Detective Rose let out a deep sigh. “These are always the worst cases to solve. But regardless, good work Tom. We wrapped this up quicker than I thought.” Detective Rose said, breaking the silence and turning towards me, “Let’s move onto a brighter subject. Tom, tell me about this guy you’re setting Bethany up with.”
“Oh my gosh, yes! Show Detective Rose his picture!” Bethany said, jumping up and down. “He’s so hot!”
“Uh sure, one sec.” I pulled out my phone and showed her a picture of Karlo.
“Hold on, is that Karlo, The Batman of the USA?” Detective Rose grabbed the phone and looked at the picture closer.
“Yeah, that’s him. I guess you’ve met him before.” I said, taking my phone back.
"Karlo is one of our top operatives in our special division.” Detective Rose studied me, one hand on her chin, the other perched on her hip. She then turned to Bethany, putting a hand on her shoulder. “I’m sorry, but this one is out of your league. Karlo is definitely not available.”
“Dammit, the best ones are always taken!” Bethany said, throwing her hands in the air. She pouted all the way to over to the elevator.
Detective Rose patted my back and turned to me again. “Sharp ears kid, and very well connected. You ever think of joining the force?"
"Oh no, I’m thoroughly enjoying my career as a machine learning engineer. My problem-solving skills are more suited for data and code related tasks." I said, waving away the offer.
"Well, if you ever consider a career change, just call me," Rose said, reaching into her blazer and handing me her card.
"Uh...Thanks. I'll keep you in mind." I said, putting the card in my pocket.
Detective Rose jotted down my alibi, then she gave me the cleared me to go to my room. I smiled as I laid in my bed, head on the pillow. After this hectic night, I was ready to float off to dreamland. But then my phone rang. Life can be so cruel.
“Hey Syd, I was just about to get some sleep. What’s up?” I said.
“About to sleep its 6 in the morning? Have you been driving all night?” Syd said. I could hear the concern in her voice.
“No, there was a murder, and I solved the case….”
“What!?” Syd said. “Are you okay? Did the murderer try to get you!? How did you…”
“Hey Syd, don't worry everything is alright. I'll explain everything later.” I said, interrupting her.
“You better not forget to tell me. I want to hear all about it! But I called to tell you I found some good prices on an all-adult cruise. Can you take a week off in three weeks?”
“It shouldn’t be a problem. When I log into work, I’ll request off.” I yawned.
“Perfect! Now get some sleep, so you can tell me every detail of the case you solved!” Syd said.
“Sure thing, babe.” I said before saying goodbye and hanging up.
