Rain looked forward from the billowing greyish smoke that rose from the smoke stack of the locomotive, to the horizon where the endless night of the countryside disappeared. Small glowing dots that were no larger than specks littered the line of land that connected the earth to the sky. The car jerked beneath her as the train's speed began to slow with its expendable cargo. It was on approach to its destination only minutes away—the death camp, Treblinka.
The lights of some small farm houses streaked past Rain's vision, leaving small lines of light in her sight. She kept her gaze forward, knowing there would be guards waiting at the camp. Sinking lower, Rain slid off of her perch on the roof and back onto the steps that led to the watch box. Pressing her back against the door that stood on the opposite side of the train from the platform at Treblinka death camp station, she waited for the train's diminishing speed to come to a full stop. The train whistled loudly as it slowed, signaling to the camp of its arrival. Flood lights lit the station; casting a dancing shadow of the train across the snow as it made its way into the camp's grounds. Bringing her fingertips to her forehead, Rain closed her eyes while making the sign of the cross across her chest.
