The Insignificant Mage who Defied Magic

Part 8: The Prodigy of the Twin Moons

Part 8: The Prodigy of the Twin Moons

Feb 12, 2025

As the night fell over the kingdom, the air grew still, and the flickering candlelight inside the grand castle cast long shadows along the polished marble floors. In the royal chambers, a newborn prince was cradled in the arms of the queen, his cries echoing through the halls as nobles and dignitaries gathered for the grand celebration.

The birth of the prince was a cause for jubilation, for the king and queen had long awaited the arrival of an heir to continue the royal bloodline. But there was more to the celebration than just the birth of a child. The prophecy, whispered among the seers for years, had finally come to fruition.

The nobles, dressed in their finest silks and velvets, laughed and raised their goblets, their voices rising in mirth and triumph. The king, seated at the head of the long, ornately decorated table, looked upon his newborn son with pride, a smug smile stretching across his face.

"Finally," the king said, his voice thick with satisfaction, "the prophecy is fulfilled. This boy, born under the shimmering glow of the twin moons, is the one the seers foretold. The power of the twin moons is within him, and with it, he will restore this kingdom to its former glory."

The room erupted in cheers, their voices laced with admiration and reverence for the newborn prince, as if he were already a great hero, destined to lead them all. But in the far corners of the room, the whispers continued, murmurs that went unnoticed by the celebrators, but not by the few who knew the truth. The true heir to the prophecy was still out there—unseen, unknown, and far from the reach of the king’s grasp.

As the nobles toasted to their bright future, none of them knew that their true prince—the one with the power to reshape the kingdom—was not the boy in the queen’s arms. It was the child who had been abandoned, the one who had been left to die in the forest. Aeren.

But he was no longer the helpless, powerless boy they had cast aside. He was growing stronger each day, and his power, unbeknownst to them, was more than any of them could ever imagine.

Far from the castle, in the heart of the forest, Aeren slept soundly under the stars, unaware of the twisted web of fate that had been woven around him. And as the king and his nobles celebrated, they unknowingly awaited the return of the true heir to the prophecy—the very child they had rejected.

The night was silent, save for the crackling of the fire in the camp. As Aeren slept, his dreams were filled with visions of fire and water, earth and wind. The magic within him stirred, waiting to be unleashed. Thalos, ever vigilant, kept watch over the boy, unaware that the path they were walking would soon lead them back to the very heart of the kingdom that had abandoned him.

Back at the castle, the king raised his goblet high. "To the future," he declared, "to the one who will bring us victory and prosperity!"

The nobles cheered, but the king’s words were laced with a dark undertone of arrogance. He believed the prophecy had been fulfilled. But deep down, a small, quiet part of him wondered: What if the true prophecy had already begun?

As the sun began to rise, its warm rays slowly pierced through the dense canopy of the forest. The dew on the leaves shimmered like diamonds, and the air was fresh and crisp. Thalos and Aeren stirred from their slumber, the sounds of the forest coming alive around them. It was time to hunt and gather their daily resources.

The two set off in silence, making their way through the underbrush with the practiced ease of those who had lived in the wild for years. Aeren’s steps were light, his senses keen as always, while Thalos moved with the quiet grace of a seasoned warrior. They had grown accustomed to these daily routines, but today, something felt different—a strange tension hung in the air.

As they ventured deeper into the forest, the familiar sights of the trees and wildlife took on an ominous tone. The chirping of birds and rustling of leaves seemed distant now, replaced by an unsettling silence. It wasn’t long before they came across a gruesome scene—a man, lying motionless on the ground, his body half-devoured by a pack of Ice Lizards.

The creatures were massive, their scales glinting with a frost-like sheen as they tore into the unfortunate man, their cold, hungry eyes fixed on their meal. Thalos’s eyes narrowed. Without hesitation, he drew his blade and charged forward, his movements a blur of precision and power. The Ice Lizards, caught off guard, turned to face him. In a swift, brutal flurry, Thalos dispatched them, his sword cleaving through their icy hides with ease.

But as the last of the creatures fell, Thalos’s expression hardened. The damage had been done—the man was already beyond saving. His body lay lifeless in the dirt, torn apart by the vicious beasts. Aeren stood silently beside him, his eyes cold with sorrow, the weight of the moment settling in.

They both knew what had to be done. There was no saving the man, no bringing him back. Thalos’s eyes softened as he turned to Aeren, his voice solemn.

“We may not be able to change the past, but we can honor it,” Thalos said quietly. “Sometimes, life is cruel, and there is no justice. But it’s up to us how we live with it. We must always choose to move forward, even when the world seems to turn its back on us.”

Thalos knelt beside the fallen man, carefully gathering the body into a makeshift grave. Aeren, though still young, understood the importance of these moments—of showing respect to the dead, even when it was too late to save them. They buried the man in silence, the weight of their actions settling in the heavy stillness of the forest.

Once the task was done, Thalos stood and looked out into the distance, his gaze far away.

