Rise of The Forgotten: From Despised Weakling to the God of All Magic

Part 13: The Calm Before the Storm

Part 13: The Calm Before the Storm

Feb 08, 2025

Kieran and Elara stood at the entrance of a peaceful town nestled near the Royal Palace in the far west. The place was vibrant with cobblestone streets lined with charming cottages, colorful stalls brimming with fruits and trinkets, and townsfolk whose laughter echoed through the air. The scent of freshly baked bread mingled with blooming flowers from a nearby garden.

"This is a nice change of pace," Elara said with a smile, taking a deep breath of the crisp air.

Kieran nodded slightly. "It’s rare to find such peace these days."

They wandered through the town, exploring every corner. They stopped by a street vendor selling skewers of seasoned meat and vegetables, savoring the flavors. Elara giggled as she spilled a bit of sauce on her cloak, while Kieran shook his head with a faint smirk.

Further down, they came across a garden filled with vibrant blooms of all colors. Children laughed as they played tag, their joyful voices filling the air. Kieran, despite his reserved nature, found himself drawn to the serenity of the place.

"Look!" Elara said excitedly, pointing toward a group of musicians playing upbeat tunes near the town square. "Let’s dance."

Kieran raised an eyebrow. "I don’t dance."

"Come on!" Elara grabbed his arm and pulled him toward the music.

Though reluctant, Kieran allowed himself to be led. They moved to the rhythm, laughing as they stumbled through the steps. For a brief moment, the weight of their journey lifted, replaced by simple joy.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the town, they decided it was time to find an inn. They came across a cozy establishment with wooden beams and a warm glow emanating from its windows.

"A room for two, please," Elara requested at the front desk.

The innkeeper smiled kindly. "Of course. Top floor, first door on the left."

They entered their room, simple yet comfortable, with two beds and a small table near the window. The scent of lavender lingered in the air.

"I'll take the bed near the window," Elara claimed cheerfully as she placed her belongings down.

"Fine by me," Kieran replied as he set his sword within reach.

Hours passed in quiet relaxation until a low rumble echoed in the distance. Kieran stood by the window, watching as dark clouds gathered on the horizon. Lightning flickered, illuminating the sky, followed by the heavy patter of rain on the rooftops.

"A storm’s coming," Elara said softly, joining him by the window.

"Looks like it," Kieran muttered, his sharp senses on alert despite the peaceful setting.

The wind howled, shaking the trees and rattling the shutters. The once serene town was now shrouded in the ominous embrace of the storm. Though nature raged outside, a strange sense of calm remained between Kieran and Elara.

Little did they know, this storm would be more than just a force of weather—it was a prelude to events that would change everything.

The rain drummed steadily against the rooftop, creating a rhythmic lull that filled the room. The scent of fresh rainfall mingled with the warm aroma of boiling water as Kieran heated it over a magical flame. He carefully prepared two cups of steaming coffee, the rich scent wafting through the room.

Turning toward Elara, who sat by the window watching the rain, Kieran walked over and handed her a cup. "Here, this will warm you up."

Elara smiled softly, her fingers brushing his as she accepted the cup. "Thanks, Kieran."

He sat down beside her, the gentle warmth of the coffee radiating between them. The storm outside created an intimate cocoon, isolating them from the rest of the world. The flickering lantern cast soft shadows across the room.

For a while, they sipped in comfortable silence, the tension of their long journey momentarily forgotten. Elara's gaze drifted from the rain to Kieran, her face flushed with a faint pink hue. Their eyes met, and time seemed to slow.

Neither spoke, but the unspoken bond between them grew stronger with every passing second. Kieran's usual stoic expression softened as he leaned closer, instinct guiding his movements.

Elara's breath hitched, her heart racing as she closed the distance between them. In that fleeting moment, words were unnecessary. Their lips met in a tender, lingering kiss, filled with both hesitation and certainty—a connection forged through trials, trust, and newfound affection.

When they finally parted, Elara's blush deepened, and Kieran's expression, though calm, held a newfound warmth. The storm outside roared on, oblivious to the quiet, transformative moment between them.

As night deepened, a powerful gust of wind suddenly howled through the room, forcing the window to swing wide open with a loud bang. The flames in the lantern flickered violently.

Kieran stood abruptly, setting his cup down. "Stay here," he said firmly, striding toward the window to close it.

But as he reached for the latch, his sharp eyes caught movement beyond the rain-soaked forest. A shadowy figure stood motionless, partially obscured by the dense trees. Lightning flashed, illuminating the silhouette for a brief second—tall, cloaked, and emanating a sinister aura.

