18: When We Let Ourselves Be Tempted By The Truths Of the Past

18: When We Let Ourselves Be Tempted By The Truths Of the Past

Jan 13, 2025

- I don't know. Kiara affirmed honestly, raising her brows

For about fifteen minutes, the ghost group along with Marilou took the time to think about it. Evidently, a million questions tormented her, torturing her restlessly.

How did these spirits ended up arriving here? At first, the girl thought she was alone, but Rebecca and the others barged in at some point by an odd door that was never there before.

That's why Marilou always wanted to know everything. Along the day, the teen kept on asking questions, distractedly. She didn't want to be impolite, considering some questions could've offended some of them.

It's as if she was implying that they didn't exist at all. Which wasn't the case, naturally, but they could've taken it personally. Noticing how absent she was, Kiara nudged her elbow in her chest, trying to pull her out of her trance.

- Yes? She hiccuped weakly, glaring at her deadly, holding her sides

Swifting her dirty blonde hair to the side, Kiara cleared her throat and shook her head, looking at her curiously.

- You're distracted, young girl. Commented the adult

- Distracted? Marilou raged, Don't I have the permission to be distracted?

- I didn't say the contrary. Kiara said, frowning

Feeling stupid, Marilou sighed deeply, shifting her gaze towards the entire group. Her throat tightening, her eyes flickering.

- Good. Now what's on your mind?

Noticing how insistent the ghosts' glares were, she felt her heart throbbing. They wanted her to say everything. The youngest or the oldest; all eyes were on her.

- W-well....She stuttered

Rebecca's gaze darkened, becoming creepy and murky, with a hint of mischief. The youngest gulped and took a deep breath, meeting their eyes.

- I want to know how you guys came into this place, considering how you weren't here at the first place.

- Oh, we were here at the first place. This room has more secrets than you think it has, murmured Matis, the others agreeing to his words

- Oh, you don't want to know the truth about how we came here, another girl added

- Yes, I wanna know how you guys arrived here. It can't be worse than me. Marilou declared confidently, her hands on her waist

They all stopped talking, looking at her with a challenging gaze. Nobody dared to speak. Which would've been stupid in the situation. Without a doubt, this comment dropped embarrassment on the group.

A delicate child, short and as soft as an angel, stepped in carefully. Her hair was a lavander color, falling along her shoulders with grace; she was like a princess.

 - Are you sure you want to know? She questioned with her angelic voice

- I'm sure. Marilou confirmed with a nod, without leaving the girl's gaze

- Okay. You can call me Amber.

***

Fifteen minutes later, the spectrums said the truth to Marilou. Which left her speechless. She couldn't believe it. They were kidnapped by the Wendigo a hundread years ago.

Before, the creature didn't have a spirit, but it came once it felt the presence of other spirits. Taking the possession of twenty five souls brought it back to life, the Wendigo stayed alive keeping the body it wanted to keep, eating more souls over and over again.

To escape that place, they needed their souls back. Presently, they were kept by the Wendigo, deeply protected. It didn't want to remove them, or else it would die.

- Contacting my brother would be useful, what do you think? If we find a way to communicate, I don't know. Everyone's looking for me, my family plus Alfred William Smith.

- Probably, but for that, you'd need a mirror. Rebecca replied, thoughtful, scratching her forehead

Confused, the young girl arched her brows and squinted her eyes. A mirror? It's not like there was a way to another world, like that. Are there other worlds? Surely, if Wendigos exist.

- A mirror? In that case, screaming his name is an option.

- Not exactly, Kiara laughed as she shook her head, We need blood.

Marilou remained silent, her eyes widening in fear. Everyone stared at her critically, as if she has never heard the word blood in her entire life. Ignoring their judgements, the eldest took a deep breath.

- Oh well, that blood would belong to who then?

- You, obviously. An old man snickered, gripping his beard

- We don't have weapons. Marilou spoke softly, her face becoming white

Numerous spirits laughed softly, the man pulling out of his pocket a wooden box. While he lifted the cover, the teen could distinguish a delicate blanket covering something.

- What is it? The young girl asked, tilting her head to the side, her eyes sparkling with curiosity

Without saying a single word, the man picked out a small dagger along with a small mirror that could've been used for makeup. Marilou's face turned white again as she realized.

- Good. Alright. Why didn't you take your very own blood, then?  It's not a huge difference.

- Of course there's a difference, he vociferated, we need the blood of a living human. Now stay still if you want to talk to your stupid brother.

The teen shifted her gaze away, directing it to the floor instead. He couldn't see her like that. Weak. Vulnerable. Flinching at the view of blood was considered a weakness for some people, even pathetic.

Brutally, the man cut a small line on Marilou's forearm, making her wince, caught off guard by the brutal move.

- Ow! She grumbled in a low voice, hugging herself

- Marilou? Her brother's voice said throughout the mirror, a low whimper