“Life isn’t always about winning or losing,” Thalos continued, his voice low and steady. “It’s about finding purpose, even when there seems to be none. We do what we can with what we’re given, and sometimes, that’s all we can do. Remember, Aeren, you cannot save everyone. But you can decide how you respond when faced with loss.”

Aeren nodded, his mind processing Thalos’s words. Though he was still young, he could feel the weight of the lessons Thalos imparted to him each day. In this world, filled with pain and loss, it was important to know that not everything could be changed, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t make a difference.

The two stood in quiet reflection, the wind whispering through the trees as they moved on, continuing their journey deeper into the wild.

Years passed like a fleeting dream, the days blending into each other as Aeren’s training continued under Thalos’s watchful eye. The boy who had once been helpless and weak had transformed into a skilled prodigy, excelling in every area of combat and magic. Thalos pushed him relentlessly, knowing that Aeren’s potential was limitless. The bond between them deepened as mentor and student, though it was clear that Aeren had surpassed any expectations, including his own.

By the time Aeren turned sixteen, he had mastered not only swordsmanship and marksmanship but also the ancient and complex magics that had once seemed beyond his reach. His command over elemental forces was unrivaled, and his precision in combat was flawless. Whether with a sword, a bow, or the power of his mind, Aeren had become a force to be reckoned with.

Thalos often marveled at how quickly Aeren absorbed and applied the lessons he imparted. At times, it felt as though Aeren had no limit—his strength, speed, intellect, and magic were all beyond his years. But while Aeren’s progress was astonishing, there was always an underlying sense of something even greater waiting to be awakened, something that could not be taught. It was the raw willpower within him, the driving force that pushed him beyond human limits. Thalos had seen hints of it when Aeren had unlocked his magic, but he knew this power was more than just the culmination of training. It was destiny, intertwined with the prophecy, and it was growing stronger with every passing day.

One evening, as the two sat around a campfire after another grueling day of practice, Thalos spoke, his voice uncharacteristically serious.

“Aeren,” he began, his gaze fixed on the flames, “You’ve become everything I hoped you would be and more. But I sense something within you… something that I haven’t fully understood. Your abilities go beyond what any normal mage could achieve. And though I have trained you in every way I know… there’s still something inside you that you must come to understand.”

Aeren, ever the attentive student, looked up from his meal. “What do you mean?”

Thalos took a deep breath, his brow furrowed with thought. “Your magic… your strength—everything about you suggests that you are meant for something greater than simply being a warrior or a mage. You were born for something beyond the confines of this world. And one day, you will have to face that destiny, for better or worse.”

Aeren remained silent for a moment, his sharp eyes reflecting the flickering light of the fire. The years of training had made him perceptive, and he could sense the weight of Thalos’s words.

“I’m ready,” Aeren finally replied, his voice calm yet resolute. “Whatever lies ahead, I’ll face it.”

Thalos nodded, though a small frown tugged at the corners of his mouth. “I don’t doubt your strength, Aeren. But strength alone isn’t always enough. The path ahead will test you in ways you cannot yet imagine. And when the time comes, you must decide what kind of person you want to be.”

Aeren nodded solemnly, his eyes narrowing with resolve. "I know. I won't forget the lessons you've taught me."

As the fire crackled and the stars shone brightly overhead, Aeren felt the weight of his future pressing down on him. He had trained tirelessly for this moment, and now, standing at the threshold of adulthood, he could feel the pull of destiny. The prophecy that had once seemed like a distant, irrelevant thing now loomed over him. He was no longer just Aeren Valcrest—the boy abandoned by his kingdom. He was something more.

In the stillness of the night, Aeren looked to the sky, his thoughts wandering. He had mastered the sword, the bow, and magic, but deep down, he knew that true mastery came from understanding himself. His power was beyond comprehension, but it was not without its dangers. His journey had just begun, and he would have to confront the shadows of his past, the expectations placed upon him, and the prophecy that seemed to weave itself into every moment of his life.

But whatever lay ahead, he would face it with unwavering resolve. For he was not just a prodigy; he was the one destined to change the world.

And no matter what fate had in store for him, he would never again be the helpless child abandoned in the forest.

The Insignificant Mage Who Defied Fate

Born under a night of divine omens, Aeren Valcrest was hailed as the future pride of the kingdom-until a devastating revelation shattered his destiny. Labeled a failure for possessing no mana, the very essence of magic, Aeren was disowned by his father, King Aldred, and abandoned in the dark, unforgiving forest.

Left to die in the wilderness, fate intervened when Thalos, a legendary and reclusive archmage, found the forsaken prince. Taking Aeren under his wing, Thalos vowed to teach him ancient secrets that transcended traditional magic.

Hidden from the eyes of a world that scorned him, Aeren trained relentlessly, unlocking a power so rare it defied the limits of mortal understanding. As whispers of darkness rise across the kingdom, Aeren must decide whether to return to the land that cast him aside-or remain hidden, a mage beyond rank and reason.

A tale of rejection, resilience, and unimaginable strength, Aeren's journey will prove that greatness isn't defined by birthright-but by the courage to defy fate itself.
