Donny darted a look
of uneasiness while leaving as the bell rang for the dispersal of
students. He was with Fredrick, who was kind of like him, a little
smarter or maybe comical. But that humor of ninja maybe didn't appeal
to Ms. Andria Gonzales much.
They both didn't want to 'get along' with me anyway. My mind was riding at different possibilities, so I was getting a bit unsure about stuff happening right in front of me.
How could Donny be just so insecure suddenly? It can't be. The spider thing? Was Donny referencing my life parallel to the James and the Giant Peach story? It can't be. Just a coincidence of names. He's just a bully. I focused my thoughts on something else.
After school, there would be friends on the ground to play. I needed to rush home. I ran down the stairs through a crowd of people and almost knocked my foot on a high edge rebalancing myself back in the air.
I
wish getting away from math was as easy as going from one street to another headache scary teachers. No, Ms.Linda. That evil laugh
echoed in my ears.
I hope she doesn't come into my dreams. Cursing math is what Ms.Linda does not like, it makes her look like a nasty monster. Nasty.
Imagine she's all poker face. Suddenly the chubby blonde wearing specks not even of her size, starts changing expressions.
Any kid will know about it when she twitches her one eye and narrows it toward a small innocent kid like me. Like me. Then her body grows unusually bigger to defy. Maybe in others' dreams not mine.
Her skin. Her skin. It changes to brown fur like brown tentacles. Their teeth turned like a sharp razor, making her qualities resemble a bear and a werewolf. The boy sweated heavily and quivered his lips as he didn't seem to understand Algebra and made fun of maths.
She laughs like an evil menace and as I said she's none less than a rotten green. Smelly poisonous drink. In an instant, some kids turn to copy the answers instead, to not face her craziness.
But I wish math was ending, just like the way towards my casa, I mean towards my home. That's the word we use in our language. I didn't live in Spain much. We are in America. Since my dad shifted his job. But after him, nothing changed. I don't know where he is now. Lost.
I kept running. The three-storied white house I lived in was surrounded by not-so-ugly broken dead branches and dark bushes, as Della our landlord used to say. Her laziness was disguised by the fake representation of hope. Like seriously. Give them damn water!.
Sometimes it is true, the grass is greener on the other side and so is my mom's little garden out near the verandah. Pink flowers were blossoming leaving a scent of light-hearted sweet Snacky food. But overall the area was dull. We need to do something about it.
A paper crackled under my shoes. It was a paper plane. A tickle passed up from the stomach. I picked it up.
The door slammed open and I rushed the plane inside.
'Swoosh! Passengers alert, here I come!'.
I hurried, flying the plane through my little hands. My foot tapped faster every minute.
"Oh, darling… don't run so fast". Her voice had a rich melody of smoothness. Her shoulder-length haircut was better than that of Della's, giving a shiny brown reflection makeup, just a strong glow from her smile was enough. I dashed to the dinner table where she started serving the plates for the three of us.
I started taking rounds of the table. "Swoosh!. Mom! Sit inside, we are gonna take off soon!".
"Oh James", she frowned and smiled as she knew that his happiness knew no bounds. She sat on her knees. " What is it?" Asked Meck.
"My dreams! They're gonna fly so high!"
Della turned and started closing her ears.
"What are you doing? Just sit young chap!" He turned. Della glared at me.
Seems like I still watch too much of cartoons. But I cannot stop comparing Della the witch to Mr. Bean's landlady. At least she isn't as scary as Ms. Linda.
Meck glanced at Della and sighed.
"Jamie! Wait for me. I've missed the flight". She gently caught my arms and tickled me. My laugh was not controllable this time.
"Now let's have dinner, enough games for right now, okay?"
Finally, we sat in the dining area. The table was quite round, good, and small. After all, we lived on rent so we didn't need to spend on every furniture. Most things were Della's property. She was calmly eating right now. Like a bull digging its head into the food pot.One moment calm and then angry. I guess she's suppressing her anger I don't know. But she was into the lasagna made today.
I just glared at the food. But sometimes my anxiety comes up making a continuous tap on the floor. I know Meck could feel that. Maybe it was just the school's thoughts. After we finished our dinner, Mom spoke first.
'So…tomorrow's a special day!'She smiled as if she would come and hug me.
'Oh! Don't tell me it's about that! Meck' Della growled.
I glanced at her in surprise.
"Is it about dad? I sprang up. Is he coming back?
'No, sorry about this Jamie, but he's busy'.
Della's mouth hung open as if she heard something different.
"Oh, come on! Meck, don't you think–
Meck instantly cut Della's words and proceeded.
I sat disappointed. Are they hiding something from me about Dad? I need to know.
'Don't be sad darling, we're going to the circus tomorrow! and it's gonna be a really good day!'.
Meck seemed to play with her last bite through the fork." and you know tomorrow who's coming as a special guest?
'What!, who?' I didn't stand this time, and Della was relieved for a moment.
'Meck came a little forward, Tom Hanks!'
I sprang up,' What! Tom Hanks, the illusionist!? Let's go tomorrow!" I'm all in!'
The chair skidded back and fell backwards making a loud thud on the ground. I closed my eyes.
'You young chap can't you just sit!' Della yelled.
"Della, it's okay, it happens, weren't you a kid like him?
'Of course not! Much disciplined'.She got up and went away into her room.
Before that, she looked like smashing me to pieces for the next dinner. I didn't utter the next words until she was gone. I don't know sometimes my excitement knows no boundaries and that is what leads me to be troublesome.
'Is it him, who we last saw on the NYC channel performing magic!'I asked.
'Yes!, now finish the rest of your meal!' she ordered.
'It's time for the pilot to play games with his friends, I must land at the ground station'.
