Bobby Braw The Digital Swindle

The Programmer

Miyrov Street was a small, peaceful suburb in Fluvaria. It was fifteen minutes away from the main city and was home to many people. One of them being Zach Gillroy. Unbeknown to him, he was going to have some visitors today. Narvy and Elsa had just arrived on the street. They walked around, trying to find Zach’s house. “Do you remember the address?” asked Elsa. “Yes, it’s 52 Miyrov Street,” replied Narvy. The two of them had big plans for their visit. They wanted to investigate Zach and gather information on him. They would have already done this three days ago, had their individual plans not clashed.

After wandering around for seven minutes, Narvy and Elsa found 52 Miyrov Street. It was a small, grey wooden house, with some kind of extension that was most likely a garage. Unlike other houses in the area, there wasn’t any kind of garden surrounding it. Narvy and Elsa walked up the driveway and knocked on the door. Within five seconds, Zach Gillroy opened the door. He looked exactly like he did in the photo, minus the headset. “Hello, can I help you?” asked Zach. “Hi. We came here to talk to you,” stated Narvy. “About what?” asked Zach. “It’s quite a lengthy subject, we’ll tell you once we’re inside,” explained Narvy. “Alright, come on in,” replied Zach.

They followed Zach to the living room. It contained some modern black couches and some souvenirs that were related to gaming and computer science. Zach turned to Elsa and Narvy. “Do you two want anything to drink?” he asked. “No thanks,” replied Elsa. “Same here,” replied Narvy. “Okay. I’ll quickly make myself some coffee, then we can sit down and talk,” replied Zach. A minute later, Zach returned to the living room with a hot cup of coffee. “So, what do you want to talk about?” asked Zach. “It’s about the Ball of Honour,” explained Narvy. “Remember the fire?” he asked. “Yeah, I do,” replied Zach. “It was faked. Some hacker stole files from a computer and set off the fire alarm as a distraction,” explained Narvy. “Why are you telling me all this?” asked Zach. “Because we don’t know who’s behind it. This same hacker has also committed similar crimes, and we want to put an end to it,” explained Elsa. Just then a thought occurred to Zach. “Wait a minute. Aren’t you part of that group who stopped a sorcerer and his army from destroying the city?” he asked. “Yes, we are. We’re called the Braw Agents,” replied Elsa. “Can we ask you some questions?” asked Narvy. “Sure, go ahead,” replied Zach.

“Okay. Where were you when the fire alarm sounded?” asked Narvy. “I was in the bathroom when I heard the alarm go off,” answered Zach. “I tried to get to the elevator, but it was full, so I had to take the stairs if I wanted to leave the building,” he added. “Trust me, you’re lucky you didn’t take the elevator,” commented Narvy. “Why do you say that?” asked Zach. “It broke down and we were trapped in it for at least an hour,” explained Narvy. “That must have been unpleasant,” commented Zach. “It was,” said Narvy. “Next question; were you on the fourth floor before the fire alarm went off?” asked Elsa. “No, I was having fun on the fifth floor, and the bathroom I went to was also on the fifth floor,” explained Zach. “Good to know,” replied Elsa. “And for the last question, why were you invited to the Ball of Honour?” she asked. “I was invited to the ball because I was involved with the creation of Splitz,” answered Zach. “I was one of the programmers of that game,” he added.

Splitz is a video game that can be played on a console or computer. It involves the player racing around various flashy courses in a vehicle. There are many different vehicles the player can choose from, all of which have a function; that being the ability to split your vehicle and race around the course as two entities. When both halves are in the same spot, the player can reconnect them at any time. That is if neither half fell off the racetrack or got destroyed.

