Heartfall

Between Life and Death

Between Life and Death

Jan 21, 2025

Orson, his tall figure slowly rising, was about to say something when his face suddenly changed.

The jungle was deathly quiet, and his years of living in the cut - throat world of the mafia had made him perpetually alert.

He licked his chapped lips, a flash of fierce determination crossing his eyes.

He tugged at the corner of Cisco's dress, and like a scared child, shrunk his neck

"Sister, I can feel them... They're catching up."

Cisco's brows furrowed slightly. Her beautiful almond - shaped eyes stared in shock for a few seconds, a look of unprecedented gravity taking over.

She forced down the panic in her heart, took a deep breath, and told herself, "Calm down. I have to stay calm."

Her mind raced as she thought of a way for the two of them to escape.

"This way."

Cisco pointed to the other side, where there was a small path.

She had taken a wrong turn when she first came to the island and had accidentally discovered this route.

"Okay."

Orson masked the bloodlust and coldness in his eyes, looking as docile as a college student. He let Cisco grab his hand and help him walk towards the other direction.

At first, they moved quite fast.

Even though Orson had a bullet wound in his leg, he gritted his teeth and persevered.

Finally, when they were only four or five meters away from the yacht, a gentle smile finally appeared on Cisco's lips.

She had been on edge the whole way, constantly fearing that they would run into trouble. Raised her slender index finger and pointed at the yacht docked nearby.

"Look, it's right up ahead. We're almost there."

Just as Orson was about to reply, his ears twitched.

He quickly pulled Cisco into his arms. Cisco didn't have time to react and found herself in his embrace.

Their eyes met, and she felt as if she was falling into a bottomless abyss.

"Whizz... Whizz..."

The sound of gunshots snapped her back to reality.

She realized that the place where they had just been standing was now covered with bullet holes.

Her pink lips parted slightly as she realized that the man had just saved her life.

Before she could say thank you, she heard the man's urgent voice.

"Run!"

Cisco snapped to attention. Without thinking, she grabbed the man's hand and started running towards the yacht.

At this moment, she had only one thought: if she and this young man were caught, they would both meet a gruesome end.

"Bang..." A bullet was headed straight for Orson's head from behind.

Cisco felt a sudden looseness in her wrist. As she ran,

she saw Orson forced to dodge to the right.

Lin Du, who was in the distance, also sensed something was wrong.

He was awakened by the gunshots.

He had intended to get off the yacht to check the situation, but after walking a few steps, he saw several SUVs speeding towards them.

The gunshots told him everything. Lin Du wasn't stupid. He immediately returned to the yacht and started the engine.

"Miss, hurry up and get on!"

He steered the yacht, quickly docking it at the shore, revving the engine, ready to speed away at any moment.

It was clear that the group of people were after Orson.

Cisco had already climbed onto the yacht. Her hair was soaked with sweat, and she had lost her hat during the run.

Her floral dress was also damp, clinging to her fair skin, making her look delicate and vulnerable. Cisco gasped for breath, feeling as if her calves weighed a thousand pounds.

"I'm going to take off..." Lin Du shouted.

He saw Orson taking cover behind a tree not far away to avoid the bullets.

Cisco bit her lip. Should she save him or not?

"Bang..."

Another loud gunshot rang out from a sniper rifle in the distance, aimed at Orson.

"Ugh..."

Orson, who was hiding behind the tree, was now hit in the right arm.

Blood gushed out, making his already weak body even more unsteady.

Cisco seemed to see herself as a child again, surrounded by guns, at the mercy of others.

She bit her lip once more and made an unprecedented decision and braced herself on the ground and struggled to get up.

Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a thick steel plate at the stern of the yacht.

The plate was about half a person's height, covered in dust, probably left there a long time ago.

Cisco didn't have time to think. She rushed to the stern and strained to lift it.

Lin Du, seeing this, guessed what she was up to. He couldn't bear to see a beautiful girl like her in danger.

He took his hand off the helm and also rushed to the stern to help Cisco lift the heavy steel plate.

The sound of the SUVs was getting closer, the rumbling like the growl of a demon.

Cisco's face turned deathly pale. In the dappled sunlight of the jungle, she could clearly see that the people in the cars were all holding guns high.

"Not good, Lin Du. We have to hurry."

Lin Du, his face red with exertion, used all his strength.

Together, they slowly lifted the steel plate and started walking towards Orson in small steps.

"Bang... Bang..."

As the SUVs got closer, the people in them opened fire on the three of them.

Lin Du held the steel plate tightly, bending low and shrinking his head. The rapid gunfire hit the thick steel plate, making a dull thud.

Orson felt completely drained. Memories flashed through his mind like a movie.

"Is this the end...?"

He gave a bitter laugh and closed his eyes in despair, letting his body slide down the tree.

"Wake up... Wake up!"

A gentle but urgent voice rang in his ears. Orson struggled to open his eyes and saw Cisco, looking at him with a panicked expression, shaking him.

Behind her was a man, struggling to hold something.

"Hurry up. I can't hold on much longer."

Lin Du gasped, his hot breath hitting the side of the steel plate.

The numerous dents on it showed the power of the gunfire.

"Okay, right away."

Seeing that Orson was awake, Cisco shouted. Without hesitation, she tried to put him on her back, holding his legs. "Lin Du, let's go!"

"Okay, you go ahead. I'll cover you."

Lin Du's arm muscles bulged as he exerted more force.

The veins on his arm stood out, and his sinewy muscles unleashed an unprecedented strength. He gritted his teeth and lifted the steel plate.

He slowly started backing away.

The gunshots grew louder and louder.

The impact of the bullets, carrying the threat of death, made it difficult for Lin Du to raise his head.

The SUVs were speeding towards them, getting closer and closer.

Cisco ignored the sweat on her forehead and the pain in her arms. She knew that if she didn't hurry, they were all going to die.

Her delicate lower lip had been bitten hard by her teeth. With another bite, she summoned all her strength and sprinted forward a dozen steps.

Seeing the yacht getting closer, she didn't dare to pause for a second. Finally, they reached the starboard side of the yacht. Without hesitation, she threw Orson onto the deck.

"Lin Du, go start the yacht."

Seeing Lin Du slumped at the side of the ship, almost dropping the steel plate as the bullets hit it,

Cisco crouched down and crawled over to him, shouting anxiously.

Lin Du came to his senses, realizing they were still in danger. He quickly scrambled towards the helm.

"Damn it, Orson had something up his sleeve."

"They're trying to escape. Start the yacht and chase them..."

Malay, mixed with poorly - accented Mexican Spanish, echoed in the distance.
