Like an Iced Caramel Latte (Hiatus)

Chapter 8: This is the New Intern?

Chapter 8: This is the New Intern?

Feb 16, 2025

Mr. Kim spent the little time left of his weekend to read some parts of the books he had just bought.

Even though he couldn't read much, he still learned a few things about this new universe he was in.

Even from just the title Mr. Kim realized that those who can't sense pheromones are called betas. Although, the book mentioned that people don't often use that title outside of medical uses. Mr. Kim couldn't understand why this was. He figured out that there is atleast a slight negative view against omegas, with the way that people were reassuring that he would be okay despite being an omega. So he wondered if this existed for alphas and betas, but there wasn't anything so far to suggest this. In fact, Mr. Kim noticed that people think highly of alphas simply because they are alphas, and in turn they often hold a dislike for omegas. Mr. Kim wondered if this was a part of the reason why people don't outwardly state if they are an omega or beta.

Besides the dynamics of betas, omegas and alphas, Mr. Kim read a little more about the characteristics of omegas.

Of course, Mr. Kim was still shocked at the fact that omegas go through a heat period. Not only this, omegas have the ability to become pregnant, including male omegas.

No matter how many times he was told or how many times he read about it, Mr. Kim couldn't believe that his body could have a child. When thinking about that, the heat cycles and the symptoms that come with it, didn't seem as confusing.

Because Mr. Kim hadn't had much time to read the books he had brought over the weekend, he packed the one titled 'Omegas, Betas and Alphas. Oh My!' into his work bag. He planned to read it during his lunch break hoping to finish it by Friday when he would next see Dr. Choi.

When Mr. Kim walked into the office, the team leader who was patting the shoulder of a tall young man, called him over.

"Oh, Mr. Kim, come here," he said.

"Good morning Sir," Mr. Kim replied.

"Mr. Kim, this is the new intern that you're in charge of."

The intern turned to look at Mr. Kim, and for a split second, he glanced at Mr. Kim from head to toe. As if judging everything that he could see, his hair and clothes, the way he stood and even the way he spoke. The intern appeared to be wearing a designer brand suit, it was seemingly tailored to perfectly fit their taller statue. Everything from their shoes to their tie and dress shirt were from the same designer brand.

They reached out their hand to Mr. Kim,

"Hello sir, I'm Kang Yoon. It’s nice to meet you,” they spoke.

Mr. Kim shook their hand, “yes. It’s good to meet you, Mr. Kang.”

The team leader cleared his throat before speaking, “why don’t you spend this morning teaching him the basics about office work?”

“Yes sir.” Mr. Kim replied.

Mr. Kim led Mr. Kang to the desk that he would be using. There were only the bare basics, but it was enough to see how much he knew.

Mr. Kim stood as Mr. Kang sat at the computer,“Mr. Kang, do you know how to input data?” he asked.

There wasn’t a need for an answer as Mr. Kang’s expression gave away the fact that he wasn’t sure what Mr. Kim was talking about.

“I’ll teach you the quickest way to do it. Listen to my instructions, okay?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Then, first open a new data sheet,” Mr. Kim pointed to an app on the desktop, “we use that application here.”

“Yes.”

Mr. Kim wasn’t sure if it was nerves or maybe the intern was someone who hadn’t used computers much, but the intern was quite slow to move around the mouse.

After a few more seconds, the new data sheet was finally opened.

“Now we have to manually enter these numbers into this spreadsheet.”

“Manually?”

“Yes, for now it’s the best way to ensure that the data is entered correctly.”

“I see,”

“Mr. Kang, while you’re entering this data I’ll be at my desk. Make sure to ask me if you need help.”

“Yes, sir.”

It felt as if Mr. Kim was only able to sit down before the intern called him over again.
“Mr. Kim, I think I deleted the spreadsheet.”

“That’s okay, things happen. Let’s just start over.”

Mr. Kim started the intern over on the task, knowing that he once did the very same thing when he was new.

Yet again, Mr. Kim went back to his desk and as he sat down the intern called him.

“Mr. Kim, the spreadsheet isn’t updating even though I’m typing.”

“Mr. Kang, you have to press enter to type into the next row.”

“Yes, sir.”

These small incidents continued, until Mr. Kim thought it would be better to sit near the intern while he completes his first task.

Mr. Kim hadn’t trained anyone new before so he was unsure what the average skill level is for an intern.

He brought his bag and chair over to the intern’s desk.

“Mr. Kim, I’m sorry you have to go through all this trouble.”

“It’s okay, you’re new. I’ll explain everything from the beginning, it’d be good if you can take notes or write down questions as we go along.”

“Yes.” The intern looked around the empty desk, quickly realizing that there wasn't anything to write on.

Mr. Kim noticed this and dug into his bag for a piece of paper and a pen that Mr. Kang could use.

During his search, Mr. Kim’s book fell from his bag.

The intern quickly picked it up and paused when reading the title.

He gave it to Mr. Kim, not saying a word.

“Thank you,” Mr. Kim said while putting the book back into his bag.

He found a stack of post-it notes and a pen that could be used for notes,

“Here-”

“Mr. Kim, I noticed you had a scent of pheromones.”

“Ye-yes?”
“Are you an omega?”

There was a pause as Mr. Kim didn’t know how to respond. He wasn’t sure what this intern meant by asking this question. Whether his behavior would change, depending on his answer. If he should lie or simply tell the truth, he was unsure.

“I’m-”

There was a clacking of heels that stopped at the desk, and there stood was Ms. Park.

“Are you the new intern?” Ms. Park asked.

“Yes, I’m Kang Yoon.”

“I’m Ms. Park and this is Ms. Lee. We’re heading for lunch if you’d like to join.”

“Oh I’m,”

“Mr. Kim, you’re taking your lunch break now right?”

“Yes,”

“I hope you enjoy it.”

“You too, Ms. Park.”

“Let’s go, Mr. Kang.”

Ms. Park had practically dragged the intern out with her and a few other employees, leaving Mr. Kim to spend his lunch alone.

Mr. Kim wasn’t sure if Ms. Park had helped him on purpose or not, but either way he was grateful for her. As this gave him time to think about what he should say.

Mr. Kim was more tired during his lunch break than usual. Training an intern who doesn't seem used to working in an office was harder than he thought it would be.

Mr. Kim was thinking about their earlier interaction, his asking of whether Mr. Kim is an omega, and wondering what he meant by it.

The opening of the rooftop door interrupted his thoughts,

"Hello," a voice spoke.

Mr. Kim not only recognized who's voice this belonged to, he also could remember the scent of freshly baked bread that belonged to Mr. Lim.

"Hello Mr. Lim," he replied.

Mr. Lim sat on the bench beside Mr. Kim's,

"Are you here to eat lunch again?" he asked.

"I was actually going to read a book."

"Oh really? Have you been enjoying the books you got? They seemed interesting, if they're good you should let me know. Recently I've been interested in reading more."

"I'll let you know."

"Thank you, Mr. Kim."

The conversation between the two came to a halt. However, there was no awkward atmosphere between the two, they simply relaxed into their reading. Mr. Kim his book and Mr. Lim on his phone. Mr. Kim had quickly forgotten about the situation with the intern from the morning.

In the air was the swirling scents of iced coffee and bread, which made both more easily feel relaxed.

Neither one would say this to the other, but the two shared a thought,

'this is nice.’