“Why did you ask me those questions?” asked Zach. Narvy knew how to answer this question, but he hesitated for fear of sounding rude. Eventually, he plucked up the courage to answer Zach. “It’s because we thought you could be a potential suspect for the hacker’s identity,” answered Narvy. “Why? What did I do?” asked Zach. “It’s just that hackers are skilled with handling computers, and you’re a programmer, so we thought it would be a good idea to look into you,” explained Narvy. “Really? You think I’m a cyber threat, just because I’m good with computers?” replied Zach. “Well, we’ve already looked at some other people, and we’re just trying to find out who the hacker is,” explained Narvy. “Let me tell you something. I’m not the hacker. Come to my room if you want proof,” said Zach.

Zach left the living room and went to his bedroom. Narvy and Elsa followed him. The room had a bed and a shelf of video games. But those things were overshadowed by the computer setup. There was a fancy gaming chair and a keyboard that glowed with multiple neon colours. Zach sat in the lavish chair and started up his computer. Once everything was done loading, he asked Narvy and Elsa to look at his screen. “This is my home page, and these are all of my folders,” stated Zach. He then proceeded to click on them one by one, and briefly show what was inside. Inspecting each file he showed them, Narvy and Elsa didn’t notice anything suspicious. All they saw were a bunch of test projects and files for Splitz. “See, none of these files contain personal information, nor were any of them stolen,” explained Zach.

“Thanks for the evidence. We’re sorry if this meeting was awkward for you,” replied Narvy. “It’s fine, you didn’t do anything too bad,” replied Zach. “Should we leave now?” asked Elsa. “You guys are alright, so you can stay here for a little bit longer, but please leave at some stage. I don’t want you guys to make yourselves too at home here,” answered Zach, grinning. Narvy and Elsa were initially going to leave directly after questioning Zach. But thanks to his offer, they decided to stay a little longer.

“I heard that you won some awards,” stated Narvy. “What were they for?” he asked. “They were for the games I contributed to,” answered Zach. “My most recent one was for Splitz,” he added. “When you were my age, did you go to The Engineering Club?” asked Narvy. “No, why?” asked Zach. “I was just asking because I go there all the time,” answered Narvy. “Are you an engineer?” asked Zach. “I’d say I’m an aspiring engineer,” explained Narvy. “That’s really cool,” replied Zach. “Thanks. You probably would have loved The Engineering Club, they have robotics and all kinds of cool stuff there,” explained Narvy. “Sounds interesting. I wish I’d known about it years ago,” commented Zach.

Narvy soon lost track of the time talking about technology and engineering with Zach. Realising they’d been there longer than they had planned, he decided it was time to leave. “We should be leaving now. Thank you for answering all our questions and showing us your files,” he said. “That’s okay. I’m pleased I could help,” replied Zach. Narvy and Elsa left Zach’s room and made their way out of the house. Meanwhile, Zach stayed in his room and decided now would be a good time to play a computer game. He looked through his collection, hoping to find something good. Eventually, he chose Splitz and loaded it up. Zach only planned on playing it for a short amount of time, but he knew the game was addictive enough for him to play it longer.

Upon leaving the house, Narvy and Elsa walked down Zach’s driveway and made their way out of Miyrov Street. The further they walked from Zach’s house, the more plant life there was. “It’s good we got that out of the way,” stated Elsa. “Yeah, our mission is getting easier with each person proven innocent,” replied Narvy. “Now that we’ve investigated all three of our suspects, what do we do now?” asked Elsa. “We’ll go back and find some new suspects,” answered Narvy. “We’ll just keep investigating people until we find the culprit,” he added. “When should we start theorising about suspects again?” asked Elsa. “I don’t know. I’ll see what the others want to do,” explained Narvy. “When do you think I should host it?” he asked. “For me, it depends. If Julia’s taking me out again, I’d like the meeting to happen later down the line, but if not, you can host it tomorrow as far as I’m concerned,” explained Elsa. “Okay, I’ll take all of that into consideration,” replied Narvy.

After their conversation ended, Narvy and Elsa left Miyrov Street in different directions. They both planned on spending the rest of the day doing their own thing. Narvy was glad he could finally tick another person off the list of suspects. He didn’t know who to aim for next, but he was confident he would find the hacker's identity very soon.
