Late night

Late night

Jan 14, 2025

"Welcome to my humble abode." Aiden says, waving his hands in a fancy flourish. We step inside, and I'm instantly hit with a sense of calmness and tranquility.

His house is... surprisingly neat. The wooden floor, the furniture with white accents, and indoor plants give it a rusty, homey feeling. The house is silent, save for the occasional crickets chirping and the soft breeze that passes the trees nearby. Soft, silver moonlight casts streams of light through the windows and onto the furniture.
Woah.
I did not realise it was
this late at night. Maybe coming here was a mistake.

But Aiden is already leading me inside, switching on the lights and everything. I'm going to leave after a while anyway, so its fine.
I hope.

We sit in the living room, because sitting in his room would be weird. I sink down on the couch, finally relieved to be somewhere safe. Then again, anywhere away from Brandon is safe.
"So, uh..." I honestly do not know what to say.

Suddenly, this whole ordeal is awkward and weird. Me and the worst guy on planet earth, who I also went on a date with today, are sitting in his house in the middle of the night. Tell me, does it not sound strange? Because it is. And at this point, I don't even know what we are anymore.
Friends? Rivals? Aquaintances?

I try to take my mind off of these bizarre thoughts because lets face it, I’m better off without them swimming in my mind.
“Is Naomi sleeping?” I sheepishly ask. Of course she is sleeping, you dumbass; she isn’t a freaking vampire! I tell myself, cringing mentally.
“Yeah, I mean, I hope so. She’ll be weirded out if she sees us sitting here in the middle of the night.” He replies, almost as if he is talking to himself.
"Yeah, that would be weird, haha. Yep.” Ok, I should seriously stop talking. My conversation skills should be questioned, because Aiden gives me a weird look.
Silence ensues, and I shiver despite myself. The cold breeze coming from the half open window is not helping.
I prop my legs up on the couch, hugging my knees.

More silence.

Finally, Aiden breaks the quiet by asking me how long I'm going to stay here, and I cannot help but wonder if thats a subtle hint of him asking me to leave as soon as possible. Which is reasonable and expected of him, but I still feel a little dejected. I brush it off though, and tell him I'll be out of his hair— and house— quite soon.
He frowns.
"Chill, I just asked you that 'cuz I wanted hot cocoa and wanted to know if you were gonna stick around to have a cup." He says, with a bored expression.
Oh. I was worrying for no reason then. And anyway, a hot cocoa will be nice and warm, perfect in this chilly weather. Besides, I'm still reeling from the events that occured today, so maybe it will calm me down.

Aiden strides to the kitchen, and I ask him if I can help. Because I'm nice that way. Unsurprisingly, he denies, saying I'd just mess everything up.
Typical Aiden.
A few minutes later, we're on the couch again with steaming mugs of hot cocoa in our hands, topped with marshmellows. Its almost comforting being here at this hour, just sitting in the silent night, sipping on the sweet heaven that is cocoa.
And if it were anyone else, I'd fall asleep right here right now.
But uh... its not.
-----
We finish our drinks without much talk, and for the first time in hours, I check my phone. Its two a.m. which is wild because I've never been within a three feet radius of Aiden for more than two hours, tops.
My inbox is mostly empty, save for a few messages from Lyn asking me how the date went. It went great. Totally.
So great.

I was about to put my phone down, when I notice another text from an unknown number. I usually ignore these kinds of messages but the preview that comes up when you don't initially open the text seems pretty weird.
It reads: I know you were...
They knew I was what? I hesitantly click on the text.
I know you were at the Diner today.

Ashley finds herself in a precarious situation with a persistent (and creepy) suitor, desperate for an escape. Thinking on her feet, she grabs the closest person and claims they are dating, only to find out it's her sworn enemy, Aiden.

God, anyone but him.

They've always argued and annoyed each other to no end, but now they need to pretend to be in a relationship in order to drive the creep away.

But as time passes, it becomes increasingly difficult to deny the growing bond between them.

(there may or may not be some amount of cliches and cringyness but thats the way I like it) Also many thanks to my twelve year old self for conjuring up this random novel idea- she was a weirdo but I love her nonetheless.
