Fragments of Forgotten Dreams

Jan 22, 2025

Ada and remaining survivors huddled together in makeshift barricade they'd erected using lab equipment, desks turned on their sides – anything to create semblance protection against unseen horror lurking within observatory walls. Hours passed since encounter with cosmic entity; each tick of clock echoing through silence like countdown timer awaiting inevitable doom.

Ada's thoughts raced as she clutched flashlight trembling in her hand, beam flickering across faces etched deep lines fear and exhaustion.
How did we get here? What have I led them into...

"Anything?" Tom asked softly beside her. His eyes reflected desperate hope despite knowing answer already – no signal could penetrate static now choking all communication channels.

She shook head silently before turning attention back towards dimly lit hallway stretching out beyond their flimsy barrier.
What are we waiting for? For it to come and finish us off like Rajiv...

Dr. Chen broke silence suddenly, voice barely above whisper: "I think I hear something."
Everyone froze listening intently; hearts pounding in ears drowning any other sound until faint scratching echoed down corridor – rhythmic tapping against concrete walls growing louder with each passing second.

Ada gripped flashlight tighter knuckles turning white as realization dawned.
It's coming back...

"Stay quiet," she hissed unnecessarily for they were already holding breath, eyes wide staring into darkness where creature lurked unseen yet undeniably present. Scratching stopped abruptly replaced by heavy thudding footsteps resonating through floor beneath them.

Then silence again – oppressive stillness pressing down upon group like physical weight threatening to crush under its sheer intensity.
Waiting... it's playing with us.

Suddenly, lab equipment began vibrating violently sending sparks flying from exposed wires. Monitors flickered displaying distorted images before screens shattered into pieces raining shards of glass onto floor.

"Oh god..." Tom whimpered clutching head between hands as if trying hold brain inside skull amidst chaos erupting around them.
It's in our heads too...

Ada grabbed him by shoulders shaking hard. "Stay with me,Tom! We need to move – now!"

But before anyone could react blinding light flooded room forcing everyone onto ground writhing screaming hands pressed against eyes burning like they'd been seared off.

"Can't see!" Dr. Chen cried out in agony amidst cacophony of screams and metallic groaning as lab furniture twisted into unrecognizable shapes under unseen force.
It's everywhere... inside us, around us – there is no escape!

Ada felt something cold wrap itself tightly round her ankle dragging her away from others despite desperate kicks trying dislodge whatever held on relentlessly. She managed glance back briefly before being pulled out of sight: colleagues thrashing about blindly amidst swirling vortex darkness now consuming entire lab.

"Help me!" she screamed knowing futility plea yet unable stop herself begging for mercy even if only to fill void silence left behind once her voice faded away into nothingness.
No one can hear you... no one will come.

She was dragged through corridors twisting and turning like serpentine path leading straight downwards towards heart observatory – its pulsating core where entity resided feeding off terror coursing veins of those trapped within reach.

Ada slammed against wall hard enough to knock wind out lungs; pain exploded behind eyes but still she struggled crawl away only for unseen force pin her place mercilessly.
You cannot escape. You belong here now.

Her vision cleared slowly revealing vast chamber filled with writhing tendrils pulsating rhythmically in syncopated dance macabre – each movement accompanied by wet slapping sounds echoing through cavernous space like grotesque symphony played solely for her benefit.

At center loomed monstrosity defying description: amorphous mass of flesh and metal intertwined forming something both alive yet utterly alien. It throbbed with sickening intensity, veins bulging beneath translucent skin revealing glimpses inner workings – gears turning cogs meshing together in intricate dance deathly precision.

Ada watched horrified as tendrils snaked outwards wrapping themselves around struggling forms of colleagues dragged here alongside her; their bodies contorted into unnatural shapes before being absorbed entirely within monstrous entity's embrace.
No... not like this!

She tried call out names but voice caught in throat choking back sobs witnessing friends turned fodder for cosmic abomination feeding off humanity itself.

Then silence fell once more – oppressive stillness broken only by soft hum resonating from depths chamber. Tendrils retreated leaving behind empty space where people had been mere moments ago; now replaced with grotesque parodies their former selves: twisted flesh sculptures oozing ichor onto floor below, eyes wide open staring accusingly at Ada.

"You're next," whispered voice echoing through mind – cold harsh truth she couldn't deny any longer.
This is your fate... this will be you soon.

Ada closed her eyes accepting inevitable end awaiting when sudden burst pain exploded across chest knocking breath from lungs. She gasped opening mouth wide only to find it filled with warm liquid metallic taste coating tongue, sliding down throat burning like acid.

