I am the human emperor

Chapter 14: Knight's Honor

Chapter 14: Knight's Honor

Jan 17, 2025

Night.

Ron and Helen stood at the entrance of the cemetery.

The dilapidated gravestones were scattered messily around, and the ground was covered with dark red mycelium. Under the flickering light of the lamps, the miserable white stone houses in the distance loomed indistinctly.

The cemetery administrator was named Marcus, an elderly knight who had participated in the construction work of the town. Moreover, he was one of the outstanding knights among them - this piece of information was not known to everyone, but Helen could fully guarantee its accuracy.

However, according to the other townspeople, Marcus was a withdrawn and strange person. He didn't show any kindness to anyone who broke into the cemetery. Sometimes, he would even roughly drive away those who strayed in. And worst of all, his attitude towards the graveyard keepers wasn't much better either.

Helen glanced at Ron.

But she thought it was hard to say who was in a worse situation.

Ron stepped into the cemetery.

The door of the pavilion slowly opened outward. As Ron entered, an old man with slow movements walked out from inside. He looked coldly at the two civilians who had walked into his territory.

[Blood Servant Individual - Biological Energy Level 1-3]

"Are you here to work?" the knight asked indifferently.

Helen said from behind Ron:"Yes, Lord Knight. We're the new graveyard keepers...""Hmph." Marcus sneered. "How interesting. You two even have to stay together for work. Maybe in a few days, you'll die together too."

Helen knew what he meant. In the past, there was always only one graveyard keeper in the town. And after they died unexpectedly, Marcus would temporarily take over this responsibility.

But she was very puzzled. Since this job carried the risk of losing one's life, why didn't they recruit more graveyard keepers?

Marcus turned around and walked towards the house:"Follow me."

The administrator's words and deeds caught Ron's attention. Marcus was not a newly turned blood servant from the town but an old knight from the castle. And although his bad attitude was abnormal in the town, in fact, Marcus's behavior was the norm in the Blood Plain.

Ron followed behind him:"Lord Marcus, you..."The administrator slowly turned his head, and his eyes looking at Ron were full of disgust:"Have you inquired about me?"Ron showed a puzzled expression:"Yes. What's the matter?"Ron's question directly interrupted what Marcus was going to say next, and even made the old knight wonder if there was something wrong with himself.

The administrator deliberately lowered his voice:"You humans are always trying every means to take advantage of loopholes. If you could spend the energy you use on this on practicing swordsmanship and fighting, maybe you wouldn't be scared to death by those incompletely transformed ghouls."I know that all young people are longing to become knights. Lady Elizabeth has also given you this opportunity. Everyone wants to show themselves here, but the only thing that can change your fate is hard work, not taking shortcuts."

Ron raised his eyebrows.

In his opinion, the fact that these Blood Clan members became the rulers of the Blood Plain obviously didn't rely on so-called hard work. And these blood servants he had encountered before could only be superior to their former compatriots in status because of "good" luck.

The administrator stepped over the threshold and continued to lecture them:"When I was chosen to become a knight, it was because I showed my swordsmanship in front of Lady Elizabeth. But before I met her, I had already been studying it for twenty-seven years."Since the establishment of Innocent Town, many civilians who only had opportunistic minds in their hearts have become knights, besmirched this honorable title. They also mix with you civilians all day long, not caring about the vows that knights need to abide by."

His hostility towards Ron was not without reason.

What Marcus didn't tell them was that besides the few graveyard keepers who were killed at night in this town, many others had disappeared without a trace.

And when he asked Lord Jonas, he also got the answer - these civilians without any sense of honor had all been sent to the castle and secretly conferred the title of knight.

This was his shame.

Marcus didn't question the ideas of Lady Elizabeth or other nobles. He sincerely thanked the lady for her appreciation, and he could also understand that the noble lords must have their own reasons for doing such things.

But emotionally, he couldn't accept this kind of thing.

And this Helen followed her companion to become a graveyard keeper. She must have also inquired about the information that this job might have benefits.

"These two swords are your weapons for self-defense." Marcus stood at the door, drew out two iron swords, quickly turned around to face the two people standing outside the door, and casually threw the long swords to them.

But the speed of the long swords was not slow at all.

Ron and Helen both showed "flustered" expressions in the face of these sudden projectiles and clumsily caught the iron swords respectively.

Among them, although Helen's expression was deliberately made by herself, she really couldn't catch this sharp weapon very well. And Ron's performance was slightly better than hers, but he still looked rather embarrassed.

In Ron's judgment, unless one reached the level of Ⅰ-1, it was impossible to catch the long sword gracefully by instinct.

Marcus stood in front of them and shook his head:"In the wilderness, you may be raided by enemies at any time. If you perform so poorly at that time, you would have died several times already."You now have three days. Learn how to use the sword by yourselves. Compared to your predecessors, you also have each other as sparring partners. If you can't master the weapons in your hands immediately, just wait to be killed."

Although Ron's performance was passable, whether he could pass the test still depended on the result in a few days.

As for Helen...

Marcus didn't have a good impression of this person who forced her way here. Jonas couldn't have arranged this job for her. She must have come on her own initiative.

In that case, Marcus didn't show any mercy to her either.

Since they inquired about his information but didn't find out that those dead people actually had good fighting skills and couldn't have been killed by the incompletely transformed ghouls at all.

Except for one fool who was scared to death alive, the other graveyard keepers were all killed by Marcus himself.

Since he couldn't stop the nobles from selecting knights, at least he could ensure that the knights who left the cemetery deserved this honor.
