Sovereign Soldiers

Chapter 9: The First Mission

Chapter 9: The First Mission

Jan 10, 2025

Two years of relentless training under the Sentinel Strike Force had turned Jun Yoshida into an entirely different person. Now a squad leader of the Eastern Division’s Squad 14, Jun’s first task was to lead his team into a live mission. The stakes were high, and the responsibility felt heavier than ever.

Mission Briefing

The mission briefing room was abuzz with quiet murmurs as soldiers filled the seats. Holographic displays projected an image of a distant city, now under attack by Harbingers. The massive humanoid creatures had broken through civilian defenses, leaving destruction in their wake.

Captain Ren Saito stood at the center of the room, his voice calm but commanding.

“Sentinel Strike Force, listen up. A Harbinger battalion has been sighted in Sector Delta-14. Their current trajectory puts them dangerously close to a civilian evacuation zone. Your orders are clear: intercept the battalion and hold the line until reinforcements arrive.”

Jun sat in the front row, flanked by his newly assembled Squad 14. His squad members—each uniquely skilled—were eager but clearly nervous. He couldn’t blame them; this wasn’t a simulation.

Ren’s gaze swept across the room. “Squad 14, you will operate as the vanguard. Squad 19 will provide ranged support, and the aerial division will monitor enemy movement. Any questions?”

Jun raised his hand. “What’s the Harbingers’ estimated strength in this sector?”

“Initial scans indicate a force of approximately 20 to 25 Harbingers. But remember, these aren’t ordinary creatures. They’re durable, adaptive, and relentless. Expect the unexpected,” Ren replied.

Jun nodded, his resolve firm. “Understood.”

Deployment

The Sentinel transport aircraft roared through the skies, carrying Squad 14 toward the battlefield. The squad sat silently, each soldier checking their gear and exchanging glances. Jun’s voice cut through the tension.

“Listen up, Squad 14. This is our first mission together, but we’ve trained for this. Stick to your roles, watch each other’s backs, and trust in your skills. We’ll get through this.”

A young recruit named Kenta looked up, his face pale but determined. “What if we’re outnumbered?”

Jun placed a reassuring hand on Kenta’s shoulder. “Then we fight smarter, not harder. Remember, we’re not alone out there.”

The aircraft’s lights shifted to red as the pilot’s voice crackled over the comms. “Approaching drop zone. Brace for deployment.”

The hatch opened, and the squad leapt into action, descending into the chaos below.

The Battle Begins

The city of Varnok was a warzone. Buildings lay in ruins, smoke billowed into the sky, and the ground trembled under the weight of Harbinger footsteps. Squad 14 landed in the midst of the chaos, their boots crunching against shattered concrete.

“Formation Alpha!” Jun barked, his voice cutting through the noise.

The squad moved with precision, forming a defensive perimeter. The first Harbinger emerged from the smoke—a towering figure with metallic skin that glinted menacingly under the sunlight. Its shape-shifting arms morphed into jagged blades as it roared, charging toward them.

“Focus fire!” Jun commanded.

The squad opened fire with advanced weaponry, their plasma rounds striking the creature’s armored body. The Harbinger staggered but quickly regenerated, its muscles knitting back together.

“Aim for the joints!” Jun shouted. “Slow it down!”

A coordinated volley from Squad 14’s marksmen struck the creature’s knees, bringing it crashing to the ground. Jun seized the opportunity, charging forward with his blade. With a precise strike, he severed the Harbinger’s head, sending its body collapsing into a heap.

“One down,” he muttered, turning to face the next threat.

Holding the Line

As more Harbingers emerged, the battle intensified. Squad 14 fought valiantly, their training and teamwork shining through. Jun’s leadership was put to the test as he coordinated attacks, covered vulnerable positions, and ensured no one was left behind.

Despite their efforts, the Harbingers’ relentless assault began to take its toll.

“We can’t hold this position much longer!” shouted Mei, the squad’s demolitions expert.

“Hold the line!” Jun yelled back. “Reinforcements are on their way!”

Just as the squad’s ammunition ran dangerously low, the distant roar of Sentinel aircraft filled the air. Reinforcements arrived, dropping heavy artillery and additional troops into the fray. Together, the combined forces of the Sentinel Strike Force overwhelmed the remaining Harbingers, driving them back and securing the area.

As the last Harbinger fell, Jun sank to his knees, exhaustion washing over him. Around him, his squad cheered, their relief palpable.

“You did it, Jun,” Kenta said, a rare smile breaking across his face.

Jun shook his head. “We did it. Together.”

Back at the base, Captain Ren stood waiting as Squad 14 returned. Jun approached, saluting sharply.

“Mission accomplished, Captain,” he reported.

Ren’s gaze lingered on Jun for a moment before he nodded. “Good work, Yoshida. You held the line and proved you’re ready for what’s ahead. But don’t get comfortable. This was just the beginning.”

Jun’s jaw tightened, determination flaring in his eyes. “I understand, sir. I’ll be ready.”

As the squad dispersed, Jun stood alone for a moment, staring out at the horizon. The battle had tested him, but it had also affirmed his resolve. The Harbingers weren’t going to stop, and neither would he.

In the year 2050, Earth teeters on the brink of annihilation. Humanity’s survival hangs in the balance as alien invaders and their nightmarish creations descend upon the planet, spreading chaos and destruction. To combat these otherworldly threats, the nations of the world unite, forming the Sentinel Strike Force (SSF)—a global defense initiative armed with cutting-edge technology and humanity’s brightest minds.

But technology alone isn’t enough. Amid the chaos, a new kind of human emerges: the Regades—individuals born with enhanced genomes granting them extraordinary powers. Feared by some, revered by others, the Regades are humanity’s secret weapon in this desperate war.

Desperate times spark innovation. Scientists develop the Super Serum, a breakthrough formula capable of transforming ordinary humans into superhumans. Coupled with anti-proton reactor power suits, towering mechs, and ark reactor tech, the SSF becomes a force to reckon with. Yet, even with these advancements, the war takes a heavy toll. Brave soldiers fall every day, their sacrifices paving the way for humanity’s fragile resistance.

In this chaos, Jun, a sixteen-year-old boy with nothing but determination, enlists in the SSF. Unaware of his hidden potential, he joins the ranks of soldiers fighting to protect the Earth. But as the war unfolds, Jun discovers secrets about the aliens, the Regades, and even himself—secrets that could change the course of the war.

Would Jun rise as humanity’s beacon of hope? Or will he fall, like countless heroes before him, in the fight to make the world a better place?

This is a story of survival, sacrifice, and the unyielding will of a boy destined to shape the future.
