pulled in on herself. “Never mind,” she said.
“Argh!” I screamed mentally. Okay, fuck being rear-ended, let’s hear this, I said to myself, as I pulled over by the side of the road. “Okay, what is it?” I turned to her.
“Nothing,” she mumbled.
Unbelievable. Un-fucking-believable!
“Rosie,” I gritted my teeth, “If you’re not going to tell me, be prepared to hold in whatever that is forever.” I waited. She was thinking it over. When it seemed she wasn’t going to talk, I moved to start the car. She spoke up.
“You know that movie “My Best Friend’s Wedding?” she began.
“Yeah?”
“Well…” she squirmed. I waited. With baited breath I waited. For thirty seconds. Sixty. Eighty. “You know what? Never mind,” she finally said.
I started the car and drove off. She sat silently as I drove. I kept my frustration in while I drove.
“It’s just that..” she began. I went ballistic. “I am not stopping the car again Rosie!”
“Okay,”she said timidly.
Fuck. But I was too mad at her to let her get away with her indecisiveness. I kept on driving.
When we arrived at her house, she got off without a word and slammed the door before hurrying off inside her house, with nary a look back at me. I was still mad at her so I drove off without waiting to see if she would call me back.
