Chapter 9 - The Dinner of Revelations

Chapter 9 - The Dinner of Revelations

Mar 05, 2025

Some hours later,

Lily stood by the window, her mind reeling with the weight of her newfound identity, as she clenched the newspaper Cassie had given her.

The darkness outside seemed to press in on her, a constant reminder of the secrets she kept. Her father's announcement still lingered, a cold, calculated blow that had left her reeling.

Just as she was starting to gather her thoughts, the sound of footsteps echoed down the hallway.

David Conrad, the butler, appeared in the doorway, his expression as impassive as ever. But before he could speak, a figure swept past him, filling the room with an electric presence.

A gorgeous lady now stood in the doorway, her blonde hair cascading down her back like a river of gold. Her fiery eyes gleamed with an intensity that made Lily's skin prickle.

The lady's gaze swept the room, her eyes lingering on Lily before settling on Conrad.

Lily's eyes widened in surprise as she recognized the woman, obviously Damien's aunt, a woman she had heard so much about. Miss Delilah was a popular actress, model, and food critic known for her scathing reviews and razor-sharp wit.

"Ah, David, darling," Delilah purred, her voice dripping with honey. "I see you're still as charming as ever. But I'm afraid I won't be kept waiting. I have business with my dear niece-in-law."

Conrad's jaw tightened, but he stepped aside, allowing Delilah to sweep into the room. Lily felt a shiver run down her spine as Delilah's eyes locked onto hers.

Niece-in-law? Who on earth was she referring to?

"Lily, darling," Delilah cooed, her voice dripping with sweetness. "You look positively radiant. I do hope you're feeling better. We have so much to catch up on."

As Delilah glided across the room, Lily felt a sense of unease growing inside her. There was something about Delilah's manner that didn't quite add up – a sense of calculation behind her warm smile.

"I'm feeling better, thank you," Lily said, trying to sound polite.

Delilah's smile widened, her green eyes glinting with amusement. "I'm so glad to hear that, darling. Now, shall we join the others for dinner?"

Lily nodded, feeling a sense of trepidation wash over her. As they entered the dining room, the Hawke siblings - most of them in their teens - turned to face her, their gazes filled with curiosity and interest.

Xander, the eldest, spoke up, his voice deep and composed. He was tall and broad-shouldered, with piercing blue eyes and jet-black hair like Damien's.

"So you're the one everyone thinks is dead," Xander said, his eyes narrowing slightly.

Cassandra, the second eldest, smiled warmly at Lily. She had long, curly blonde hair and sky blue eyes that sparkled with kindness.

"I'm so glad you're here, Lily," Cassandra said. "It's been nice getting to know you already. I hope this dinner helps you feel a little more at ease."

Selene, the third eldest, observed Lily with a calculating gaze. She had short, spiky black hair and piercing green eyes that seemed to bore into Lily's soul.

"You're not what I expected," Selene said, her voice smooth and detached.

Emilia and Aidan, the mischievous twins, exchanged a glance before turning their attention to Lily. Emilia had long, straight brown hair and bright blue eyes that sparkled with mischief.

"I didn't think it was possible for someone to fake their own death so convincingly," Emilia said, her voice dripping with amusement.

Aidan, ever the mischief-maker, grinned. He had short, messy brown hair and bright blue eyes that twinkled with fun.

"But here you are," Aidan said, his voice full of excitement. "A real-life ghost."
Lysander, the charming one, flashed a warm smile at Lily. He had chiseled features and piercing green eyes that seemed to see right through her.

"Welcome to the family, Lily," Lysander said, his voice dripping with charm. "We're glad to have you."

Caspian, the brooding one, remained silent, his eyes fixed intently on Lily. He had short, dark hair and piercing green eyes that seemed to bore into her soul.

As the dinner conversation flowed around her, Lily felt a sense of unease growing inside her. There was something about the Hawke siblings that didn't quite add up – a sense of secrets and lies hidden beneath their charming smiles.

"So, Lily," Aiden said, his voice cutting through the chatter. "Tell us, what's it like being back from the dead?"

Lily hesitated, unsure of how to respond. But before she could say anything, Aunt Delilah intervened.

"Oh, Aiden, darling," Delilah said, her voice dripping with sweetness. "Let's not pry. Lily's been through enough already."

The table fell silent, with all eyes on Lily. She felt a surge of gratitude toward Aunt Delilah for intervening, but she also sensed that Delilah was hiding something.

"Thank you, Aunt Delilah," Lily said, trying to sound polite.

Delilah's smile widened, her fiery eyes glinting with amusement.

"Anytime, darling. Now, let's focus on getting to know each other better."

The conversation flowed easily after that, with the Hawke siblings asking Lily questions about her life before her supposed death. Lily answered as honestly as she could, but she couldn't shake the feeling that they were all hiding something from her.

As the dinner drew to a close, David Conrad appeared in the doorway, his expression formal.

"Lily, Master Damien is waiting for you," Conrad said, his voice low and gravelly.

Aunt Delilah gave her a gentle smile, her eyes full of reassurance. "Go on, darling. Damien will help you. He's the one who really understands."

Lily nodded, feeling a sense of trepidation wash over her. As she stood up, the Hawke siblings turned to her, their faces expressionless.

"We'll see you later, Lily," Xander said, his voice neutral.

Lily nodded, feeling a sense of unease growing inside her. She followed David Conrad out of the dining room, leaving the Hawke siblings and Aunt Delilah behind.

As they walked, the silence between them grew thicker, until Lily couldn't take it anymore.

"Where is Damien?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Conrad's expression remained impassive. "He's waiting for you in his study, miss."

Lily's heart skipped a beat. What did Damien want with her?

And why did she feel like she was walking into a trap?

She pushed the thoughts aside, focusing on the task at hand. She had to face Damien, no matter what.

As they approached the study, Lily could feel her heart pounding in her chest. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for what lay ahead.
