Angel from Hell

Invisible Cages

Invisible Cages

Jan 29, 2025

The sun had set over Saint Petersburg, leaving the sky painted in hues of orange and gold, hesitating before surrendering to the dark. The city exhaled into the night, its antique streetlights casting ghostly shadows across the quiet streets.

Inside Dmitri's apartment, silence enveloped the space, punctuated only by Irina's uneven breaths. She sat on the leather sofa, clutching a blanket around her slender frame, her eyes darting to every corner of the room as if searching for an escape.

The room was expansive yet suffocating. The dark wallpaper and heavy, classic furniture asserted their dominance over the space. A fireplace flickered in the corner, radiating a soft warmth, though Irina felt a chill deep within her that no fire could thaw. The table before her bore the remnants of an untouched dinner: a half-filled wine glass and an empty bottle beside it.

Her mind raced, retracing the steps that had led her here, to this man. "How did I get here? How did I become a prisoner of his words and his gaze?"

Irina (to herself):
"Every word he says feels like a promise, but behind it hides a threat. How do I confront someone who makes me feel like I'm breathing and suffocating at the same time?"

The silence was broken by the heavy sound of Dmitri's footsteps as he entered the room. He wore a white shirt, unbuttoned at the collar, and dark trousers that emphasized his tall frame. His piercing eyes gleamed with an unplaceable intensity as he poured himself a glass of wine, never breaking eye contact with her.

Dmitri (calmly): "You look troubled, Irina. Are you alright?"

His voice was soft, yet it carried a subtle undercurrent of menace.

Irina (hesitantly): "I just... I need some time to think."

Dmitri smiled, but it was far from comforting—it was the smile of a predator watching its prey.

Dmitri: "Sometimes, thinking can be your enemy. Sometimes, it's better to trust things as they are. Why do you always need answers?"

The tension between them was palpable, like a taut string ready to snap. Dmitri's eyes bore into her, seeking any trace of defiance or hesitation within her. She felt as though she were under a magnifying glass, unable to hide anything.

Irina (with newfound boldness):."Because I need to understand. Understand you. Understand what you want from me."

Dmitri suddenly stood and walked toward her with slow, deliberate steps. He sat beside her on the sofa, taking her hand gently yet firmly enough to convey his control.

Dmitri (softly): "What I want is very simple, Irina. I want you. Only you."

A shiver ran through her body. His words were a double-edged sword, offering comfort and instilling fear in equal measure. She tried to pull her hand away, but he held it lightly, just enough to make her feel powerless.

Dmitri: "You still don't understand, do you? I'm not asking you to stay here. I'm ensuring you will."

Irina (voice trembling): "And is that what love means to you? A love that possesses, that offers no freedom?"

Dmitri smiled again, but he didn't respond immediately. He simply gazed at her for a long moment before speaking softly.

Dmitri: "Love, my dear, is the most beautiful cage of all."

The crackling fire in the hearth filled the room with a soft murmur, while the flickering flames cast a shifting play of light and shadow across Dmitri's face, which seemed carved from both darkness and light. Everything around them screamed warmth, yet her heart trembled under the icy fear his presence cultivated.

"I love you, I love you, I love you
I love you, I love you, I love you
I love you, I love you, I love you...
You are my angel
Come from a distant Heaven
I love you, I love you, I love you
I love you, I love you, I love you
I love you, I love you, I love you..."

The lyrics played like a haunting refrain in her mind, an eerie soundtrack to the strange moment. They echoed her own tangled feelings, as though they were an undeniable truth.

Suddenly, Dmitri rose, standing directly before her. He extended his hand, as if inviting her to stand.

Dmitri: "Come. There's something I want you to see."

Irina (warily): "Where?"

Dmitri (enigmatic): "You'll find out when we get there."

She hesitated, but his gaze alone was enough to compel her to rise and follow him.

She stepped into the unknown with him, her emotions a chaotic mix of fear and exhilaration. She knew whatever awaited her might change everything, yet retreating was no longer an option.

"Is this love? Or madness? Or perhaps both?"
