A New Life (Tales From the Alps Short Stories #1)

A New Life - Part 3

A New Life - Part 3

Feb 27, 2025

It was in the late midday that One-eye woke up, panting. He'd only had nightmares in this sleep, and was glad that he awoke. But, as soon as he saw the pup, he realized that the real problems were only arising now. What am I going to do? Raise her? I can't raise a pup! Look at me! I'm a mon...

He paused his own thoughts before he'd go on another emotional roller coaster. He knew he had to take care of this puppy. It was his duty.

"Alright, get up, squirt! About time we found ourselves a home in this new territory."

The pup got up instantly, bags under her eyes. She probably didn't sleep all night...

The two wolves traveled through the newly-discovered territory for a half day or so. One-eye didn't just want to find a de--he also wanted to see what the territory had to offer, and if it was far enough from the Clan. I'm never, ever going back.

The territory wasn't that big in the forest, so One-eye decided that he'd add part of the meadow to it; as well. Whether humans came to it or not, more territory was always good.

He and Lynn did find a 'den': A tree with strange branches growing down the trunk, in an almost umbrella-like shape. It'd be a good den to cover them for when it would get wet, and, since it lay beyond a very small hill in the middle of the territory, it was hidden enough. He left Lynn there to sleep, while he explored the rest of the territory on his own.

The most significant places it had to offer were the Creek, a big and wide brook that lay just beyond a small hill, and a tree One-eye had nicknamed the Awkwardtree, since it was bent in an angle from exactly 90 degrees, the canopy sown off by humans.

It's not perfect, but it seems like a nice, small territory, the old wolf told himself. Although it was small, it was still big enough for him and Lynn at least.

He'd killed the vixen this morning, without guilt in any way, so now there were no other competitors left for prey, except for maybe an occasional marten or so. But he didn't care about that.

At the end of this day, he'd discovered pretty much the entire territory, and he'd also caught a rabbit. He brought it to the den.

"Evening," he said as he dropped the rabbit in front of Lynn. Does she still drink milk? Or can she eat meat already? Or do I have to chew it for her? Dangit!

One-eye had no idea. "Eh...are you supposed to drink milk or anything? I...don't know any she-wolves..." No she-wolves who don't want to see me dead, at least.

But before he could say anything else, he saw that Lynn had already stuck her muzzle inside the belly he had gashed open while hunting, and was eating.

He shrugged and sat down beside her, about as mentally unprepared as he could be for this new life as father-figure, away from the Clan and the assassin-life he'd had until now.

One-eye never meant to kill a Lone One that had a family. But now he has, and he somehow has to cope with the fact that he now has to raise the pup whose father he killed.

Note: This short story is a companion to my animated webseries "Tales From the Alps: All Lone Ones" and "Tales From the Alps: Renegades". Watching both series before reading these stories is recommended. Both series can be found for free on YouTube.
