"Mom! I'm going to be late again, hurry up already!" I shouted from down stairs, waiting by the door.
My name is Jaye'sun Wilkins, I'm 16 African-American, and born and raised in the city of Chicago. The past few years have been a struggle, without dad being around much it's hard keeping the house together. He's always at work, talking about how important his work is, but what can be more important than family? Mom tries her hardest, but I know it's a lot of work, and trying to take care of me by herself for the most part.
After realizing it's going to be a second, I resign myself to the couch, and turn on the TV to see what's happening.
"Breaking news, another Deviant crime has occurred down by Lake Shore Drive, a family of 5 has been taken hostage, and police are currently trying to negotiate."
I sigh realizing things are never going to change around here. "They crack down on gun violence and now we have people running around playing super villains like some type of comic book"
I glance back at the TV just in time to see something amazing.
"Well, well, well we have someone trying to step in, and play hero, you know what happens to heroes" the masked villain said as he leapt forwards at the caped man sharpening his fist into a dagger.
"What is this!" The broadcaster said
Just then a man in a red, and white striped cape appears, dressed like some type of superhero. His stone-like figure gives off a sense of power unlike anything I've seen before. I've seen people try to interfere when someone with a deviation is committing a crime. But it never ends well most of the time, and most people who have the power to stop it never do well.
But this guy, he was different. He stood unyielding, showing no sign of fear.
*scene change*
The mysterious man quickly moved to the left, dodging the attack before brushing the dust off his shoulder.
"W-what, how did you dodge me" the man hissed.
“The villain appears to have a deviation known as sharp skin, he is able to manipulate any part of his body connected to his skin to make it sharper. It's what is known as a tier 4 deviation. Deviations are scaled on a 4 tier ranking, with 4 being weak, and normally nothing outstanding. While tier 1 deviations, can be used to cause wide scale disaster on a city level.” The broadcaster said while covering the scene.
The man stood there not saying a word, then it happened in a second, the caped man fist connected with the villain’s face. The punch carried heavy force, as it created a gust of wind behind him. The villain was sent flying into the ground, and was knocked unconscious.
"I don't know what happened folks, but, but IT'S OVER, THE MYSTERY MAN HAS SAVED THE DAY" The news broadcaster exclaimed.
The caped man turned and pointed at the camera, "Take this as a sign, all evil doers. There's a new order in town, and he goes by the name -" He paused for dramatic effect. "The Golden Patriot." he said in a bold voice. Before anyone noticed, he escaped the scene.
I stood there just staring at the TV, who was that man, and why does he treat this like some type of game. Can heroes be real, can the stories I once only dreamed of be real? I needed to meet this man, I needed to know if good like this really existed? I wanted to know if I could be special.
