Taking the elevator to the lobby, I looked through Vivica and Maggie’s channel on my phone. Vivica’s alibi holds up as she was livestreaming Nightmare Chasers. Maybe I should watch some more streams, I could further improve my build.
The elevator chimed, and the doors slid open. At the front desk was Bethany and Raj. They were behind the computer desk; Raj was sitting in the computer chair typing something on the computer. While Bethany stood leaning over him, watching as he typed.
“I’m just not good with computers Raj, that’s why I’m so lucky to have you!” Bethany said, moving the hair in front of her face behind her ear.
“I may not be tech support, but even I can handle a basic update software update. All thanks to YouTube University.” Raj said, clicking the mouse, sitting back in his chair.
“Yeah, but the people in those videos go way too fast and some of their accents are so thick it's hard to understand what they are saying.” Bethany looked over at me as I approached the desk. She stood straight up and adjusted her. “Hey there Tom! The detective called and mentioned that her and the crime scene team were on their way. The storm has died down considerably.” Bethany said, waving at me.
Fuck, I need to move fast to solve this case. “Oh, that’s great news to hear. Hopefully, they can resolve this quickly.” I said, now standing in front of the desk. “I’m just curious, what were you two doing while Maggie was, you know…”
“I was fast asleep, and I heard the screams. I’m not all that great in a fight since I lost my leg in a construction accident. Plus, this thing squeaks. It makes sneak attacks impossible. Once the screams died down, I came out to see that horrific scene.” Raj said. There was a little squeak as Raj stood up. “I’m going to get started working on my duties. I won't get a wink of sleep with the thought of that girls screams still fresh in my mind.” The metallic squeak from Raj's prosthetic leg echoed through the lobby as he made his way toward the elevator.
“I was sleeping here, at the front counter.” Bethany said. “I was having such a terrible nightmare. I was on a roller coaster, and it was just me on the ride. It was going so fast it went off the tracks and it crumpled up like a can on the ground below. I woke up screaming and then I realized someone else was screaming too and that’s when Drake came by, and we went to the scene of the crime.
"You probably shouldn’t admit to a guest you sleep on the job.” I said.
“Yeah, you’re probably right. Drake keeps telling me not to over-share with guests.” Bethany looked to the floor and then moved her hair behind her ear once again. “Where were you when all the craziness was happening?”
“I was just about to fall asleep, but then I heard the screams, and I ran down as fast as I could. By the way, do you know where I can find Drake? I just need to ask him a quick question.”
“He’s watching the camera footage in the back; But I’m sure I can help you with anything you need.” Bethany said returning my gaze with a radiant smile that dimpled her cheeks and crinkled the corners of her bright eyes, staring at me so intensely it felt like she was looking through my soul.
“If I can check the security room's for the camera's error message, it might tell me how to fix it. Then we'll be able to catch the killer.” I asked.
“I don’t think I can bring you in there. Drake’s real strict about guest going into employee only zones.” Bethany said, looking away, then met my gaze again, smiling at me. “But I could get you in there on one condition.”
“If it gets me back there, sure, what do you want?”
“I want you to take me on a date.” Bethany said, biting her lip and looking at me more intimately.
My face immediately turned red. “Uhhh, I actually have a girlfriend, but I may know someone that will be single soon.” I said, pulling my phone out and showing her a picture of Karlo. “If you let me in back there, I can put in a good word for you.”
“Oh my gosh, he’s so hot!” Bethany said, drooling. Snapping out of her gaze, she wiped the spit off her mouth. “Okay, follow me.” Bethany waved at me to follow her.
Walking around the front counter, I followed her into the back room. Drake slumped before his dual monitors, running his fingers through his disheveled hair as scattered papers cluttered his desk like fallen leaves. Hearing our footsteps, he jerked his head over to us, his fatigued eyes darting between us as we entered the room. “Dammit Bethany, I’ve told you repeatedly not to bring guest back here.” Drake said as he pinched the bridge of his nose. “Whatever I know, it wasn’t you, Tom. I saw the footage of you on your floor.”
“Does that mean you found the murder?” I said, standing behind him, looking at the computer screen.
“Unfortunately no,” Drake said, turning the monitor towards me and Bethany. “As you can see, the camera is broken, so there is no video and we can only hear the audio.”
While we watched the video, we heard a door open. There was a pleasant voice. I assumed was Maggie. Her pleasant voice quickly turned into screams of bloody murder, turning into the same scene we all heard before. But something caught my attention. I heard a noise; it was one that I heard before. “Hey, can you play video one more time? I think I heard something. This time rewind little bit earlier before Maggie says hi,” I said, getting closer to the screen. Drake rewound the video and then pressed play one more time.
The strange noise echoed again, and this time I knew exactly what it was. I know who killed Maggie.
