Chapter 2: Burn the Old, Become the New

Chapter 2: Burn the Old, Become the New

Mar 04, 2025

NEXT DAY

Kaisler woke up early, his body stiff from the awkward sleep on the couch. The air in the room was cool, but his mind burned with frustration, the remnants of his restless thoughts.

"I’ve never actually tested these useless shits properly," he muttered to himself, stretching his arms. A small wince crossed his face, but he ignored the pain. He extended a hand, summoning the thin, barely visible strings. They shimmered for a moment before vanishing into the air like strands of nothingness.

“How much weight can they hold? How many can I spawn? Where do they even come from? How visible are they? How fast can I move them?” The questions spiraled in his mind, gnawing at him like an itch he couldn’t scratch. His frustration deepened.

For too long, he had coasted through life, too comfortable in his ignorance, too wrapped up in the idea that his power was some untouchable mystery beyond human comprehension. The pride, the arrogance—it was all just holding him back.

That ended now.

These threads—whatever they were—would be his to control. His power. And he would break them down, study them, and push them beyond their limits.

Kaisler clenched his fist. His determination hardened like steel in his chest. It was time to start over.

He began small. His focus sharpened as he visualized the threads. Slowly, he willed three of them to appear. His fingertips tingled, a soft hum reverberating in his bones. The threads flickered to life, almost instantly, shimmering in the air like veins of silver against the light.

A brief surge of excitement rushed through him. It worked.

Then came the backlash.

A sharp, mind-numbing pressure slammed into his skull, like invisible hands pulling apart his brain, strand by strand. His vision blurred, and he staggered backward, nearly losing his balance.

“Shit...” He gripped his temples, his breath shallow and ragged.

So, that was the catch. It wasn’t about physical endurance—it was mental resilience. The more threads he summoned, the more it tore at his mind, unraveling him from the inside.

If he wanted to master this, to truly control it, he had to build resistance. He had to be stronger than the pain.

He focused again, attempting to summon more threads. His head throbbed, but this time, he tried to ignore the warning signs. The threads appeared again, flickering—then everything went dark.

Buddy shuffled into the room, his eyes half-closed, hair messy from sleep. He paused when he saw Kaisler crumpled on the floor, his body twitching slightly. With an exaggerated sigh, he walked over to the unconscious figure.

“Idiot…” Buddy muttered under his breath. “SARAH!”

Sarah stumbled into the room, rubbing her eyes, clearly annoyed. “What? It’s too early to be shouting this much…”

Buddy just nodded toward the floor. “He’s passed out.”

Sarah blinked, then blinked again. “Are you serious? The hell did he do this time?”

Buddy grinned, though his eyes held concern. “Dumbass tried pushing himself too hard. Should’ve known better.”

Sarah sighed. “You need me to help carry him?”

Buddy shook his head, standing up and adjusting Kaisler’s limp form. “Nah. I just need you to make breakfast. You’re the one who’s good at it.”

Sarah rolled her eyes, but her lips twitched into a slight smile. “Fine, whatever. I’ll do it.”

“Thanks,” Buddy muttered, hoisting Kaisler over his shoulder with ease.

As Buddy started carrying Kaisler out of the room, Sarah walked toward the kitchen, muttering, “You really should tell him to stop…”

Buddy looked back, narrowing his eyes. “Stop what? Training?”

“No. Just tell him to stop trying to become some multiverse explorer.” Her voice was tinged with worry. “It’s not safe, Buddy. He’s pushing himself too far.”

Buddy’s expression darkened for a moment, but his tone remained steady. “Are you high?”

Sarah stopped in her tracks, turning around to face him. “Excuse me? What the fuck do you mean by that?”

Buddy took a step forward, his voice quieter now but full of resolve. “I mean I’m not going to stop him. If he wants to do this, I’m not gonna deprive him of that. If this is what he wants, I’ll support him.”

“That’s bullshit,” Sarah shot back, her hands resting on her hips, her gaze sharp. “This isn’t something he can just ‘want.’ It’s dangerous, Buddy. You’ve seen the strain it puts on him. You can’t keep enabling this.”

Buddy’s face softened, but his stance didn’t waver. “Even so, he’s my friend. I’m not gonna pull the rug out from under him now. He’s been through worse than this—this training is nothing compared to what he’s already faced.”

Sarah’s gaze softened slightly, but the worry still lingered. “Does he look okay to you?”

Buddy didn’t respond right away. He glanced down at Kaisler’s limp body in his arms. The answer hung heavily between them. He couldn’t find the words to justify it.

