This time louder more prolonged than any previous; followed immediately by deafening roar rushing water flooding interior spaces once safe now doomed vessel – drowning screams trapped crewmen unable escape fates sealed moments prior when Amelia herself had stepped willingly into chamber meant save one life among three lost today here beneath ocean's waves...

She closed eyes tightly against tears threatening spill forth unwanted unbidden; instead focusing solely inward drawing strength resolve remain steadfast purpose set out accomplish before all ended.

Minutes ticked by agonizingly slow – each second stretching eternity itself seemed stretch further still until finally... silence fell absolute outside chamber walls surrounding her now safe cocoon amidst chaos reigning beyond...

Amelia opened eyes blinking away moisture gathered corners lids during interminable wait just passed. She peered through porthole window out onto scene unfolding before very own orbs – watching in horrified fascination as monstrous form materialized suddenly from shadows encroaching *Leviathan*'s stricken hull.

It was unlike anything she'd ever seen nor imagined possible exist anywhere within Earth's depths let alone mere miles beneath surface itself... Massive tentacle-like appendages writhed sinuously around wreckage tearing apart metal like tissue paper – revealing glimpses fleshy pinkish interior revealed gaping maw filled row upon razor-sharp teeth capable reducing anything unlucky enough cross paths into pulp...

Amelia watched transfixed terror gripping heart tight vise unable tear gaze away despite revulsion turning stomach roiling nausea within. This was creature responsible taking out external cameras earlier – now feasting remains crewmates once shared space alongside her mere hours ago before tragedy struck severing bonds forevermore.

Suddenly, one tentacle snaked forward striking glass portal directly opposite Amelia herself sending shockwaves reverberating through entire chamber structure itself groaned ominously under assault. She flinched back instinctively raising arms protect face though knew futile against such force exerted mere inches away...

Tentative exploratory proddings continued several more moments before finally creature seemed satisfied nothing edible remained behind barrier separating it from potential meal inside – retreating once again into darkness whence came leaving wreckage settle quietus beneath crushing pressures bearing down relentlessly above.

Amelia let out breath held tight lungs burning throughout ordeal just endured. She slumped back wall relief washing over exhausted body mind both drained emotional toll recent events exacted...

But respite proved temporary; scarcely had she begun recover composure when another jolt sent shudders resonating chamber walls themselves – this time accompanied eerie grinding noises metal protesting limits endurance could no longer withstand forces tearing apart seams hull itself.

She looked up sharply eyes widening realization dawned too late... Porthole window shattered inward sending shower glass fragments raining down upon her helpless cower against far wall...

Amelia screamed shrill piercing cry echoing off confines tiny space now violated mercilessly by monstrous form looming large beyond broken barrier – tentacles writhing wildly antennae quivering sensuously tasting air currents carrying scent fear sweat permeating chamber interior.

It lunged forward jaws gaping wide revealing rows serrated teeth designed rend flesh bone alike; Amelia threw arms up defensively knowing useless gesture against such power unleashed mere inches away...

Then everything went black.

Amelia awoke with a start, heart pounding wildly against ribs as she gasped for breath in ragged gulps – lungs burning desperate lack oxygen now filling chamber alongside something else... Something foul putrid clinging thickly to air itself seemed permeate every inch surrounding space once safe sanctuary refuge amidst chaos reigning beyond.

She blinked away disorientation fogging mind groggy senses struggling regain awareness situation at hand; then froze stock-still terror gripping heart tight vise as memory flooded back sudden rush images seared brain mere moments prior...

Monstrous form looming large through shattered porthole window tentacles writhing wildly antennae quivering sensuously tasting air currents carrying scent fear sweat permeating chamber interior jaws gaping wide revealing rows serrated teeth designed rend flesh bone alike – lunged forward helpless cower against far wall arms raised defensively knowing useless gesture...

Amelia forced herself look around taking stock damage sustained during attack; relief washed over finding no visible injuries beyond few cuts glass fragments embedded skin here and there. She plucked them out gingerly wincing pain each time before tossing aside onto floor beside her.

But physical wounds were farthest concerns now – more pressing issue lay mere inches away where creature still hovered menacing presence outside chamber walls themselves seemingly content merely observe rather than press further advantage gained by breaching barrier separating it from potential meal inside...

She inched backwards slowly cautiously until pressed firmly against wall opposite shattered window; eyes never leaving monstrous form beyond glassless frame now gaping maw darkness itself seemed pour forth threatening swallow her whole any second should whim strike fancy.

Amelia swallowed hard past lump lodged tight throat constricting airflow already shallow rapid breaths coming quick gasps panic rising within chest – fought down urge scream out loud knowing futile against such power unleashed mere inches away...

Instead, she forced mind focus task at hand: escape. somehow manage slip free grasp tentacled horror lurking beyond confines sample chamber meant save one life among three lost today here beneath ocean's waves... Not become fourth victim added tally already far too high.

But how? Chamber door sealed shut behind her when entered earlier – no way open it from inside without proper authorization codes only Alexei possessed now likely drowned along with rest crewmates trapped aboard stricken vessel succumbing forces tearing apart seams hull unable withstand pressure exerted miles above...

