A white ceiling awaits Lin Ai as her eyelids unfurl. Her body rests on a soft bed with railings on the sides. Wanting to know the situation, Lin Ai perches up and glances around. She notices a television monitor on the wall, a curtain slide over the door, and an unfamiliar couple standing nearby. The only logical conclusion she came to was that this was a hospital. Her head pulsates making it hard to think. Rubbing her forehead, Lin Ai encounters uncertainty about why or how she is in a hospital.
"Wan Ai Lin, are you okay?"
Wan Ai Lin who? I do not know her. Spooked by the sudden touch of her hands and she came face to face with the foreign woman. A woman who had a youthful heart-shaped face frame with black wisps of hair while the remaining hair got tied up in a smooth out bun. Her willow-leaved eyes are golden with light natural makeup. Ruby color stains her medium size lips. She wore a navy-blue business skirt with a match white blouse and a navy blazer. Anyone could sense her confident demeanor just by presences alone. The man standing next to her looks older but not aged. He had short ebony hair, slanted deep brown eyes, with slight wrinkles along the corner edges. A silk navy blue suit with matching inner shirt and slacks covers his body. He had on oxford brown shoes.
A concerned expression was evident on her face as she rubs the back of Lin Ai's hands. Unsure of what to say, she kept quiet. Overcome with unease, Lin Ai abruptly yanks her hands away from the woman's touch.
"Ai Lin, what is the matter?"
"Who are you two?" she asks.
"Don't you remember? I am your mother, and he is your father."
No words sprang to mind as Lin Ai shook her head. She recalled the disturbing experience of that woman's gruesome act. Lin Ai glance at the wall, trying to figure out the time of day.. The clock read ten-thirty. A stifling silence pervades the room. What are you supposed to say to strangers one hardly knows? Licking her lip, Lin Ai felt the awkward tension in the room. A man dressed in a doctor's uniform enters the room, breaking the silence.
"How's patient Ai Lin today?"
"Doctor, there is something wrong with her. She does not remember us!"
"Mrs. Wan, calm down. Your outburst will not levitate the situation.” Doc says.
"What is wrong with her?"
"I checked her condition. Miss Wan suffers from post-traumatic amnesia."
"What does that mean?" asks the lady.
"Post-traumatic amnesia is a common symptom of concussion, which can cause memory loss."
"Oh! How long would the memory loss last?" her mother questions.
"It can last a few minutes, days, or sometime even months. Recovery can be fast or slow, depending on the patient."
While the two of them continue talking, Lin Ai remains quiet while sitting in bed. These people are my parents. The doctor said I have post-traumatic amnesia, yet her mind is very clear. Pretty sure I am Lia Lin Ai. How long do I have to be here? I will just act like I know nothing and try to figure things out. Ugh! Everything is confusing, so I will have to wait and see what happens.
The doctor left the room after finishing his examination and explanation. Her hand got grasp by the woman once again.
"Ai Lin don't worry. We will help you in any way we can." She spoke.
"How long will I have to be here?"
"You will stay here overnight. Tomorrow morning, we can leave and help you adjust at home." She answers.
Words seem to vanish from her mind, causing this atmosphere to be awkward. The woman kept open and closing her mouth like she wanted to say something. Ultimately, she sat in a chair facing the bed and look at her phone. Was I curious about what she was doing on her phone? Of course not, I couldn't care less what a stranger who claims to be my mother does. For one thing, there is not much to do besides watching T.V or sleep. Feeling bored, Lin Ai falls back into bed and glances through the window. Red, orange, and yellow colors blended into a beautiful hue spread across the sky, denoting a late afternoon.
Several minutes pass as her ears pick up the sound of the door clicking open. Turning, Lin Ai's gaze saw an unfamiliar young woman walk in. Sitting up once more, she saw the woman had medium length shiny onyx hair beautifully accentuating her round face with minimal makeup and her lips had pink tinted color. Her pupils were dark brown, so close to jet. No sign of blemish was visible on her smooth skin. She wore a white crop top blouse, a sable skirt with a black belt and a pair of ballet flats. Lin Ai eyes widened with surprise and her muscles tenses up when the woman embrace her in a powerful hug. Lin Ai attempted to push her away, but to no avail.
"Ai Lin, I came immediately as soon as I heard the terrible news from your mom!"
"Who the heck are you?" Lin Ai asks, trying hard to push her away.
The strange woman back away after squeezing her a few more times. A sigh of relief escapes Lin Ai's lips.
