A week has passed since that day, I had a hard time explaining what happened to my mom.
I didn’t want to tell her I had a Deviation, I mean, I don’t know how she would react. And telling her I got into a fight would probably give her a heart attack, I mean how much more stress could I put my mother through?
scene change to bedroom
I yawned as I got out of my bed, and looked over to see the clock next to my desk. It read 7:45 and I wondered why my mom didn’t wake me up like how she usually does when I oversleep.
I went and looked down the hall, but I didn’t see her. I was used to dad not being home most nights, but even when mom worked late she usually made her way home eventually, or would text me to let me know.
“Hey! Mom, where are you? Are you home?” I yelled as I rubbed my eyes, trying to get them to focus.
I still didn’t get a response, I checked her room but didn’t see her, I looked downstairs but she still wasn’t there.
I couldn’t focus on it for too long though, as I was going to be late for school, and needed to pass this test that was coming up in a week.
I wanted to send her a text but remembered I didn’t have a phone. I raced to get ready for school, since I had to catch the bus if I hoped to be anywhere close to on time.
scene change
“Hey idiot, what are you doing here?” a voice yelled from behind me.
I turned to see Bryce as he was running behind me.
He was always late for school, but I guess when you’re a genius you can afford to be huh?
“I was late so I had to take the bus, and then of course it had to break down when I was a few blocks away from the school.” I responded.
Bryce caught up with me, and placed a hand on my shoulder.
“Did you hear about that new transfer student, you know I heard she’s a girl, and a cute one at that. I know you don’t have the best record with girls, but hey she might just not know how much of a loser you are” Bryce said while laughing, and hitting me on the back.
I pushed his arm away.
“You don’t have to be such as asshole.”
“You know I’m joking man, but it would be nice for you to make some more friends. You just can’t shut yourself off from everybody forever. Eventually you gotta meet new people.” Bryce countered.
I looked away and kept walking, he was right, but he didn’t understand how hard it is talking to someone new.
We continued walking till we got in front of the school, and went separate ways.
“Uhm hey Bryce, we never really talked about that day, and why you never told me that you had a Devi-”
He cut me off.
“I promise I’ll tell you later, it’s just something that’s hard to talk about okay?, I promise though” he said as he walked off.
I walked the halls with so many questions. So much happened in one day but none of it mattered. Back in school I’m still just me, a nobody with barely any connections outside of Bryce, that’s when his words entered my head.
I entered math class and took a seat, I put my head on the desk. I really hated this class, like when will I ever use any of this in my life. I mean as long as I know that 11x11 is 111, I’m sure that I’ll be fine. I mean who couldn't do basic multiplication?
I started to doze off, and think about myself as a superhero. I was sure my parents wouldn’t approve, but the thought of being someone cool wouldn’t leave my head.
“Mr. Wilkins, how many times do I have to tell you, this isn’t nap time, it’s math class” Mr. Johnson said while shaking his head.
I shot up, and rubbed my eyes to see the whole class turn to look at me. I felt so embarrassed but that was until I noticed someone new in the front of the class.
I couldn’t place it but she had a sense of elegance to her figure, and her long green and brown hair fell over the back of the seat. She didn’t turn around nor did she laugh, she had to be new or something, I mean who wouldn’t take the chance to laugh at me.
For some reason I wanted to talk to her, I’ve never noticed her before but I wasn’t really someone known for their amazing memory.
For the rest of class I kept catching myself glancing over at her, it wasn’t for long but for some reason she intrigued me.
But what was I supposed to do? I mean I didn’t even know her name, I fell asleep so early in class I missed attendance.
I needed to talk to her, but I didn’t know how without making myself look dumb, my only friend was Bryce, and we’ve been friends since Pre-K. I mean, I don’t even remember how we became friends, we’ve always been together side by side.
The bell rang and I got up from my seat, passing by her. This way I could get a better look at her now. She had well kept locs with flower clips in front of her hair. I think she noticed me looking though because she started to say something, but I became nervous and ran out of the class. I mean, I’m sure she was just going to make fun of me like everybody else or call me some type of weirdo for looking at her.
I went through the rest of my day like always, until the final bell rang, and I went to grab my stuff out of my locker. I pulled my bookbag out of my locker, and threw it on my back, while I hurried down the hall. I was turning the last corner before I was out of the school, till I felt myself collide with someone else.
“Hey! you know you can watch where you’re going? I mean I could have gotten hurt.” an unfamiliar voice said softly.
I looked up to see the girl from math class, just my luck I thought. I just met her, and her first impression is me being a dumbass. I saw her look down, and then all of a sudden tears started to well up in her eyes.
“My flowers!, great! I just got these. I was hoping walking around with them would make someone wanna join the gardening club” She said as she bent down to try to put the dirt back in the pot.
“No, no It’s my fault” I bent down and started scooping up the dirt beside her.
Gardening club? I didn’t even know we had one of those.
“So how many members do you have? I mean, I’ve never heard of it before. I think gardening is pretty cool, we have one in my backyard. My mom likes to grow all sorts of vegetables.” I said, as I finished putting all the dirt in the pot.
“Well… I just moved here from Iowa, so it’s just me as of right now.” The girl said as she got up dusting off her brown skirt.
“Well you owe me one, so how about you stay after school, you don’t really seem like the popular type so I’m sure you’re free.” she said while laughing.
“Well that was rude… but you’re right, by the way my name is Jaye’sun.” I smiled while handing her back the messed up plant in the pot.
