Terrible Secrets

Chapter Thirteen

Chapter Thirteen

Jan 23, 2025

We heard a sound. It was a woman's voice. As she came into view we saw her curly brown hair and freckled face.
“My goodness children, what are you doing here alone, where are your parents? It's almost dark, "the woman asked, sounding worried.
“Oh, we don't, were orphaned we don't have any parents” I responded and felt a tinge of sadness, I hadn't thought about my parents in a long time,
“I’m very sorry to hear that, but you girls might be in luck, I run a children's home a few miles away from here, you two could stay with us there, if you would just come with me,” She told us, and we agreed
We walked a short way to a coach yard and got in a coach to bring us there, Once we got off the woman asked me a few questions as Elizabeth had fallen asleep,
“What are you two named?” the woman asked me
“My name is Cassandra Carlton, ma’am. This is my sister, Elizabeth Carlton” I responded,
“Thank you, you’ll call me Miss Seymour,” she informed us.
After telling her our ages and birth dates she permitted me to wake up Elizabeth and get reddy for supper, as we were able to stay
A hot meal was wonderful as we hadn't eaten in a good while and we were never fed this quality of food at Missus Harris’s. Then at eight at night we were told to go dress in our sleepwear an go to a vacant room and sleep, We hadn't slept in a proper bed for ages so by golly we slept through the night, we awoke some time around six in the morning we went downstairs for breakfast at around an hour later which was also warm as opposed to our usual expectations.
Our schedule is nicer than Missus Harris’s strict one, it goes something like this.
We would wake up at six in the morning, and we would dress for the day or shower until we ate breakfast, which consisted of eggs, toast, or pancakes. We had lessons on weekdays from a bit after breakfast to maybe three in the afternoon, with a lunch break at noon. After that we could really do anything we wanted, in the warmer months, April to September usually, we would play in the yard or the gardens, and in the colder months, October to March, we would usually sit inside, or go outside but very bundled up. Miss Seymour really didn't want us to catch fever out there, she was right, I guess. After that we ate dinner. After dinner we had more free time and then dressed in night clothes and went to sleep.

Cassandra Carlton is an orphan, but her orphanage has a secret, a dark, dark secret. Her and her sister Elizabeth were waiting to be adopted like any other children would be, but Elizabeth found a key. That simple key opened a lock to a door that hid information so obscure, so unforeseen, that none of them would ever have predicted it.
