Embers of the Heart

Under the rain

Under the rain

Jan 25, 2025

They walked in silence, the air thick with unspoken words and lingering tension. The sky grew darker, and soon, rain began to fall, a steady drizzle that quickly soaked through their clothes. Each drop was like a tiny hammer, relentlessly beating against their skin.

The sound of raindrops hitting the ground filled the void between them, but it did little to ease the awkwardness. The droplets danced on the pavement, creating small splashes that added to the cacophony of nature's symphony.

Leo's eyes remained fixed on Kai's back as they trudged forward. He couldn't shake the words Kai had shouted earlier. "I watched everyone die, and it was my fault." The weight of those words hung heavily in the air, suffocating Leo with guilt and sadness.

As they continued through the rain, Leo's curiosity and frustration grew. He wanted to understand Kai, to know more about the man who had saved his life despite his cold exterior. The silence was unbearable, and Leo knew he had to try and break through the wall Kai had built around himself.

Taking a deep breath, Leo decided to push a little, hoping that Kai might finally open up. "You know," he began, his voice hesitant, "what you said earlier... it won't leave my mind."

Kai didn't respond, his steps steady and unchanging. Leo pressed on, determined to get something, anything, from him. "I get that you don't want to talk about it, but I can't help but wonder. What really happened? How did it all go down?"

Kai's pace slowed slightly, a sign that he had heard Leo's questions. The rain continued to fall, creating a curtain of water that blurred the world around them. Leo felt a mixture of anticipation and anxiety as he waited for Kai's response; unsure if he would finally reveal the truth or continue to keep it buried within himself. The rain seemed to mirror the emotions swirling inside Leo, a mix of hope and fear that threatened to consume him whole.

Kai's voice was weary as he finally spoke, filled with a low tone that Leo hadn't heard before. He seemed guarded, not wanting to delve into the past and leave it there. "It's not something I like to talk about," he admitted.

Leo felt his frustration rising, but he kept his voice calm. "I understand that, but... maybe talking about it could bring some clarity. We're both in this together, and understanding each other might make things easier."

For a moment, Kai didn't respond, only sighing softly as the sound of rain drowned out his words. "Do you really think understanding makes a difference?" he asked skeptically. "This world doesn't care about our stories or our pasts. Survival is all that matters."

Leo nodded, even though Kai couldn't see him. "Maybe so. But it matters to me. Knowing who I'm fighting alongside matters. And maybe it matters to you more than you realize."

The patter of rain continued, and the silence dragged on once again. But this time, there was a hint of something shifting, a tiny crack in the barrier Kai had built around himself. Whether or not he would let Leo in remained to be seen, but for now, knowing he had been heard was enough.

Kai grew quiet and shook his head in response. The rain beat down harder, creating a rhythm that mirrored the unresolved tension between them.

After a long pause, Leo could take it no longer. "What's the plan?" he asked bluntly, trying to break through the barrier of silence.

Kai sighed deeply, sounding both frustrated and resigned. "You ask too many questions," he muttered under his breath. But after a moment of hesitation, he finally answered. "I'm searching for something... something that most think is just a myth. But I believe it's real."

Leo's curiosity was instantly piqued by Kai's mysterious statement. His voice softened, becoming more cautious as he probed for more information.

"What is it?" Leo asked, his eyes fixed on Kai.

"A community of survivors that have managed to rebuild and thrive," Kai replied, his voice infused with a mix of hope and determination. "It's a long shot, but it's our best chance at finding safety."

The words hung in the air between them, mingling with the persistent rain that continued to pour down. A spark of hope ignited within Leo at the thought of a place where people were living and thriving despite the chaos and destruction around them. For the first time since their journey began, he felt like they were walking toward something rather than just running away.

Leo couldn't help but wonder if this was the reason why Kai had insisted on him sticking around after saving him the first time. There was a hint of both curiosity and frustration in his tone as he asked, "Is that why you wanted me to stay with you?"

Kai paused, his unreadable gaze meeting Leo's. "Believe whatever helps you sleep at night," he said, his tone flat. "I only want you around for my own gain."

A pang of hurt shot through Leo at those words. He couldn't understand why Kai would say something like that. "What's your gain?" he asked, his voice barely audible over the sound of rain.

But Kai remained silent, leaving the weight of the question hanging in the air between them. Without another word, he turned and continued walking, leaving Leo to ponder the enigma that was Kai and his true motives for keeping him by his side.

Leo does indeed ask to many questions. Personally, I don’t feel like he’s owed an explanation after getting his life saved…but this maybe because I’m friends with people who are very private/introverted who have hard lines. At large, I still don’t think anyone’s entitled to hear another’s story/trauma, especially if there’s no rapport. I think Leo’s coming on really strong too soon🫣
