Third Loop, Chapter 14 : 残された絆 (The Bonds That Remain) part 2

Jan 29, 2025

The group advanced carefully through the dim corridors of the alien ship, their footsteps eerily muted against the smooth metallic floor. The flickering lights overhead cast their shadows in strange, distorted shapes, as though the ship itself was alive and watching them. A faint hum of power reverberated through the walls, growing louder as they moved deeper into the vessel. Every sound—every creak of metal, every hiss of machinery—made Izumi flinch.

Daichi glanced back at her. "You okay?" he asked quietly, his voice barely audible over the ambient hum.

Izumi nodded, though her grip on her flashlight was tight enough to turn her knuckles white. "I'm fine," she lied. Her voice trembled just enough for Daichi to catch it.

He stopped, waiting for her to catch up. When she was close enough, he lowered his voice. "If you're scared, it's okay. I think we're all feeling it."

Izumi met his gaze, and for a moment, the overwhelming tension eased. "Thanks, Daichi," she murmured. "But I'll manage. I have to."

Ahead of them, Ayase called out, her voice cutting through the stillness. "Found something."

The group hurried forward, their flashlights converging on what appeared to be a large, reinforced door. The alien symbols etched into its surface glowed faintly, pulsing in rhythm with the hum of the ship. Beyond the door, the corridor opened into a massive chamber.

As they stepped inside, the control room revealed itself—a cavernous space filled with shattered consoles, darkened monitors, and broken holographic displays. The smell of scorched metal and ozone lingered in the air. It was a scene of chaos, as if the room had borne witness to a desperate struggle.

But amidst the destruction, one console still flickered with life. Its screen glowed faintly, the alien text scrolling across it in bursts of erratic movement.

Hikari immediately made her way to the terminal, her eyes lighting up with a mix of excitement and apprehension. "Finally," she murmured, her voice trembling with the thrill of discovery. She pulled a small device from her pocket and connected it to the console, her fingers flying across the keyboard as streams of alien data flooded the screen.

"Hikari?" Ayase stepped closer, her tone cautious. "What's on it? Can you understand any of this?"

Hikari didn't look up, her brow furrowed in concentration. "I can… mostly. It's unlike anything I've ever seen, but the ship's systems are surprisingly intuitive. Give me a moment."

Izumi stood back, watching Hikari work. Her heart pounded as she glanced at Daichi, who was surveying the room with a grim expression. "What do you think we'll find here?" she asked softly.

Daichi didn't answer immediately. "Answers," he said at last. "Whether we want them or not."

The glow from the console illuminated Hikari's face as she leaned closer, muttering under her breath. The alien text continued to scroll, forming patterns that Izumi couldn't begin to comprehend. Finally, Hikari's fingers froze, and her eyes widened.

"What is it?" Izumi asked, her voice tight with anticipation.

Hikari leaned back in her chair, her face pale. For a moment, she said nothing, her lips pressing into a thin line as if weighing how much to say.

"Hikari," Ayase pressed, her voice sharp. "Spit it out."

"This ship…" Hikari began, her voice trembling slightly. "It wasn't just an ordinary vessel. It was a containment vessel."

Izumi's stomach sank. "Containment for what?"

Hikari hesitated, her fingers twitching as she gestured toward the screen. "A creature. According to these logs, it's something capable of manipulating time and space itself. They were doing some experimental project on it, but it failed."

Ayase's eyes narrowed, her hand instinctively gripping her weapon. "You're saying this thing escaped?"

Hikari nodded, swallowing hard. "Whatever it is, it broke free and tore this ship apart."

Daichi stepped forward, his jaw clenched. "If it broke free after the crash…"

"…then it could still be out there," Izumi finished, her voice barely above a whisper. Her mind raced with the implications. "If it has the ability to manipulate time and space, then… it could be responsible for the Vanishing."

The room fell into a stunned silence, the weight of the revelation settling heavily over them. Izumi wrapped her arms around herself, a chill creeping up her spine that had nothing to do with the cold air.

"Are you sure?" Ayase asked, her voice uncharacteristically quiet. For all her strength, even she seemed shaken. "About what this thing can do?"

Hikari nodded slowly, her gaze fixed on the console. "The logs are clear. This creature… it's beyond anything we've ever encountered. It's not just powerful—it's dangerous. It doesn't just bend the laws of physics. It breaks them."

Daichi's expression darkened, his eyes flickering with a mixture of fear and resolve. "If it's still out there, then it's a threat to everything. We need to find it."

Izumi stared at him, her heart pounding. "Daichi… what if we can't stop it?" Her voice cracked, and she hated how small she sounded. "What if it's too late?"

He turned to her, his gaze steady. "It's not too late. It can't be. We've come this far—we're not giving up now."

"But how?" Izumi's voice rose, her fear spilling over. "How do we fight something that can manipulate time and space? How do we even begin to understand it?"

"We don't have to understand it," Ayase said firmly, stepping beside them. Her voice was like steel, cutting through the tension. "We just have to stop it. Whatever it takes."

Izumi's throat tightened, tears threatening to spill. For months, they had fought against an unseen enemy, grasping at straws for answers. And now, faced with the truth, it felt like the world was slipping further out of their reach.

Hikari placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. "We'll figure it out," she said softly. "Together."

Daichi nodded, his gaze unwavering. "We'll face this—whatever it is. And we'll win. We have to."

The faint hum of the ship's systems seemed to grow louder, as if mocking their resolve. Izumi closed her eyes, forcing herself to take a steadying breath. When she opened them again, her fear hadn't disappeared, but it was tempered by something stronger.

Hope.

"All right," she said, her voice quiet but firm. "Let's find this thing. Before it's too late."

I woke up in a world that shouldn’t exist. And in a body that isn’t mine.

The city around me is in ruins—silent streets, broken buildings, a sky that no longer remembers the sun. I don’t know how I got here. I don’t know who I am. My memories slip through my fingers like sand, leaving behind only fragments—whispers of a promise I can’t remember making.

But something is wrong. The world feels… stuck, repeating itself like a broken record. Shadows move where they shouldn’t. Time bends in ways I can’t explain. And the deeper I search for answers, the clearer it becomes—this isn’t just about me.

There’s something out there, buried in the loops of time. Watching. Waiting.

If I break free, will I find the truth? Or will I disappear like everything else?

When the stars grant a wish, what do they take in return?
