I got to the station by 4:05am. I was about to celebrate when I found Kaito there already.

Me: Hey!

Kaito: It's called, 'Setting a fine example.'

Me: ...

Kaito: Meaning you have to fulfill your side of the promise.

Me: What promise?

Kaito: Don't play dumb with me Zayla.

Me: Oh... (happy) That I will go with you to another mission today?

Kaito: No. That you are staying here and keeping watch.

Me: ...

Kaito: Your words.

Me: You made me say that!

Kaito: Don't lie!

Early in the morning - by 7, there was already an emergency and Kaito and the team dashed out, leaving me behind.

Kaito: Bye.

Me: ... Bye.

They got into the truck and drove away.

Kaito's POV

After waving at Zayla, we went out of the station. Xander was seated with me in the front.

Xander: The rookie not coming along today?

Me: She did that to herself.

Xander: Ooh... what did she do?

Me: (smiling) She made a promise to come early to the station before me but she lost.

Xander: Poor girl. She didn't know what she was up against.

Me: Hey. When she made that, she knew exactly.

Xander: OK. But jokes aside. How is she? Is she coping?

Me: More than you can imagine. She is hoping to join the ranks in a month's time.

Xander: That's nice.

Me: But how sure can we be that she will stick around until the end? Most rookies dropped out once the heat increased.

Xander: Trust her. Besides, she is not like the others that you have taught. She will stick around and you will be surprised.

Me: 50 dollars.

Xander: 100 dollars.

Me: That's a bit too much, don't you think?

Xander: 150.

Me: ...Fine.

Being in the station alone felt awful. I missed being in the truck and teasing Kaito. I wonder if the mission was going well? Were there any injuries?

I was in my own world until Mr. Takashi saw me.

Takashi: Zayla? What are you doing here by yourself? Is it Kaito again?

Me: Mr. Takashi! Not at all! I took myself out for today. Kaito didn't do anything.

Takashi: Oh, are you planning to drop out?

Me: Not at all... I kind of sold myself out, but that's okay! I am learning the ins and outs of the station.

Takashi: That's good. Well, when Kaito is back, would you mind giving him this?

He handed me an enveloped letter. I took it and placed it in front of me.

Me: I will do so sir.

Takashi: Great. Thank you.

With that he walked away. Back to my world again, I then imagined how it would be like if I was part of the team as well.

Kaito: I hope you are not daydreaming again.

Kaito flicked my forehead.

Me: Oh? You are back?

Xander: Yeah. The mission went well.

Sharla: As always.

Sharla was another girl in the team. We never talked, so I couldn't say I knew her that well.

Me: Well, that's nice.

I then remembered Mr. Takashi's letter for Kaito.

Me: Oh! (To Kaito) A letter from Mr. Takashi.

Xander: Uh Oh. What is it going to be this time?

Me: Hey, Xander. I am sure it's not that bad.

Xander: Coming from you, yeah.

Me: ...

Kaito however, was not happy. As if he knew what was in it.

Kaito: Thanks Zayla.

Kaito put the letter in his locker.

Xander: Aren't you going to read it?

Sharla and I spoke in unison, that the other guys laughed.

Sharla and I: That's confidential.

Xander: Kaito is my best bud. He can tell me anything.

I shook my head as I spinned around in the chair.

I wondered what the letter contained that Kaito disliked so much...
