Warped horizon

Episode 2

Episode 2

Dec 04, 2024

A surge of energy erupted in his chest, raw and uncontainable. His eyes flared with an eerie blue light as his trembling hands found strength. Ren growled through gritted teeth.

A sudden wave of force exploded outward, blasting the demon off him. The creature hurtled through the air, crashing into the street with a deafening roar.

The camera shifts to Ren, his eyes glowing an eerie, unnatural blue. He gasps for breath, his chest heaving, his heart pounding like a war drum. He doesn’t understand what just happened—how he unleashed that power—but there’s no time to dwell on it. The heavy, charged air tells him the fight isn’t over.

A guttural growl echoes through the space. Ren doesn’t see the demon, but he feels it—a sinister, suffocating presence rising from the shadows. The demon drags itself to its feet, blood dripping from its jagged maw. Its voice rasps, venomous and strained, “How... did... you... do that?” The effort of speaking seems to tear at its battered form.

Ren’s body tenses as the demon begins to advance. A monstrous fusion of nightmare and rage, it moves with a staggering limp, but its intent is clear. Ren’s breath catches as the demon’s pace quickens. Then, with terrifying speed, it lunges toward him, claws outstretched.

Instinct takes over. Ren barely evades the attack, leaping sideways. His body feels lighter, faster, stronger—but the shock of moving so quickly leaves him off-balance. He stumbles, landing hard but upright. The demon spins, its glowing eyes narrowing, and charges again.

This time, Ren sees it coming. He ducks under a sweeping claw, feeling the wind from the strike rush past his face. His movements are sharper now, his senses heightened. He can predict the demon’s next attack before it even comes. It lashes out with its other arm, and Ren vaults backward, narrowly avoiding being slashed.

The demon growls in frustration. “You... shouldn’t... be able to dodge me,” it snarls, blood bubbling at its lips.

Ren doesn’t respond. His heart is racing, his head pounding. The overwhelming sensory input crashes over him again—he can feel everything: the faint vibrations in the walls, the rustling of debris underfoot, even the tiny insect crawling on the ground nearby. It’s too much. His head feels like it’s splitting open.

The demon roars and charges, this time lowering itself like a predator ready to pounce. It moves with deceptive agility, closing the distance in an instant. Ren barely dodges to the side, his shoulder brushing against the demon’s claws. He rolls to his feet just as the demon attacks again, this time swiping both arms in a deadly arc.

Ren ducks, pivots, and springs backward, his movements faster and more fluid with each dodge. But the demon doesn’t relent. It feints a strike to the left and slashes at Ren from the right, forcing him to twist at an awkward angle to evade.

Sweat drips down Ren’s face. His body feels like it’s running on instinct, but his mind is a whirlwind of panic and pain. Each dodge pushes his limits further, the strain of his newfound abilities and the sensory overload threatening to overwhelm him.

The demon halts, snarling in frustration. “You... can’t... keep this up forever,” it sneers, baring its bloodied fangs.

Ren stumbles back, his legs trembling. He knows the demon is right. He can’t keep dodging—it’s only a matter of time before he slips. His mind flashes back to the sensation of power he unleashed earlier. If he could just do it again...

The demon charges, its claws tearing into the ground as it propels itself forward with explosive speed. Ren feels its approach in the air around him, every step reverberating through his hyper-attuned senses. He jumps high into the air, barely clearing the beast’s snapping jaws. He lands awkwardly but recovers just in time to avoid another slash aimed at his chest.

The attacks are relentless. The demon swings, lunges, and pounces, but Ren’s sharpened reflexes keep him one step ahead. Even as exhaustion takes hold, his body moves with precision, dodging every attempt to land a killing blow.

Finally, the demon roars in frustration, its rage blinding. It lunges one last time, claws extended, aiming for Ren’s throat. But this time, Ren doesn’t dodge. Instead, he raises a trembling hand toward the demon, his glowing blue eyes narrowing with determination.

The moment the demon’s claws graze his skin, the air around them changes. Ren’s ability activates.

A crushing wave of gravitational force explodes outward from him, distorting the space around them. The demon is hurled backward with unimaginable power, slamming into a nearby building. The impact reduces the structure to rubble, crushing the demon beneath the debris. The sheer force of the attack leaves the air heavy, the ground trembling in its wake.

Ren collapses to his knees, gasping for air. His chest heaves, his head pounding like a drum. The sensory overload is unbearable, every sound and movement around him amplified to a maddening degree.

From the rubble, the demon lets out a weak, gurgling laugh. “You think... this is over?” it rasps, its voice barely audible. “You’ve only... scratched the surface... of what you’re capable of.”

Ren’s glowing eyes dim as he looks up, his expression weary but resolute. “I didn’t want this,” he whispers, his voice trembling. “But if you come after me again... I won’t hesitate.”

The demon’s grin falters, its body finally giving out as silence falls over the battlefield.

Ren slumps forward, clutching his head as the dust settles around him. He may have won, but the cost of his newfound power is clear. This is only the beginning.

Ren lies on the ground, his body trembling, his head pounding. The world around him feels distant, muffled by the pain coursing through him. Blood drips from a gash on his forehead, pooling beneath him. For a moment, he lets his head rest on the shattered concrete, trying to steady his ragged breathing. His mind is reeling, the overwhelming sensations from earlier finally beginning to subside.

He forces himself to sit up, pain stabbing through his ribs. That’s when he senses it—six presences approaching fast, each radiating a malicious intent. Panic surges through him. He pushes himself up with what little strength he has left, turning just in time to see them—four human criminals wielding weapons, accompanied by two towering demons.

The criminals laugh mockingly as they close in, their faces twisted with cruel glee. “You think you’re some kind of hero?” one sneers, a jagged blade glinting in his hand.

Before Ren can respond, they charge. He leaps forward, narrowly avoiding the strike of a massive demon claw that slashes through the ground where he had just been lying. The impact cracks the pavement, sending shards of concrete flying. Ren tumbles forward, landing unsteadily on his feet. His legs threaten to give out beneath him, but he forces himself to stay upright.

The first criminal lunges, swinging a metal pipe. Ren ducks, the pipe whooshing past his head. He pivots, barely dodging the punch of another attacker, but his reflexes are slowing. A demon seizes the opportunity, slamming a massive fist into Ren’s side. The force sends him flying backward, crashing through the wall of a nearby building.

Ren groans, slumping against the crumbling structure. His vision blurs as dust and debris rain down around him. He presses a hand to his bleeding temple, trying to focus. “This is it,” he mutters, his voice barely audible. “I’m done.”

Through the haze of pain, he watches as the criminals and demons advance, their power evident in the devastation they’ve left behind. Buildings around them are torn apart—windows shattered, walls caved in, streets littered with debris. Ren can tell by their destructive power that they’re A-rank, a rank he’s only just brushed against. He feels the weight of their strength bearing down on him, suffocating.

One of the demons charges, its claws outstretched, aiming for Ren’s chest. Ren closes his eyes, bracing for the end.
