Amelia cradled Henry's unconscious form, his face pale and bloodied from where that... thing had struck him earlier in Maria’s lab now bandaged clumsily with torn strips off her shirt.
"Come on," she whispered urgently shaking him gently. "We need to get out of here."

Henry groaned softly but didn't wake up; Amelia felt panic rising within chest like bile threatening eruption at any moment.

Suddenly, a low rumble echoed through observatory walls—something massive moving beneath them causing floor tremors that sent shivers down spine.
"What was THAT?" She gasped aloud though knew no one could answer her question save perhaps the very entity responsible for such chaos outside their reach now sealed within lower level lab alongside Maria's still form.

She looked around desperately searching any means of escape besides stairwell leading back up towards surface where more horrors awaited them undoubtedly. Her eyes fell upon maintenance shaft tucked away behind heavy metal door at far end corridor—it was risky but better than sitting here waiting for whatever lurked below to find its way upstairs again!

With renewed determination, Amelia hoisted Henry over shoulder grunting under his weight before staggering towards said doorway pushing against it with all remaining strength until finally giving way revealing narrow tunnel leading downwards into darkness.

She switched on flashlight attached belt illuminating path ahead barely visible amidst shadows cast by flickering emergency lights still functional despite power outage gripping entire facility. Each step echoed ominously off cold metal walls closing in around them as they descended deeper underground; air grew colder heavier with each breath drawn through lungs burning from exertion.

"Amelia..." Henry's voice cracked weakly behind her, barely audible over pounding heart echoing inside skull like a drumbeat counting down final seconds before inevitable doom. "What... what happened?"

She glanced back briefly seeing him stir slightly against shoulder trying to focus eyes on surroundings.
"We're under attack," she said simply avoiding details best left unknown until absolutely necessary.

Henry groaned again, head lolling forward onto chest once more succumbing unconsciousness leaving Amelia alone with thoughts racing wildly through mind attempting make sense of current situation—an impossible task given sheer magnitude cosmic horror unfolding around them defying all logic reason humanity had built upon over centuries exploring universe beyond Earth's atmosphere believing itself master domain.

As they reached bottom level, maintenance shaft opened into vast cavernous space filled row after row humming servers keeping Observatory Hill operational. Amelia laid Henry down gently onto concrete floor before turning attention towards finding alternative exit route; there must be another way out besides main stairwell surely guarded now by whatever monstrosity had taken residence within lower levels.

She moved cautiously through maze-like corridors lined with blinking lights, cables snaking along ceiling like veins pulsating life into lifeless machines humming softly around her. Each step echoed louder than last sending shivers down spine as if announcing arrival unwanted guest ready pounce unsuspecting prey lurking nearby shadows cast by flickering emergency lighting.

Suddenly a noise stopped Amelia dead in tracks—wet slithering sound accompanied heavy breathing that didn't belong here amidst sterile environment designed house delicate scientific equipment. She froze, listening intently trying pinpoint exact location source when suddenly it moved again closer this time sending wave fear crashing over body causing muscles tense preparing flee or fight whichever option presented itself first.

"Who's there?" Amelia called out voice barely above whisper despite knowing full well who—or rather what—she'd encounter should continue down path chosen. No response came except more slithering sounds growing louder now accompanied by faint clicking noises like claws tapping against metal grates beneath feet of unseen creature stalking her every move.

She backed away slowly until pressed firmly back into corner unable move further without stepping over Henry's prone form still unconscious behind nearby server rack providing scant protection from whatever horrors awaited beyond reach flashlight beam barely piercing darkness encroaching around them. Heart pounded wildly against ribcage threatening burst free at any moment as Amelia braced herself for inevitable confrontation with cosmic entity determined consume all life within observatory walls.

Then, without warning it emerged—tentacles writhing mass pulsating sickening rhythm blocking only exit available now standing between her and safety above ground. Its form defied description; no known species could account such monstrosity looming menacingly before Amelia ready devour everything in its path including herself should she fail resist urges flee screaming into night.

"Stay back!" She shouted brandishing flashlight like weapon though knew pathetic defense against power overwhelming force bearing down upon her. "I won't let you hurt anyone else!"

The creature paused briefly, eyes glowing brighter within darkness before letting out low guttural growl resonating deep inside chest cavity sending shivers coursing through body threatening collapse under sheer terror gripping soul.

