"Madam?" Akari repeated, a concerned look on her face as she spoke and watched the saintess. This broke Meredith from her stupor, looking back at the wolf beastman before her. As she did however, a sudden headache caused her to flinch, as the memories of the past 15 years of her life as the saintess flooded into her mind.
Clutching her head at this, she slightly stumbled back onto the bed, this caused Akari to place the tray down on the mantlepiece as she approached Meredith a concerned look still on her face. "Madam, is everything alright?" She then asked again as she looked her over, placing a soft hand on Meredith's shoulder as she did so.
"Y-yeah, I'm fine..." Meredith finally said, speaking up as she steadied herself on the bed, a light blush on her face as she glanced back at the mirror on the mantle, before smiling a bit as she stretched. "Sorry about that, I wasn't quite awake, yet." She then continued, as she moved patting Akari on the head a bit, causing the wolf woman's ears to twitch slightly as she backed off a bit from her.
"M-madam, I've often told you not to treat me like a pet dog." Akari then said, frowning a bit as she backed off a bit more, her hand going to one of her wolven ears and rubbing it as she did so, a soft blush on her face. Despite her words, however, Meredith had noticed that the Akari's tail was slightly wagging.
Letting out a soft giggle as she slowly nodded, Meredith sighed heavily before glancing up at Akari with a smile. "Given the sun's height, I'm sure the Head Priest is angry at me again." She would then state, finally glancing out of the large window in her room, the sun visibly high in the sky. A soft chuckle escaped her after she spoke, glancing back at Akari as she did so.
"As you should know, Madam," Akari began, frowning as she spoke. "The Head Priest would like to discuss with you, the plan for your admission into the Ravenwood Academy," Akari stated, her tone nearly monotonous, as if reading off of a script. This caused Meredith to chuckle a bit lightly. "As you are aware..." Akari stated, glaring slightly at Meredith as she continued to speak. "Each generation's Saintess, ever since the first 400 years ago, has gone to Ravenwood, for training. This is so that you, as the Saintess, can learn to control the magicks that Lux Æterna gifts her Saints and followers." Akari continued, ignoring the bored look on Meredith's face. "And, so that you can form bonds to help you in whatever fate or destiny the gods have planned for this generation."
Upon hearing this, Meredith's eye twitched slightly, as the words that Akari had just uttered bounced inside the young Saintess' head. Because of the memories from her past life, she knew that The Saintess of this generation, that is herself, was destined to die shortly after her 20th birthday, five years from now. While she knew that each of the elements had a god tied to them, only three of them had been discussed during the events of Grimoire. That of Lux Æterna; The Goddess of Light. Noctis Interminabilis, The God of Darkness, and Rime Hoarfrost, the Goddess of Water.
"...and, because of this, as you know was discussed with you prior, I will be sent alongside you next year to ensure that you are both safe and not causing any more trouble than necessary," Akari stated seemingly having continued her speech, regardless on if Meredith was listening, or not.
"Huh? Isn't Rime at Ravenwood, right now...?" Meredith spoke out loud her thoughts, not realizing that she had spoken until she noticed that Akari had stopped speaking, her face flushed with embarrassment. This caused Meredith to smirk rather playfully, a smug smile forming on her face rather quickly as Akari stammered.
"W-what does L-lady Hoarfrost's whereabouts have to do with our conversation?" Akari stammered, her face still flush with embarrassment, her wolven ears stiff and flattened back. This caused Meredith to smirk even more, due to understanding Akari's reaction.
One of the features of Grimoire was a relationship system for the Units. This system, which was mainly used to recruit companions during the tutorial, most of the Units could also be romanced with this system. However, there was a select few Units that could not be romanced no matter what. Both Akari and Rime Hoarfrost were two such units, due to their pre-established relationship.
"Are you really sure that it was the High Priest who requested you to be my guard, Akari?" Meredith said, in a rather playfully teasing tone. "Or, did you volunteer, as an excuse to go see Rime? Aren't the two of you en..." Meredith began to say, continuing her teasing, before Akari pounced on her, covering Meredith's mouth with both of her hands.
"Sh-shut up!" Akari said, her face even redder now, her usual demeanor shattered due to Meredith's teasing. To this date, according to Meredith's memories, there were only two people who could break Akari's usual stoic demeanor. Meredith herself, due to her constant playfulness. And Rime Hoarfrost, who Akari was, at the time, currently engaged with due to events that caused Akari to quit being an S-class Adventurer, and join Lux Æterna's temple to raise the new Saintess until her time to join Ravenwood. "I... I told you to stop mentioning Lady Hoarfrost's name!"
"Aww, and why can't she say my name, dearie?" A voice sounded from the doorway, as a lithe lady stood there, the entire area feeling even colder as frost formed slowly around the woman. Meredith didn't even need to read the info box, to know who she was.
The Books of Grimoire, more commonly known simply as Grimoire, was a popular VRMMORPG that focused on player autonomy in all aspects. The game starts with the death of an NPC named merely 'The Saintess.' What happens when, one day, a player wakes up to find themselves as the Saintess doomed to die at the very start?
