The food almost got stuck in my throat at the question asked.
"Light Rods." I reply, trying to look at her face, but I have trouble overcoming my shyness.
"Hmm." She puts her hand on her chin as she arches her eyebrow, which moves the blindfold she holds.
What could she be thinking??
It can't be; my family has some connection to the Supreme Mage's past?!
I really want to ask, but I don't know if it's a personal question that would make her uncomfortable...
"Interesting." What does she mean by that!?
"Is there a problem?" I think that's a neutral question. I could have chosen to say something different to force her to say it, but I don't want to come across as rude as William. It was a good move, in my opinion.
"I've never heard that last name before." Apparently, my theory was wrong. "The world is full of surprises." She comes over and sits on the edge of my carpet, her legs crossed.
Gosh, I must really be lucky to talk to her.
Zoe supports her face as her torso leans forward. "I've been thinking about something since I got here." Okay, it's my turn to answer! I have to be assertive and think about what I'm going to say. "I don't know if you can remember—I found you and this boy next to you; you were both passed out from lack of mana." She'll probably ask who this boy next to me is!
"He's my older brother, William." I reply with a smile on my face.
She raises her eyebrow slightly as she leaves the lip of her mouth slightly open.
"I figured." What, wasn't that the question?!
Damn, I was hasty; she must have thought I was an idiot...
No problem; I can still reverse the scenario.
"I thought you couldn't see with the blindfold on." A personal question might tell me something about her. It's a risky move, but it's worth it. From her personality, I can tell she's a cheerful, good-natured girl, so theoretically she shouldn't mind questions like that.
"People usually tell me that when I look at them." She scratches her head in a casual manner.
It was a very superficial question! I should have anticipated that people would have that doubt. I was hasty; I didn't consider her fame...
"So, you're not blind?" A rhetorical question, I have to play it safe to ensure the continuity and dynamics of the conversation.
"It's complicated to explain; even I can't say for sure what I see," she answers. "I can see the density of mana in anybody or object, so it's as if I were observing, but only with my eyes closed." So, it's like a high-resolution thermodynamic vision. "I use the blindfold, so I don't lose focus, and if I open my eyes, I don't lose concentration." It's a great mana training.
I can do that with my Mana Radar. Of course, my mana detection is worse than hers; if I close my eyes right now and go by mana alone, I would probably only be able to identify people.
Since mana is everywhere, it's hard to know what's in front of you with your eyes closed. As I trained my radar, I noticed that my detection became sharper. It's as if my mind had adapted to be able to sense different amounts of mana.
Still, it is difficult to quantify mana. Living beings, especially intelligent races, have a quantity of mana that makes my detection unable to tell exactly who has more mana.
If I close my eyes right now, for example, Zoe and I have the same amount of mana in our bodies. Obviously, the amount of mana she has is definitely greater than mine, but it seems like my senses aren't sharp enough to tell how far apart we are in power level.
Wait, that's something we have in common!
I can use this to gain more talk time!
Ugh, my head hurts from so many things I'm thinking at once...
"Are you okay?" She asks me, tilting her head. "You've had that look for a few seconds now..." I made a mistake; I forgot to say something!
It's all lost; she must think I'm weird now...
"I can tell you're a little anxious. I don't need my eyes to see." She says in a laughing voice. "Don't worry, I'm not going to interrogate you or anything." My throat is dry.
Maybe I was overthinking it. Tsk, life is not a game where I can earn friendship points. I just need to be who I am!
"Sorry, I'm a little nervous talking to someone so famous." I say after letting out a short sigh. "I have so many questions I don't even know where to begin..."
"Relax, one thing at a time." She replies, waving her hands. "I'll stay until tomorrow morning, then you can ask lots of questions." Initially, I thought she would just stay for today and go back to her house or something.
"It makes me less anxious..." I tell her.
"However, I don't think I'll have time to answer all your questions." What?
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, I have some questions for you." Again, I swallow hard.
