Dishes clatter, silver where clinks, and the smell of fish and herbs fill the air.
Both Kiel and Archer set up the empty dining room for one last meal. Tomorrow was the day Mr. and Mrs. Winters left for their new house in Europe and Kiel and Archer started their new lives. Mr. and Mrs. Winters had already let the cook go so they made tonight’s dinner all by themselves. Mrs. Winter was actually a and really good cook though she didn’t use that ability much. Fish and herbs filled the air with even more signaling dinner would be ready soon.
Kiel and Archer wipe the table and set up plates, silver where, glasses, and napkins and place chairs at the table. Archer sighs as he pushes in the last chair and leans on the table. He looks over at Kiel who was sitting down and messing with a rag, trying to depict what kind of fabric it was. Kiel’s head turns as he senses Archer’s gaze.
“Are you watching me?” He tilts his head.
Archer chuckles and walks over to sit next to Kiel. “Maybe, would you call the cops on me if I was?”
“No,” Kiel looks down to continue examining the rag. He then holds it up in Archer’s direction. “What kind of fabric is this?”
“Cotton, now get it away from my face before you hit me with it,” He grabs Kiel’s arm and moves it away enough to not get hit.
“Aww scared of getting hit by a dirty rag,” Kiel teases, waving the rag around.
“No,” Archer grips his arm. “I just don’t feel like getting my face dirty before we eat.”
“No fun,” Kiel drops the rag and sighs.
The rag falls onto the floor making the area underneath it slightly wet. Kiel stands up and walks with Archer into the kitchen to scope out dinner. When they walk in they are met with an even stronger smell of food. Mrs. Winters looks up and smiles.
“Hi guys.”
“Hey mom, is dinner almost done?” Kiel sits down in the empty kitchen on the island.
“Yeah just finishing up the potatoes and broccoli. Your dad is going through few papers in the study and packing the last of the boxes in the moving van.”
“There are still boxes in the house,” Archer pipes up and looks at her surprised. “You guys leave tomorrow, I just assumed everything was already in the van.”
“Yeah no, it got late last night and the movers got tired and went home.”
Kiel fidgets with another rag that was on the island. He slumps forward and lets out a long groan.
“You alright love,” His mother sets down her spatula and turns over to him.
“Yeah, just worn out, we did a lot of finishing touches in our house last night.”
“Oh yeah, I bet you had fun. I can see you and Archer living a peaceful life,” She smiles.
Kiel turns his head away but blushes. Archer noticed and raises a brow. He feels his forehead.
“You feeling okay, Kiel?”
Kiel hides his face still blushing but his blush wasn’t from being sick it was a little of something else.
“Yeah I’m fine don’t worry about me,” Kiel mumbles.
Mrs. Winters looks over giving Kiel a knowing smile. She knew that look, it was the look of like and admiration. Kiel sits there head on his forearms blushing, Mrs. Winters turns back to cooking, and Archer went off to find Kiel’s father in the study.
Around 15 minutes later Mrs. Winters called for the three boys. Dinner was ready and Mrs. Winters, Kiel, and Archer filed into the dining room and sat down. The dining table was adorned with plates of fish, green beans, potatoes, and gravy. There were also plates, napkins, and sliver wear that Kiel and Archer had set up. Mrs. Winters had also placed a vase full of lilies in the center of it all and now she was sitting at the end of the table.
“Sit down and eat boys,” She smiles.
The three men shuffled into the table. Mr. Winters sits down at the head of the table next to his wife. Kiel sits opposite of his mother and Archer sits next to Kiel. They say thanks and what not before filling their plates.
“Kiel what do you want to eat?” Archer says as he holds a plate for Kiel and himself.
“Fish and green beans with salt,” He replies and kicks his feet contently under the table.
“Kiel stop that,” Mr. Winters speaks up a bit sharply.
“Sorry dad,” Kiel stops kicking his feet and waits patiently for his food.
Archer fills Kiel’s plate with the fish and salted green beans and then hands it to him. He places a fork in his hand and ruffles Kiel’s hair before filling a plate of his own.
“So…boys hows the house coming along all moved in?” Mr. Winters looks up as he swallows.
“Yeah pretty well everything is moved in. Nice and homey,” Archer smiles, taking a bite of his own food.
“Boys, I never asked, what jobs will the two of you be doing when we leave?” Mrs. Winters smiles once again. Neither Archer or Kiel were used to her constant smile but appreciated more then her snarky attitude all the time.
“I’m going to try being a cashier at a cafe and Archer will be a delivery man for the same cafe,” Kiel pipes up.
“Oh, that’s very lovely but how will you manage as a cashier? You know with your disability and customers all the time.” She looks at him doubtful.
“I think it will be a struggle but if I fail, I also want to start writing.”
“Oh honey good for you. I hope everything works out for you and Archer with this new chapter of life,” She smiles once more, though this time more caring and loving than ever.
Kiel’s eyes widen and he tears up as he hears his mothers words. Archer looks over worried and just as he was about to ask if Kiel was okay, Kiel rushed over and hugged his mother. Mrs. Winters’s eyes fill with love and he hugs him.
“Oh Kiel. You are going to be okay,” She smiles. “Everything will be okay.
She holds Kiel for a great amount of time. After Kiel calmed down they eat their last meal talking and basking in the love and peace for one another.