"It's me, Han Wanhui, your best friend." She replies.
Han Wanhui went to the other woman and initiated a conversation. Lin Ai had no choice but to listen.
"Mrs. Wan, do not worry. I will try my best to help Sister Ai recover her lost memories."
"Xiao Hui, thank you for coming and offering help," says Mrs. Wan.
"No problem. You guys should do whatever you need to do. I can stay here with her overnight."
"We will take up on your offer. I really appreciate you staying with our Xiao Ai." Mrs. Wan says.
They are deciding without asking for my opinion. I don't want any of these strangers here. Just thinking about being alone with them makes me anxious. The couple gathers up their things. Before departing, Mr. Wan presses his lips to Lin Ai's forehead. Her eyes widen in astonishment at the sudden gesture. For the first time, she experienced a new thing. My father has never expressed affection for most of my life. He only gives orders, and I must follow. Shortly after, she was alone with the woman Han Wanhui.
Great, another random person who I have to deal with. I do not know what we could converse about. I wish she had left the couple. So, I could be alone with my thoughts. Since she asserts, we are best friends. I am clueless about what to do. I lack any knowledge about her. Perhaps she will divulge information if I listen and respond to her. After all, there is nothing to do except to watch T. V.
"Sister Ai Lin, are you uncomfortable anywhere?"
"Umm… I am fine." Lin Ai replies.
"Don't be afraid to let me know if you need anything."
"Okay, I will." Lin Ai spoke.
The room was brimming with silence. Lin Ai rubs the nape of her neck, feeling awkward. Now what? Should I ask questions I am curious about? Maybe I should go to sleep instead or stall in the bathroom. Unsure what to say, she looks around and kept squeezing the blanket.
"Ai Lin, what is the matter?"
"I need to use the bathroom," Lin Ai says, as heat rises in her chest.
"Do you need help to get there?"
"Can you help me there? I can do the rest?" Lin Ai request.
Han Wanhui lends a hand in helping her to stand. She props herself against Han Wanhui as we proceed to the bathroom. As soon as Lin Ai heard the clicking of the door, she exhaled audibly. Was I too apparent in my attempt to be weak? I better examine myself to determine why they kept calling me Wan Ai Lin. Amble her way to the sink, Lin Ai's jaw hung agape upon seeing the silhouette reflect in the mirror. Wavy long hair hung past her chest. Golden eyes stare back at her. A dimple is on her lower right cheek.
Oh my! I can't fathom this! Am I in the woman's body who brutally assaulted me? How could this happen to me?! I should be Lia Lin Ai. Is this a prank or a jinx? Taking a deep breath and exhaling, Lin Ai slapped her cheeks, praying this horrid situation was not real. I need to figure things out slowly. For now, I better do what I told her. She won't want me to stay here for too long. She hurried to use the toilet. For a while, Lin Ai twirled her thumbs because she didn't want to face her.
"Ai Lin, are you alright in there?"
"Yeah, I am coming." She answers.
As soon as she was out of the bathroom, Han Wanhui helps her back to the bed. Lin Ai thanks her. The silent, awkward atmosphere felt stifling. A few minutes in, Han Wanhui broke the silence by asking, "What is on your mind?"
"Since I can't recall anything. I have been wondering how long have we been friends?" Lin Ai question.
"We have been friends since we were little."
"Oh, how close were we?" she inquires, raising her brows.
"Like sisters, we practically told each other everything."
"? Can you please tell me more?" Lin Ai probe, looking straight into Han Wanhui's eyes.
"Well, you are a harlot."
"What!" she exclaims.
"Calm down! Oops, I should have waited until you recover before telling you that."
Han Wanhui pushes her to lie down and pulls the blanket up to Lin Ai's chin.
"You should go to sleep now. Rest is essential for recovery. I will stay here to watch over you."
Her statement sounds like an insult, but I could not put my finger on it. Is Han Wanhui telling the truth or a falsehood when she said this body is a harlot? How can I sleep after hearing such information? I simply know this body's name is Wan Ai Lin. How much does she know about this body's past? Ugh! Does this mean in the future I can't avoid her? Perhaps I can process the whole matter later. Since there was nothing else to do, Lin Ai rested there. Her gaze notices Han Wanhui texting someone. Lin Ai was inquisitive about who it was, but she did not want to meddle in Han Wanhui's affairs. So, the question never surfaced from her mouth. For a while, Lin Ai quietly lies there before gradually drifting off to sleep.