Amelia steeled herself preparing fight back against impossible odds when suddenly—

"Dr. Sterling?" A weak voice called from behind server rack where Henry lay hidden moments earlier now visible once more amidst shadows cast by flickering lights overhead.
"It's... it’s me, Maria."

Relief washed over Amelia like cool water on parched skin hearing colleague alive despite believing otherwise after witnessing carnage left in wake of creature rampaging through lower level labs. She turned towards sound voice barely able to contain joy surging within chest momentarily forgetting danger lurking mere feet away.

"Maria!" she exclaimed rushing forward only for tentacles lash out striking Amelia across face sending her crashing against nearby console with sickening thud leaving world spinning around edges vision blurring into darkness threatening consume consciousness entirely. "No..." She groaned weakly trying push herself back up onto unsteady legs while wiping blood from split lip courtesy impact.

"Amelia!" Maria cried rushing towards fallen friend despite knowing better than expose self further danger lurking nearby yet unable resist urge protect fellow human being amidst chaos surrounding them all.
"It's okay," Amelia whispered hoarsely through clenched teeth forcing smile reassure colleague even as pain radiated throughout body threatening overwhelm senses. "I'm fine... we just need to get out of here."

Maria nodded helping her stand upright once more before turning attention towards monstrosity blocking their path still writhing mass pulsating sickening rhythm awaiting opportunity strike again.

"What is that thing?" Maria asked voice barely above whisper staring wide-eyed at abomination defying all laws nature humanity had ever encountered exploring cosmos beyond Earth's atmosphere believing itself master domain now reduced mere prey before overwhelming force cosmic horror unleashed upon unsuspecting world below.
"I don't know," Amelia admitted grimly shaking head slowly side-to-side while rubbing temples with trembling fingers. "But whatever it is—it’s not natural."

They stood there frozen in place staring at creature blocking only exit available now standing between them and safety above ground, hearts pounding wildly against ribcages threatening burst free any moment as fear gripped souls tightly refusing let go despite desperate need flee screaming into night.

Then suddenly Henry stirred behind server rack where he'd been lying unconscious moments earlier—his groans of pain breaking spell held over trio by sheer terror gripping their minds preventing action necessary escape certain doom looming ever closer with each passing second ticking away precious time remaining before inevitable confrontation occurred between humanity and cosmic horror determined consume all life within observatory walls.

"Henry!" Amelia cried rushing towards him despite knowing better than expose self further danger lurking nearby yet unable resist urge protect fellow human being amidst chaos surrounding them. "Are you okay?"

He looked up at her through bleary eyes struggling focus on surroundings before nodding weakly.
"I think so," he rasped voice hoarse from exertion unconsciousness.

Amelia helped him stand upright once more alongside Maria now forming united front against monstrosity blocking their path ready devour everything in its way including themselves should they fail resist urges flee screaming into night. Together, three colleagues faced cosmic horror defying all logic reason humanity had built upon over centuries exploring universe beyond Earth's atmosphere believing itself master domain—now reduced mere prey before overwhelming force unleashed upon unsuspecting world below.

"We need to work together," Amelia said firmly looking from one face another searching for any sign doubt fear threatening overwhelm senses. "That thing won't stop until it has consumed us all."

Maria and Henry nodded solemnly understanding gravity situation they found themselves trapped within observatory walls surrounded by cosmic horror defying every known law physics biology humanity had ever encountered exploring cosmos beyond Earth's atmosphere believing itself master domain now reduced mere prey before overwhelming force unleashed upon unsuspecting world below.

"Alright," Amelia continued taking deep breath steel herself for what lay ahead. "We'll need to create a distraction—something that will draw its attention away from us long enough escape."

Henry looked around desperately searching anything useful amidst sterile environment designed house delicate scientific equipment before spotting large tank filled liquid nitrogen stored nearby server racks keeping sensitive hardware operational optimal temperatures.

"There!" he exclaimed pointing towards target. "If we can tip it over, the contents should spill out freezing everything in its path including that... thing."

Amelia nodded approvingly at plan formulated colleague despite knowing full well dangers involved attempting such maneuver amidst chaos surrounding them all.
"Good thinking," she said turning attention back toward monstrosity blocking their exit still writhing mass pulsating sickening rhythm awaiting opportunity strike again. "Maria, you stay here with Henry—keep him safe while I create distraction."

