Gyaru walked out of her room with a carry-on bag. She's not running naked through the Blue Ridge, Flat thought. That was the tamest of the rumors. Flat waited until Gyaru left. And she waited some more for Gyaru to be off the third floor. Not wanting to take a chance on the werewolf's hearing. Flat tapped Crested's foot to get her attention from the television.
"Where does Gyaru go?" Flat said.
Go-Go zipped over from the kitchen.
"Honey, she'll be with Vincent," Go-Go said.
Crested didn't say anything. Flat leaned down close to the dog girl.
"Poppy, where do they go?" Flat said.
"Honey, she won't betray her pack leader," Go-Go said. Crested rolled over to sit up.
"Gyaru never says where they go. She returns smelling of sweat, cigarettes and lust," Crested said.
"Honey, I doubt Vincent gets lucky often," Go-Go said.
"They're a steady couple?" Flat said.
"They were dating in Fifth grade," Go-Go said.
10:00 pm July 8th, 2012.
Barbra Yamamoto, the wolf girl, age twelve, opened the window to hop out of the middle school dorms. She wore the gray and yellow middle school jumper. Wild shaggy blond hair ran to her waist. An open field lay before her out into the night of the full moon. The girl left her shoes behind and transformed into a short blond werewolf. She ran through the woods to a nearby park where she liked to hunt rabbits.
The rabbit squealed as the jaws took its neck. A quick twist snapped the spine ending the struggle. In the shadow of moonlight, Barbra's claws sliced open the rabbit, and a quick jerk of the fur pulled the hide off. She tossed the guts off into the bushes, and turned back to her human form as it was easier to eat. With a twist, she pulled a leg off and enjoyed her snack.
After, Barbra walked through the brush savoring her freedom. She turned to investigate a rustle of leaves in a nearby clearing. It was larger than a rabbit. She climbed a tree to get a better view. Balancing on a limb, she stared into the clearing.
Something moved in the leaves in a circle. Barbra saw a boy dressed in a suit and a cape. His arms raised to dance; by himself. She dropped behind him, headphones in his ears. He moved in time to the music in a 1-2-3 box step. As he came around, he stopped dancing when he saw Barbra. Startled, he lowered his arms, then slipped the headphones off.
"Tsk, What are you doing?" Barbra said with elbows bent and hands on her hips.
"The Waltz," He said.
"Why?" Barbra said.
"I'm Vincent Nasato. The Dark Cape, Vampire Hero and Man of Mystery," Vincent said smiling to show his fangs. Barbra rolled her eyes.
He held out a handkerchief, pointing to the blood and fur on her face.
"Your a messy eater," Vincent said.
Barbra swiped the handkerchief from Vincent’s hand.
"I can get by fine on my own," Barbra said as she wiped her face.
As the full moon set, Vincent escorted Barbra back to the school along the rooftops of the strip mall. It was the long way back.
"Tsk, You don't have to walk me back to school. I'm a lone wolf," Barbra said.
"We both go to Mecklenburg. It's the right thing to do," Vincent said.
"How are you going to get back?" Barbra said.
"I'll turn into a bat and fly," Vincent said.
"How often are you at the park?" Barbra said.
"During the full moon, the light is better," Vincent said.
Barbra stopped at the edge of the building to the sound of broken glass. A second crash and the two leaned over the edge of the rooftop. Black-clad men loaded bags into a waiting van deep in the alleyway. They wore helmets shaped like teeth.
"A burglary?" Vincent said.
"Lets get’em," Barbra said.
"Not a good idea," Vincent said as Barbra dropped into the alley.
Barbra came out of the shadows to punch a man in the stomach. He buckled over with a gasp for air. Vincent dropped to the ground, cape wide. The toothy henchmen turned to look at him. Barbra took advantage of the distraction to knock two of the men's heads together. Vincent jumped into the van to toss the bags out. The doors slammed shut, and the van drove off. Barbra held one of the men by the collar. With Vincent's face in the rear window, she watched the van as it drove off. Barbra dropped the henchman and ran after Vincent.
The toothy henchmen dragged Vincent to a dentist's chair in a white room. They buckled his wrists and ankles with leather straps. A tall man watched from the shadows.