Looking downward she saw massive tentacle impaled through torso exiting back amidst gush blood staining clothes crimson red – her own life force draining away onto cold stone beneath feet.
This is how I die... alone in darkness.

But instead of fear or regret final thought crossing mind was relief knowing suffering would soon end; no more terror, pain nor grief tearing apart soul piece by agonizingly slow piece.

Tentacle withdrew leaving behind gaping wound exposing raw flesh and shattered ribs. Ada slumped forward collapsing onto ground amidst pool spreading out around her like halo darkness – last thing she saw before vision blurred then faded completely into blackness was grotesque parody Rajiv smiling down at her with rows jagged teeth dripping ichor.
Join us, Ada... become one.

Then everything went silent; world reduced to pinprick light fading away until nothing remained but endless void stretching out forever in all directions.

Yet amidst this vast emptiness something stirred – tendril of consciousness reaching outward seeking connection within infinite expanse cosmos. It found her there adrift amongst stars and galaxies swirling together into dance eternity, whispering words echo through time itself:

"Welcome home."

Ada and remaining survivors huddled together in makeshift barricade behind upturned tables, listening to unearthly symphony echoing through observatory – pulsating hums punctuated by wet slapping sounds reminiscent flesh being torn apart. Fear hung heavy like palpable thing; each breath drawn laborious task amidst stifling tension.

"Anything?" Ada whispered towards Tom who clutched radio receiver tightly, eyes darted nervously between her and door leading back into lab where monstrosity lurked.
Please say something... anything.

He shook head silently before speaking barely audible: "Static. Just static."
Ada nodded grim understanding; they were cut off from world outside – isolated with whatever hellish creature now stalking their corridors

Dr Chen leaned over towards Ada, voice trembling slightly as she asked:
"What do we know about these things? Anything at all?"
Anything that might help us survive this nightmare.

Ada hesitated before answering truthfully: "Not much. They're... not from here."
"Not human?" DrChen clarified further.
"No," Ada replied firmly shaking head, memories of Rajiv's mangled corpse fresh in mind serving grim reminder power these entities wielded over fragile mortal bodies.

Suddenly hum outside intensified; walls seemed vibrate under assault causing everyone to flinch instinctively. Then silence – absolute and deafening before sudden explosion sent debris flying through air followed by guttural roar echoing down halls like thunderclap announcing storm's arrival.
It was coming.

Ada grabbed flashlight from belt, clicking it on despite knowing light would do little against whatever horrors awaited them beyond barricade. She stood up slowly facing door ready to confront unseen foe head-on.

"Stay here," she ordered others who looked back at her with mixture of fear and disbelief.
You can't face this alone!

"I have no choice." Ada's voice brooked zero argument as resolve hardened within eyes reflecting determination born from desperation. "I won’t let it take anyone else."

She stepped forward towards door, heart pounding wildly against ribs – each beat resonating through body like drumroll heralding inevitable doom.
Here goes nothing...

Ada pushed open heavy metal barrier revealing scene straight out of twisted nightmare: lab reduced to chaos; equipment smashed beyond recognition scattered across floor amidst pools congealing blood. And there it was, looming large against far wall – monstrosity defying comprehension.

It stood tall on two legs resembling grotesque parody human form but ended any resemblance at neck where instead bulbous mass pulsed rhythmically oozing slime onto ground below forming intricate patterns reminiscent coral reefs underwater.
What is that thing?

Eyes stared back unblinking – clusters of black orbs floating within gelatinous sac suspended beneath overhanging ledge serving as creature's 'head'. No pupils, no whites; just endless void swallowing all light cast upon them.

Ada raised flashlight beam directly onto monstrosity expecting it to recoil from sudden illumination yet instead thing merely tilted slightly allowing more of its form come into view revealing rows razor-sharp teeth lining maw gaping wide open dripping viscous fluid.
It's... smiling.

"Stay back!" Ada warned, voice barely audible over pounding blood rushing ears. "I won't let you hurt anyone else."

Creature responded by taking step forward – slow deliberate movement sending shockwave through floorboards beneath feet causing them to tremble violently as if warning of impending doom.
Too late for that.

Ada brandished flashlight like weapon ready strike should abominable thing advance further but knew deep down futility such action held against something so far beyond human understanding let alone capability combat.

"You're not real," she whispered desperately clinging onto last shreds sanity. "You can't be."

Monstrosity tilted head slightly, orbs swirling within sac as if studying her intently before speaking – voice resonating deep inside chest cavity like distant thunder rumble.
"Real enough to kill you all." Its mouth moved but words echoed directly into mind bypassing need for ears altogether.