Before either could protest Amelia moved swiftly towards tank filled liquid nitrogen stored nearby server racks ready tip over contents freezing everything in its path including cosmic horror determined consume all life within observatory walls.

As she approached target creature sensing presence shifted focus away from Maria and Henry now huddled together behind makeshift barrier formed upturned tables chairs providing scant protection against overwhelming force bearing down upon them. Its tentacles lashed out striking Amelia across back sending her crashing onto cold concrete floor with sickening thud leaving world spinning around edges vision blurring into darkness threatening consume consciousness entirely.

"Amelia!" Maria screamed rushing forward despite knowing better than expose self further danger lurking nearby yet unable resist urge protect fellow human being amidst chaos surrounding them all. "No!"

She reached fallen friend just as tentacles lashed out again striking her across chest knocking wind from lungs sending both women crashing against wall behind with force enough shatter plasterboard revealing underlying framework supporting observatory walls above.

"Maria!" Henry cried rushing towards colleague now lying motionless beside Amelia struggling regain consciousness amidst carnage surrounding them all. "Please... don't leave me too."

Tears streamed down his face as he cradled her head gently in lap rocking back-and-forth helplessly watching life drain away from eyes once filled with warmth laughter reduced mere shells reflecting horrors witnessed within observatory walls now consumed by cosmic horror defying every known law physics biology humanity had ever encountered exploring cosmos beyond Earth's atmosphere believing itself master domain—now reduced prey before overwhelming force unleashed upon unsuspecting world below.

Suddenly Amelia stirred beside him groaning softly through clenched teeth forcing herself back up onto unsteady legs despite pain radiating throughout body threatening overwhelm senses. She looked around desperately searching anything useful amidst chaos surrounding them all until spotting large tank filled liquid nitrogen stored nearby server racks ready tip over contents freezing everything in its path including cosmic horror determined consume all life within observatory walls.

"Henry," she rasped voice hoarse from exertion unconsciousness, "we need to... we have a plan."

He looked up at her through bleary eyes struggling focus on surroundings before nodding weakly understanding gravity situation they found themselves trapped within observactory walls surrounded by cosmic horror defying every known law physics biology humanity had ever encountered exploring cosmos beyond Earth's atmosphere believing itself master domain—now reduced mere prey before overwhelming force unleashed upon unsuspecting world below.

As they approached target creature sensing presence shifted focus away from Maria now lying motionless beside fallen friend providing scant protection against overwhelming force bearing down upon them.

Its tentacles lashed out striking Amelia across face sending her crashing onto cold concrete floor with fresh gash oozing blood mixing together other wounds sustained earlier during confrontation. Henry cried out in anguish seeing colleague suffer further injuries amidst carnage surrounding him but steeled himself for task ahead knowing failure meant certain doom looming ever closer.

With renewed determination, he grabbed hold tank's edge bracing feet against floor began pushing with all his might until finally tipping over contents spilled forth freezing everything within immediate vicinity including cosmic horror determined consume every living thing trapped inside observatory walls now consumed by its insatiable hunger for destruction chaos.

"Fragments of Forgotten Dreams" is a haunting collection of short stories that delves into the darkest corners of the Cthulhu Mythos. Each tale stands as a fractured piece of a greater cosmic horror, offering glimpses into various times, places, and dimensions where humanity confronts the unfathomable.
In one story, a Victorian archaeologist unearths ancient tablets in the Egyptian desert, only to discover that some hieroglyphs are better left unread. Another follows a modern-day deep-sea researcher who encounters something ancient stirring in the Mariana Trench. A tale set in 1920s New Orleans reveals how jazz melodies can sometimes harmonize with otherworldly frequencies, while a story in contemporary Tokyo shows how digital technology might accidentally open doors to dimensions beyond human comprehension.
The collection explores themes of forbidden knowledge, inherited nightmares, and the fragile nature of human sanity when faced with cosmic truth. Like fragments of a shattered mirror, each story reflects a different facet of humanity's insignificance in an infinite, indifferent universe. The narratives interweave subtle references to the Great Old Ones, creating an underlying connection that suggests all these seemingly separate nightmares might be pieces of one vast, incomprehensible dream.