"You tried to foil my plans. It was the perfect crime. Take the gold coins. Melt them into fillings. And do Super Dental work to once again prove my genius to the world," the man said.
"Doctor Enamel," Vincent said as the man stepped out of the shadows.
A henchman held a tray of dental tools. The Doctor picked a pair of silver dental pliers. A head mirror reflected light on the boy's jaw.
"Let us see those fangs," Doctor Enamel said.
The pliers neared Vincent's mouth. Barbra crashed through the window. The Doctor and henchmen stepped back from the flying glass. The werewolf landed next to the chair, and magical claws cut the wrist and ankle straps.
"You meddling little mutt!" Doctor Enamel said. Barbra punched him in the stomach. With a huff of breath, the Doctor doubled over.
Barbra pulled Vincent to run out of the evil dentist's office. They ran up a flight of stairs to the roof. The two ran to the ledge of the building only to find they were too far and too high to jump to the next rooftop.
Doctor Enamel and his toothy henchmen arrived at the top of the stairs. The Doctor held a staff-sized Dental Scaler.
Forward! My Toothy Henchmen!" Doctor Enamel said. Barbra turned and hopped on top of the ledge to fight the henchmen. She slipped, arms spinning to keep her balance. Vincent caught her jumper to pull her back from the edge.
Rudy Powers walked into the alley below. Hero Control had sent him out to look into the burglary. The tooth shaped Helmets were the first clue as to what happened. But it was not like the Doc to be sloppy. So he headed over to Doctor Enamel’s last known lair. Rudy saw the two kids on the roof. The wolf girl almost fell off.
They regenerate, Rudy thought.
He keyed his radio. "Control. Powers. I'm at Enamel's lair. Going in," Powers said.
With a step back, Rudy jumped the three floors to the rooftop. His feet landed with a thud of five hundred pounds. The wolf girl and Vincent were in a standoff with the henchmen. Everyone stepped back as Rudy landed between them. He walked over to the biggest henchman and flicked his finger to send the henchman flying. The other henchmen ran away. As Doctor Enamel turned to run, a hand snapped out to grab him by the collar.
As Rudy double-locked the handcuffs on Doctor Enamel, Barbra stuck her tongue out at him.
"I would have gotten away with it too if it wasn't for the wolf girl and her boyfriend," Doctor Enamel said.
“Yeah. Doc they got you this time,” Rudy said,
Vincent looked at Barbra, and her face flushed red. She looked away when Vincent looked at her.
"It's not like he's my boyfriend," Barbra said. Vincent looked down, then to his watch.
"Hey would you look at the time. We have to get going," Vincent said. He took Barbra's hand to lead her away.
"I'll talk to you tomorrow night Vincent," Rudy said.
Barbra returned to the park on the next full moon. Vincent turned the crank on a record player. Barbra stepped out of the shadows as Vincent set the needle. A waltz played. Vincent held out his hand.
"Would you like to dance?" Vincent said.
Barbra blushed but took his hand. "I would."
Vincent opened the car door to let Gyaru out. The black maxi dress came down to her ankles with a slide slit exposing one leg up to her hip. Vincent offered her his hand as she stood out of the car. The dress flowed like black water. His suit, a lighter fabric, had been cut to allow him to move.
Gyaru smiled as they walked into the swing club. It was salsa night. Big band music played. Vincent checked in with the reception desk. Gyaru walked over to the edge of the dance floor. A woman in red danced the salsa with a man in a gray suit.
"Veronica and Laz are here tonight, " Gyaru said as Vincent returned.
"They're back in town?" Vincent said.
"I let her know we’d be here," Gyaru said.
"Do you see any of her friends around?" Vincent said.
"No and I don't smell them either," Gyaru said.
"Good, their a bunch of soccer hooligans," Vincent said.
"You liked dancing with the Blond," Gyaru said.
"I prefer Blonds. But she’s more like a pole dancer. And last time she was trying to provoke you," Vincent said.
"Not going to happen. I can't be jealous of a cat girl. Oh The next set is starting," Gyaru said.
Vincent held out his hand. "Would you like to dance?" Vincent said.
"I would," Gyaru said.