She glanced around desperate search alternative exit route might exist somehow amidst tiny metal confines soon become her entire existence until... well whatever lay ahead after that. But nothing presented itself beyond bare walls lined instruments gauges monitoring conditions both inside chamber and outside environment surrounding submersible craft.

Amelia's gaze fell upon small circular hatch set into floor near far corner; recognition dawned sudden rush hope – emergency escape pod designed precisely situations such as this one where occupant finds themselves trapped helpless against impending doom...

She crawled towards it quickly silently keeping low profile lest attract unwanted attention monster still hovering menacing presence beyond broken barrier separating them. Reached out tentative hand grasp handle affixed center hatch lifted lid revealing contents hidden beneath.

Inside lay compact inflatable raft equipped with basic survival gear – flares, water purification tablets, high-energy rations packed lightweight durable packaging designed withstand harshest conditions imaginable...

But most importantly: oxygen tank attached via hose regulator mask combo allowing user breathe freely underwater depths up hundred feet or more depending upon individual lung capacity endurance.

Amelia grabbed everything needed stuffing pockets pouches belt before donningmask securing strap around neck ready deploy once free from confines sample chamber itself. Then turned attention task at hand activating release mechanism would initiate launch sequence sending her hurtling upwards towards surface safety above...

Only problem remained: how gain access hatch sealed tight against pressures bearing down relentlessly below? No manual override existed here – everything automated controlled remotely via mainframe computer system now offline along with rest ship's systems following catastrophic failure occurred hours earlier.

She racked brain frantically search solutions might exist amidst chaos reigning around her; then eyes lit upon small panel affixed wall nearby containing array buttons switches labeled 'EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS'. Desperation fueled hope maybe one activated launch sequence escape pod...

Amelia reached out press button marked 'DEPLOY LIFEBOAT' – nothing happened. Tried another labelled simply '#1', then #2, each time holding breath anticipation something would change situation favorably but disappointment followed as stillness persisted unbroken silence mocking futile efforts.

Frustration mounting Amelia gritted teeth clenching fists determination refuse accept defeat not when salvation lay mere inches away tantalizingly out reach. She scanned panel again more closely this time noticing tiny inscription beneath final button read 'MANUAL OVERRIDE'.

Without hesitation, she slammed fist down hard against it – sudden jolt reverberated chamber walls themselves accompanied loud hiss air venting rapidly through narrow gap now opened between hatch and floor surrounding frame.

Monstrous form outside reacted instantly antennae quivered sensuously tasting changes atmosphere currents carrying scent fear sweat permeating confines sample chamber itself. Tentacles writhed wildly as it lunged forward jaws snapping shut mere inches away where Amelia had knelt moments before...

But too late – hatch lifted clear path revealing gaping maw darkness yawning beneath ready swallow her whole should whim strike fancy once more... Instead, she tumbled backwards into inflatable raft deploying automatically upon contact with water filling rapidly around edges securing occupant safely within confines.

Amelia gasped shocked relief finding herself suddenly buoyed up buoyant craft designed withstand harshest conditions imaginable; glanced back quick check monster's whereabouts – saw tentacles thrashing wildly against sides chamber walls themselves seemingly enraged missed opportunity devour prey escaped grasp last second...

Then, with surge adrenalin coursing veins propelled her upwards towards surface safety above via oxygen tank attached hose regulator mask combo allowing breathe freely underwater depths up hundred feet or more depending upon individual lung capacity endurance.

But even as she rose rapidly away from danger immediate past; couldn't shake feeling unease gnawing insides something wasn’t quite right here – yes, managed escape tentacled horror lurking beneath but at what cost? Left behind entire crewmates trapped aboard stricken vessel succumbing forces tearing apart seams hull unable withstand pressure exerted miles above...

And now faced daunting prospect navigating solo through treacherous waters infested monstrosities unknown depths below; no communication devices remained functional following catastrophic failure occurred hours earlier. Was completely cut off from outside world entirely reliant own wits survival instincts alone amidst vast oceanic abyss stretching out endless every direction visible horizon.

Amelia steeled resolve push aside doubts fears plaguing mind focused solely task at hand: reach surface safely then figure rest later once secure aboard rescue vessel surely dispatched search missing submersible craft...

"Fragments of Forgotten Dreams" is a haunting collection of short stories that delves into the darkest corners of the Cthulhu Mythos. Each tale stands as a fractured piece of a greater cosmic horror, offering glimpses into various times, places, and dimensions where humanity confronts the unfathomable.
In one story, a Victorian archaeologist unearths ancient tablets in the Egyptian desert, only to discover that some hieroglyphs are better left unread. Another follows a modern-day deep-sea researcher who encounters something ancient stirring in the Mariana Trench. A tale set in 1920s New Orleans reveals how jazz melodies can sometimes harmonize with otherworldly frequencies, while a story in contemporary Tokyo shows how digital technology might accidentally open doors to dimensions beyond human comprehension.
The collection explores themes of forbidden knowledge, inherited nightmares, and the fragile nature of human sanity when faced with cosmic truth. Like fragments of a shattered mirror, each story reflects a different facet of humanity's insignificance in an infinite, indifferent universe. The narratives interweave subtle references to the Great Old Ones, creating an underlying connection that suggests all these seemingly separate nightmares might be pieces of one vast, incomprehensible dream.
