"So..." I take another bite of the delicious chewy cherry jam cookie, swallowing before continuing to speak. "Where's your wife?"
He freezes, apparently not knowing how to respond to my question. The 'father' takes a deep breath before speaking. "I've been divorced since Kaylee was young."
"Oh. I'm sorry for asking then..." I reply, suddenly apologetic, feeling bad for bringing this up.
"No, no... it's okay, you didn't know. I guess I just thought Kaylee would have told you before inviting you over." He shakes his head.
"Well... I wouldn't know. I just came back from the hospital with a concussion." I lie, I want, no needed him to let me stay here. There was no way I was going to let myself get dragged away by Social Services. Nope, not going to tell him that I ran away from the hospital. This should be enough information to not arouse his suspicions... right?
"Oh..." He gives me a shocked expression, but he eventually speaks again, more slowly and calmly this time around. "So why are you at my house then...?"
"Because all I can remember are too fuzzy memories of your address and your daughter."
"Do you know where you live?"
I shake my head sadly. "After I speak with your daughter, I hope it would be alright if I stayed here for a while."
"If it's alright with my daughter," He nods, before continuing. "Are you sure that it is okay for you to be here right now? Shouldn't you be in the hospital recovering?"
"The doctor said that I should stay somewhere safe until I regain the memories of my family. I didn't have any severe injures."
"Oh, and do you have a place in mind, Aurora?" He asks.
I pause for a second trying to find the best way to format my words. "Here... this is the only house I can remember... and I know your daughter... but I can't remember what we did together or anything..."
He seems a bit surprised, but as he sits in thought, his expression slowly changing to understanding.