Ada staggered back shocked by sudden invasion privacy; violation felt far worse than any physical assault could ever inflict. She stumbled over debris littered floor, losing grip on flashlight which clattered away disappearing beneath overturn table.
No!

Darkness enveloped her now save faint glow emanating from creature itself – pulsations casting eerie shadows dancing macabre ballet across walls surrounding them both.

"Who are you?" Ada demanded defiantly despite terror gripping heart in vice-like hold. "What do want?"

Thing took another step closer, tendrils writhing beneath surface of its bulbous form as if tasting air around her – sensing fear permeating every fiber being.
"We have come," it intoned solemnly voice echoing through observatory like funeral dirge heralded end times themselves approached. "To claim what is ours."

Ada shook head vehement denial despite knowing futility such action held against forces aligned array before them now: cosmic entities descending upon Earth intent claiming dominion over helpless humans cowering beneath their gaze.
"No," she whispered hoarsely, tears streaming down cheeks unchecked – grief mingling with terror into potent cocktail threatening overwhelm senses entirely. "You can't have it."

Creature loomed larger still until mere inches separated them; heat radiating off its body scorched skin despite cold sweat beading forehead and upper lip.
"Too late," thing whispered back, tendrils reaching out caress her face gently almost lovingly before tightening around neck constricting airflow instantly.

Ada gasped desperately clawing at appendages now squeezing life from lungs but found no purchase against slick surface – instead fingers slipped off leaving trails blood smeared across flesh pulsating with alien energy.
Can't... breathe!

Darkness closed in edges of vision as oxygen deprivation took hold; world shrank down until only monstrosity remained visible amidst encroaching black void threatening consume her whole.

"Please..." she begged one last time, voice barely audible above wheezing breaths escaping lips turning blue from lack air. "Don't let it end like this..."

Thing leaned closer still so close Ada could see individual orbs swirling within sac – each containing entire galaxies spinning madly out control.
"It has already begun," creature whispered before plunging tendrils deep into her skull.

Pain exploded behind eyes blinding white hot agony unlike anything ever experienced; mind shattered under onslaught alien consciousness invading every thought process, corrupting memories until nothing remained but twisted reflections reality warped beyond recognition. Then darkness claimed Ada completely as she slumped lifeless onto cold hard floor beneath looming form cosmic horror now fully entwined with her very essence.

Back in makeshift barricade Tom looked up suddenly from radio receiver eyes wide open staring blankly ahead.
"Tom?" Dr Chen asked concerned, noticing sudden change expression on young man's face. "What is it?"

He turned towards them slowly shaking head as if emerging trance before speaking softly:
"It was her... Ada."
"What do you mean? What happened?"
"I don't know," Tom replied truthfully tears welling up in eyes reflecting horror witnessed through other person mind – one now forever lost amidst cosmic abyss. "She's gone."

Dr Chen nodded solemnly understanding implications such words held; knew there could be no rescue mission launched under current circumstances given unknown threats lurking within observatory walls.
"We need leave," she said finally breaking silence once more, voice heavy with resignation born from realization they were truly alone now against forces beyond comprehension. "Before it comes for us too."

Together group rose silently gathering what few belongings remained scattered amidst wreckage before making their way cautiously towards exit – each step echoing through halls like death knell heralded end humanity itself.

As last person stepped out into night air behind them heavy metal door slammed shut sealing off observatory from world outside leaving only silence punctuated distant hum pulsating rhythmically beneath ground level hint at horrors yet to come.

"Fragments of Forgotten Dreams" is a haunting collection of short stories that delves into the darkest corners of the Cthulhu Mythos. Each tale stands as a fractured piece of a greater cosmic horror, offering glimpses into various times, places, and dimensions where humanity confronts the unfathomable.
In one story, a Victorian archaeologist unearths ancient tablets in the Egyptian desert, only to discover that some hieroglyphs are better left unread. Another follows a modern-day deep-sea researcher who encounters something ancient stirring in the Mariana Trench. A tale set in 1920s New Orleans reveals how jazz melodies can sometimes harmonize with otherworldly frequencies, while a story in contemporary Tokyo shows how digital technology might accidentally open doors to dimensions beyond human comprehension.
The collection explores themes of forbidden knowledge, inherited nightmares, and the fragile nature of human sanity when faced with cosmic truth. Like fragments of a shattered mirror, each story reflects a different facet of humanity's insignificance in an infinite, indifferent universe. The narratives interweave subtle references to the Great Old Ones, creating an underlying connection that suggests all these seemingly separate nightmares might be pieces of one vast, incomprehensible dream.