Sarah exhaled sharply. “Exactly. You can’t even answer me.”

Buddy paused, his grip tightening just a bit on Kaisler as he spoke again, more firmly. “If he wants to do this, I’m not going to stop him. He deserves a choice in the matter.”

Sarah stared at him for a moment longer, her lips pressed into a thin line. She opened her mouth to say something, but then closed it. The silence between them was thick.

“Fine,” she muttered finally, walking toward the kitchen. “You’re so fucking stubborn…”

Buddy just sighed, carefully lowering Kaisler onto the couch. He paused for a moment, letting the tension settle. “Just stop. It’s his choice, Sarah.”

Kaisler’s eyes fluttered open, the faint light of morning filtering through the windows. His head throbbed like a drum, and his stomach churned with nausea. He groaned softly, raising a hand to his forehead, feeling the cool sweat that had gathered there.

“What the hell happened...?” he mumbled, still groggy.

His body ached from the strain, the lingering effects of the power he’d tried to control. The overwhelming pressure on his mind, the sheer weight of what he’d attempted—it had drained him. He barely remembered collapsing.

Buddy: “Good to see you’re still alive.”
Kaisler: “Yeah, well, barely.” He turned his head to meet Buddy’s eyes. “I think my brain's been shredded into a fine paste.”

Buddy: “You probably overdid it.” He stepped forward, holding a cup of water. “You need to take it easy for a while.”

Kaisler: “Food might help,” he mumbled, glancing toward the kitchen. The smell of bacon and eggs was already wafting in the air.

Buddy: “Sarah’s making breakfast.”

Kaisler: “Yeah, maybe...” He pushed himself up, his stomach still uneasy. “But I’m not stopping until I figure this out.”

Buddy: “Are you sure that’s a good idea right now? You nearly passed out trying to summon a few threads.”

Kaisler: “Just because I’m knocked out doesn’t mean I’ve given up.” His voice was low but firm. “I need to know how this power works. No more half-assed attempts. I’m done with that.”

In the Kitchen

Sarah had already set the table, two plates of eggs, bacon, and toast ready for them. She placed a glass of juice next to each plate, clearly annoyed but trying not to show it.

Kaisler sat down, gingerly at first, his stomach still uneasy. But the smell of food made his mouth water, and he dug in despite the lingering discomfort. He chewed slowly, his thoughts racing faster than his movements.

Sarah: “You know, you could at least take it easy.” She crossed her arms as she leaned against the counter. “You're not some invincible god, no matter how hard you train.”

Kaisler swallowed a mouthful of food, then glanced at her. “If I want to be anything close to that, I have to push myself. I can’t just sit around waiting for it to happen. I need to get stronger—faster.”

Sarah: “You’ve been reckless ever since you started this, and it’s gonna catch up with you. You’re alread

Kaisler: “I know, Sarah.” He cut her off, his tone quieter but more resolute. “But I’ve spent so long being afraid of pushing my limits. Now I need to know what I’m really capable of.”

The silence that followed was heavy. Buddy’s expression softened, but he didn’t argue. He’d known Kaisler long enough to see that when he got like this, there was no changing his mind.

Later, Outside

After breakfast, Kaisler excused himself, stepping outside onto the small balcony. The morning air was crisp, but the coolness didn’t do much to shake the heat building in his chest. He stared out at the horizon, his mind a storm of thoughts.

He couldn’t keep stumbling around in the dark with this power. He needed answers. He needed to control it, to push it farther than it had ever gone before.

He closed his eyes, focusing on the power inside him. The faint threads—his threads. He could feel them just beneath the surface of his consciousness, like a million tiny currents, waiting to be harnessed.

Kaisler extended his hand, fingers twitching, and the threads appeared again. They flickered into existence like ghostly veins of silver, hovering in the air around him. This time, he didn’t recoil from the pressure. He welcomed it, focused on it.

Kaisler: “More. I need to do more.”

He summoned more threads. His vision blurred, but he fought to keep his focus. The threads expanded, growing longer, stretching through the air like living tendrils. The strain in his mind grew unbearable, but Kaisler clenched his teeth, holding on.

Kaisler: “I won’t stop. Not now.”

Finally, when his vision was on the edge of blacking out, he let the threads dissipate. He collapsed to his knees, his breath ragged, heart pounding, but for the first time since he’d discovered this power, he felt like he was on the right track.

Later, Inside

Buddy and Sarah had been watching from the window, silent as Kaisler collapsed to the ground after his latest training session. Sarah’s face showed concern, but Buddy’s eyes were filled with a mix of worry and pride.

