Emily smiled cruelly at my words—savoring moment victory over adversary finally broken—but before she could gloat further, creature beside her moved again; this time lunging forward with speed defying its size until stood mere inches away from where I lay helpless upon cold stone floor. Hot breath washed across face carrying stench decay and something else...something familiar yet impossible to place amidst terror gripping mind in iron vise.
"Wait..." Emily began protestingly—too late—as tendrils lashed out striking me repeatedly about head shoulders arms legs until flesh tore open beneath their relentless onslaught revealing bone underneath glistening wetly under flickering candlelight. Pain exploded through every nerve ending like fireworks display gone horribly wrong; each burst agony searing soul itself while screams echoed off walls surrounding us—trapped within chamber designed specifically for such torment.
Then, just as suddenly...it stopped—as abruptly cut-off mid-stroke by unseen hand wielding power over this monstrosity now looming above me like grim reaper come collect debt owed long ago. Emily stood there trembling visibly; eyes wide with shock horror realization of what she'd unleashed upon world through own actions.
"Please..." I begged weakly—blood filling mouth choking off words once more."Make it stop..."
She looked down at me then, tears streaming freely now unchecked by pride or defiance previously held aloft like shields against reality closing in around us both. And for brief moment thought saw something else reflected back within those wet depths...regret maybe? Remorse perhaps?
But whatever emotion flickered briefly across her features vanished almost instantly replaced once more cold detachment earlier displayed when first waking here amidst nightmare come life.
"No," she said simply before turning away from me completely—leaving behind only empty silence broken solely by ragged gasps air being forced through lungs no longer capable holding back screams threatening escape at any moment."I can't."
And with those final words echoing hollowly around chamber, creature above leaned down closer still until burning eyes filled entire field vision—and I knew there'd be nothing left after this...nothing but darkness eternal waiting patiently beyond reach light.
But even as tendrils reached out once more ready deliver finishing blows ending my life here amidst ruins of our own making—something else happened instead: a blinding flash illumination brighter than sun itself filling room until couldn't see anything save pure white brilliance consuming all existence...and then, just like that...
Darkness.
I woke up to a world turned inside out, my bedroom ceiling now floor and vice versa—gravity defying all logic as it pinned me down against unyielding wood grain that should've been above but was somehow below instead. My head throbbed like someone had taken an axe to skull; vision swam in dizzying patterns of light and dark until finally settling on familiar yet distorted surroundings.
"Hello?" I croaked, voice echoing eerily through what felt more cave than room now—each word bouncing off walls that seemed closer somehow...tighter. Panic surged within chest but was quickly drowned out by a cold realization: something had changed; shifted in fundamental ways beyond mere rearrangement of furniture or even dimensions themselves.
A soft scratching sound drew my attention towards corner where shadows huddled together like conspirators plotting some dark deed—eyes gleaming menacingly from depths impossible to penetrate. It moved, that darkness...slithered across floorboards with sinuous grace before pausing abruptly at edge of light cast by flickering lamp now hanging precariously above me.
"Who's there?" I demanded more out bravado than genuine curiosity; heart pounding wildly against ribcage as if trying to escape confines altogether. No response came—not even echo—but something else did: a whisper carried on breath that wasn't mine, words forming in mind unbidden yet undeniably present nonetheless.
You cannot run from what is already inside you.
I shuddered violently; gooseflesh erupting across skin despite stifling heat now permeating every inch of this...this prison. "What do you want?" I whispered back defiantly, though fear threatened to choke off each syllable before they could escape lips.
More scratching—closer than ever—and then a voice: low rumble like distant thunder threatening storm yet unbroken by lightning's flash."You have been chosen," it said—not from shadows but within them; resonating through very marrow of my bones until felt as much part me now. "To bear witness...to understand."
"Understand what?" I challenged, desperation creeping into tone despite best efforts to maintain composure.
"The truth behind creation itself." Pause—then laughter echoing endlessly around chamber like madman's cackle; sending shivers down spine once more even as sweat beaded forehead. "But first...you must see."
Before could ask what exactly I needed seeing, darkness surged forward—a tidal wave of pure blackness swallowing everything in its path including myself—and then there was only void.
When light returned—if indeed it ever truly left—I found myself standing amidst ruins; crumbling walls stretching out around me like skeletal fingers clawing desperately at heavens above. Sun hung low on horizon, casting long shadows across landscape that seemed both familiar yet alien somehow...distorted by some unseen force warping reality itself into twisted parody of existence.
"Where am I?" whispered aloud—though no one answered save wind whistling mournfully through shattered remnants once proud structures now reduced to mere husks devoid life or purpose. A sense dread settled heavy upon shoulders; each step forward feeling heavier than last as if trudging against current some unseen river flowing steadily towards inevitable doom.
Then I saw them: figures huddled together amidst wreckage, faces turned upwards toward something only they could see—eyes wide with terror yet filled wonder too. As approached cautiously so not startle fragile beings clearly on edge already; recognized one among group as old friend from childhood days long since passed...or thought to have been.
"Tom?" called softly—not wanting intrude upon whatever private hell each was experiencing but needing confirmation own eyes weren't deceiving me here."Is that you?"
He turned slowly, gaze meeting mine briefly before darting away again towards sky where clouds roiled ominously overhead—threatening storm yet never quite breaking. "Alex," he acknowledged softly; voice barely audible over rustling leaves and distant rumble thunder.
"What's happening?" I asked urgently now—for time seemed suddenly precious commodity not to be squandered on pleasantries or polite conversation."What are we seeing?"
Tom looked at me then, really saw for first since our reunion—and what passed between us in that moment defied all language capable expressing it adequately. Fear yes; but also awe...reverence even? As if glimpsing something so vast and terrible beyond comprehension could only inspire both dread fear of unknown coupled with profound respect its sheer magnitude.
"You wouldn't understand," he said finally, shaking head slowly."No one can until they've seen for themselves."
Before I had chance press further; ask more questions burning on tip tongue—another voice cut through air like knife: cold hard edge slicing cleanly into fabric reality itself. "They come...“
