Beyond the Ivy Walls

Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Jan 19, 2025

The following day after the attack, the sky was heavy with a grey color, as the atmosphere was quite overcast—somber by nature, it seemed to be fitting perfectly with the mood that now took precedence at Harvard University. Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, this prestigious school of higher education was not just known for its outstanding academic excellence but also a long and storied history that reached back into the centuries. Still, whispers of scandal and danger now reverberate through the historic halls, where just a short time ago, a louder and prouder call was made for a better reputation.

Eleanor "Ellie" Hart slowly came out of her sleep, snuggled in her modest yet snug apartment, reliving the moments of last night and every little detail engraved in her mind. Her instincts were screaming at her—a visceral warning that the violent assault she had suffered was anything but random. Indeed, it felt as though the involvement of Caleb Foster was one critical thread in a greater tapestry of intrigue, begging to be pulled and examined further. She got dressed fast and with purpose, her choice of attire as practical as ever, making sure she was ready and prepared to dive right into the overwhelming mystery ahead. With a sense of urgency, her morning routine unfolded as she prepared herself with a cup of robust and invigorating coffee, while simultaneously casting a quick eye over the latest headlines. These headlines were already alive with lively discussions and rampant speculation surrounding a recent attack that had targeted one of the most esteemed and respected universities in the entire nation.

First things first, she headed to the office of her mentor, Dr. Elias Warren, a man of great repute in the field of forensic medicine and well-known throughout the land as an authority in his craft. He also played a very important role in her life, acting as a sort of father figure and guiding light for her both professionally and personally. His office, tucked away in a quiet, almost hidden corner of the campus, was a place of solace due to its delightful clutter, with books and papers scattered about, telling a tale of a lifetime spent in academic pursuit and intellectual exploration. The moment she opened the door, the recognizable and comforting aroma of aged paper mixed with the rich smell of freshly brewed coffee wafted up into her nostrils, creating that inviting aura of being home.

She entered, and Dr. Warren looked up from his desk, concern mingling with curiosity in his expression. "I heard about the incident last night," he said, motioning her to take a seat. "I had a feeling you might get involved."

Elllie nodded, appreciating his perceptiveness. "I was there, Elias. It was chaos. But there's more to it than what the police are saying. I need your help to make sense of it."

Dr. Warren leaned back in his chair and steepled his fingers, a gesture that suggested he was going to give this considerable thought. "Tell me everything," he urged in a low, reassuringly steady tone.

As she told him of events the previous night, Ellie saw Dr. Warren's expression go from mild curiosity to intense concentration. She finished talking, and he slowly nodded. "Dr. Greene's research has been stirring up quite a bit of controversy. If what you're saying is true, this attack could be linked to something much larger."

Elllie leaned forward, her eyes earnest. "Caleb Foster, too. He was close to Dr. Greene and disappeared right after the attack. I really think he knew something—something dangerous."

Dr. Warren tapped a pen on his desk and thought for a second. "You need to talk to those who knew both of them. Faculty or students, at least, who might have witnessed or overheard something that night."

Ellie, feeling a renewed sense of determination welling up inside her, wholeheartedly agreed to proceed with her plans. Under the careful guidance and mentorship of Dr. Warren, she meticulously outlined her comprehensive plan for the day ahead: she intended to conduct interviews with potential witnesses who could provide valuable insights, engage in a much closer and thorough examination of Dr. Greene's office to uncover any pertinent details, and carry out a discreet inquiry into Caleb's background to gather additional information that might be crucial.

Her first stop was the faculty lounge, where Harvard's academic cream congregated to discuss—and rumor-monger. The atmosphere was tense, with hushed, guarded conversations. A few heads turned as she entered, variously curious or suspicious.

She worked her way over to a small cluster of professors who had known Dr. Greene well. The first to speak was Dr. Simon Lang, an elderly member of the History Department. "Terrible business, what happened last night," he said, shaking his head solemnly. "I can't imagine who'd want to hurt him."

Ellie took note of the real shock in his voice but pushed further. "Did Dr. Greene mention any recent threats or strange behavior? Anything that could indicate he was in danger?"

Dr. Lang hesitated, glancing at his colleagues before he replied, "There were rumors, yes. About his research. Some said it was going to expose some unethical practices, but I don't know any details."

Ellie thanked him, sensing that the professors were holding back, bound by a mixture of loyalty and fear. She went on to ask several other faculty members and students, but the responses were similar—hints of something amiss, but no concrete information.

As she entered Dr. Greene's office, she was well aware of the heavy air that the unspoken truths carried with them. The door was locked, but she had acquired the proper permission from the right people to enter this particular room, which had once been the hub for some revolutionary and pioneering work in its field.

The office was alive, a testimony to a life devoted entirely to the academic field: shelves upon shelves filled to the brim with all manner of books, while stacks of papers were strewn haphazardly everywhere across the surfaces. Still, amidst this apparent well-organized chaos, Ellie somehow felt an order beneath the surface, some intentional and premeditated structure suggesting that Dr. Greene had been working on something very important. Sorting through the different materials, she found a series of carefully selected books dealing with such thorny subjects as ethics and law; their pages were heavily annotated, telling of diligent investigation into such a serious issue as academic malpractice.

She began to sort through the voluminous papers painstakingly and slowly in an attempt to find some clues or documents that might enlighten her on the exact nature of the project or research on which Dr. Greene was engaged at the present time. She did not have to search for very long before stumbling upon a stack of files marked "Confidential," which had been carefully concealed in a drawer. As she read through the documents lying before her, she could feel her heart beginning to race with increasing intensity, for the information put forward showed that Dr. Greene was involved in a serious investigation of a distressing series of unethical experiments which had been performed within the precincts of the university and involved a considerable number of top-ranking officials who were supposed to have upheld ethical considerations. Among the documents were not just letters and memos but financial statements, all pointing to an intricate web of deceit and manipulation that had been carefully woven over time.

Elllie's mind reeled with all the current events swimming around in her consciousness: the recent attack that had taken place, the mysterious disappearance of Caleb, and the intriguing yet disturbing elements related to Dr. Greene's research—there seemed to be a connection among these events. But through it all, one burning question kept most prominent in her thoughts: who, exactly, stood to gain something by silencing Dr. Greene and his vital work?

Her phone buzzing broke the silence, signaling that she had received a new message. When she saw the message was from an unknown number, she was surprised, and even more so when the contents proved to be cryptic and impenetrable: "Meet me at Widener Library at midnight. I have information."

Elllie's pulse quickened, racing in her chest. This moment could very well be the breakthrough she needed, that one opportunity that would change everything for her. Still, it had that unmistakable scent of danger that surrounded it. She knew only too well that she had to tread with care in this, but the tantalizing prospect of possible answers and revelations was just too great to be resisted.

All day, she could not stop the questions that continued to run through her mind as she constantly thought about that one message that she had read. She went to all the usual hangouts of students where they spent most of their time—noisy student commons and bustling coffee shops—hoping to catch a snippet of conversation that would be helpful. She even went to the extent of walking across Harvard Yard, the old historic center of the university, where the old trees and the brick walkways added a note of seriousness and somberness to her continuing quest for answers.

As the darkness of night began to fall on everything around her, she stepped cautiously across the sprawling campus grounds in the direction of Widener Library: a great and Gothic building perched on the farthest edge of the campus that whispered its countless academic secrets to the world outside. The high shelves that reached up toward the ceiling and the quiet, reverential atmosphere of the library combined to create an environment that felt like a sanctuary of knowledge and hidden secrets, making it a perfectly fitting venue for their clandestine meeting away from prying eyes.