Kieran narrowed his eyes, his senses flaring. "Elara," he called calmly but urgently, "we're not alone."

Elara immediately rose, her hand instinctively hovering near the hilt of her dagger. "What is it?"

"A figure in the forest," Kieran said grimly, his voice low. "Stay ready."

The peaceful night had shattered, and danger lurked just beyond the veil of the storm.

As the sun's first light filtered through the heavy clouds, the storm from the previous night slowly dissipated, leaving behind a wet, refreshed world. The forests around the town shimmered under the golden rays, the early morning mist clinging to the earth. Kieran and Elara packed their belongings swiftly, not speaking much, each aware of the unsettled feeling lingering from the night before.

Kieran cast one last glance toward the forest, where the mysterious figure had been, but the figure's presence had vanished with the dawn. For now, there was no threat, but the uneasy feeling remained.

After securing their packs, they set out, making their way through the village and heading toward the Royal Palace entrance. The path was well-worn, and the town had begun to stir with activity, people going about their morning routines.

Upon reaching the gates of the Royal Palace, they were greeted by a line of regal guards, standing tall and vigilant. The towering stone walls of the palace loomed ahead, an impressive structure of both beauty and fortification. At the entrance stood King Aldric, a tall, well-built man with graying hair and piercing blue eyes. Beside him stood his daughter, Princess Serena, a graceful young woman with silver-blonde hair and a regal yet kind demeanor.

"Welcome, travelers," King Aldric said, his voice deep but warm. "We have been expecting you." His gaze flickered briefly to Kieran, assessing him, but it was his daughter, Serena, who smiled warmly at them.

"Father, they must be weary from their journey. Please, allow them to rest and refresh themselves," Princess Serena said, her voice as gentle as the morning breeze. She then turned her attention to Kieran and Elara. "It is an honor to finally meet you both."

Kieran nodded respectfully, though his mind still lingered on the events of the night. "Thank you, Your Majesty. We are honored by your invitation."

"Come," King Aldric motioned to the palace doors, "there is much to discuss, and I believe you will find comfort within these walls. Rest and prepare for what lies ahead."

The guards stepped aside, allowing them to enter the palace. As they crossed the threshold, the royal family led them into the palace's lavish halls, the grandeur of the place immediately evident. Rich tapestries adorned the walls, and intricate stonework was displayed throughout.

Serena spoke as they walked. "We’ve heard of the struggles you’ve faced on your journey, and we would like to offer our assistance. But there are matters to discuss that concern not only you but the very future of the realm."

Kieran exchanged a brief glance with Elara. The time for rest was coming, but it was clear that the journey was far from over. The royal family, and their knowledge, might be the key to understanding the threats looming over the kingdom.

The servants moved swiftly, placing platters of roasted meats, bread, fresh fruits, and an assortment of drinks on the large table in the royal dining hall. The rich aromas filled the room, tempting even the most disciplined of appetites. King Aldric, with his dignified presence, gestured for everyone to sit.

Kieran, Elara, and the royal family began their meal, the clink of silverware and soft conversation filling the space. Despite the hospitality, Kieran couldn’t shake the weight of the journey and the troubling thoughts of the dark figure in the forest. The King, though powerful and respected, was still a man, and Kieran sensed there was much left unsaid.

King Aldric, as it turned out, was not only the ruler of the land but also the legendary Mage of Wisdom. His powers were vast, yet not infinite. His wisdom came from years of experience, study, and knowledge, but even he admitted that no one could foresee everything. In this world where gods and demons lurked in the shadows, even the wisest of men had their blind spots.

"I’ve studied the flow of magic for decades," Aldric explained during their conversation, "but there are some forces I do not fully understand. This organization you speak of—the one with the symbol of the eye—appears to be older and more intricate than any of us realized. Even with all my knowledge, we may be walking into a web that is beyond us."

Kieran nodded, but the feeling of unease lingered. The pieces of the puzzle were scattered, and with each revelation, they seemed more confusing than before.

As the evening grew later, Princess Serena offered a diversion, suggesting she show Elara and Kieran around the kingdom. "It will help you become familiar with our land," she said, her gentle smile revealing a kindness that put Elara at ease.

They toured the bustling streets of the kingdom, observing the vibrant market, where merchants sold colorful fabrics, exotic fruits, and rare magical ingredients. The people were friendly, and the atmosphere was lively, a stark contrast to the danger lurking in the shadows. Yet, despite the calm exterior of the kingdom, Kieran couldn't fully relax. Every corner, every passerby felt like a potential threat.