Sarah: “I told him to take it easy.” She muttered, her arms crossed tightly. “But he’s not listening.”

Buddy didn’t respond right away. He watched as Kaisler slowly got to his feet, his legs unsteady but his determination unwavering.

Buddy: “Don’t you think he’s getting somewhere?” His voice was quiet but sure. “It’s reckless, sure. But I can see it in his eyes. He’s not going to stop until he figures it out.”

Sarah: “I’m not saying he should stop. But he’s pushing himself too hard—too fast.” She replied, her voice tinged with frustration. “He needs to pace himself.”

Buddy shrugged. “You can’t hold him back from this. If he wants to do it, if he’s willing to suffer to get stronger, I’ll let him. He has to choose his own path.”

Sarah sighed but didn’t argue. “You’re just as stubborn as he is.”

NEXT DAY

kaisler wakes up early in his mind he has set 1 week including yestarday to be able to summon 100 strings and control them yestarday he found out that they could hold anything and it doesn't really have a limit to how much damge or lifting strenth the promblem comes when he lifts them up as summoning them takes a huge toll on his mentel lifing things devides his conceness and is ripping it apart for as fast same thing it can go as fast as his minds lets it without breaking his mind and killing him something interesting that he found out was he could make it spawn from any where weather the floor they sky any where but the futher it is the weeker he feels this time it drains it stamina other than his mental

Kaisler thought to himself, "Okay, today I’ll start small. I’ll try to pick up 20kg of. If I can do that, it’ll be a major improvement—at least a step forward.

But… won’t that put too much strain on my brain? Is it worth the risk? Is the payoff really that good?

And how can I improve their speed? If I think faster, will they move faster? How do I make them stretch farther? Do I need to build my stamina so I can extend them without draining myself?"

His mind raced with possibilities. He needed answers.

He summoned three almost invisible threads, realizing he could make them more or less visible depending on how much energy he put into them. The more visible they were, the less strain it took, but that also diminished the element of surprise—something crucial in combat. If they could see the threads coming, they could dodge them. On the other hand, making them invisible would allow him to take anyone by surprise. Maybe, if they were invisible, they could bypass someone’s precognition ability. The world was strange, full of so many different abilities that seemed to mix and match in unpredictable ways.

Kaisler: "Yo, Buddy, check this out. I figured out how to control three of these shits. It hurts like hell, but I can control 'em now."

Buddy (walking in, smirking): "Finally. Took you long enough."

Kaisler (sitting down on a chair, rolling his eyes): "Dumbass, but yeah."

Kaisler stretched out his hand and summoned three very visible threads, watching as they flickered into existence. He effortlessly moved them around, stretching them out to ten meters, and pushed them at a quick 20mph.

Buddy (eyes widening): "What the fuck? Yesterday, you were barely able to move them. Now you’re stretching 'em ten meters, and they’re moving that fast? That’s pretty solid for someone as ‘stunted’ as you. But, for an explorer, that’s slow as fuck. Also—why are they glowing? Last time, they were barely visible."

Kaisler: “I mean, it’s hard to explain.”

Buddy: “Explain it, dumbass.”

Kaisler: “So basically, I can summon up to ten now, and the more visible they are, the less mental strain it takes. But... the more visible they are, the easier it is for anyone to dodge ‘em.”

Buddy: “So you're basically useless.”

Kaisler: “How?”

Buddy: “If they can see it, you’re done. They can anticipate it.”

Kaisler: “But I can summon them from up to ten meters now. Imagine summoning ten from the floor—all with the power to lift 20kg, pull someone's leg down, then carry a knife and cut their head off.”

Buddy (raising an eyebrow): “Are you dumb? They can react fast enough to counter it.”

Kaisler: “No, they fucking can’t.”

Buddy (smirking): “Try it against me.”

Kaisler: “Bro, I won’t try it against you.”

Buddy: “Why not?”

Kaisler: “Aren’t you top ten in the fucking multiverse explorers?”

Buddy: “I’m top 2.”

Kaisler: “Exactly. It would be useless against you.”

Buddy: “So what?”

Kaisler: “You can create and destroy your own multiverse, move at immeasurable speed—how the fuck is this fair?”

Buddy (shrugging): “So what? Just lock the fuck in.”

Kaisler: “I hate you so much.”

Buddy: “Me too, bro. Just admit it—you’re too scared to try me.”

Kaisler: “Try me, dumbass.”
