Iris
I opened Jade's drawer and took out a T-shirt to replaced the one I wore earlier in the morning when the incident occurred. Looking at the shirt on the floor, I saw what seemed to burn marks on it, and holes from where the fire would've burnt through. I took it up, and took outside of the room, throwing it in the trash can in the kitchen.
"You sure this is a good idea?" Jade asked, holding Sadie's hand. I looked at Sadie, who was holding a stuffed bear in her hand, and had a small bag filled with clothes on her back. I looked away and sighed, covering my face and sliding my hands down my face until they were covering my mouth.
"Listen," I said, trying to keep calm, but feeling panic boil up in my chest, "Some fucked up thing is happening in the world, and out of nowhere, people just spontaneously combusted during a storm last night that appeared out of nowhere. It's better and safer if you come down to the broadcast station with me, instead of staying here, because if anything happens to you, I'll be able to take care of Sadie. And it sure as hell doesn't make any sense staying here because there's-"
I stopped myself and looked at Sadie, who looked confused. Part of me wanted to tell her what happened to her mother, but I knew it would break her poor little heart. Unless she found out already, and watched everything go down last night.
"There's a chance something could happen and I can't help any of you."
Jade nods and grabs my keys from the counter, and her duffel bag from the table.
"Grab whatever else you want. We'll be in the car."
I nodded and watched as they walked out of the house, and when they were out of my line of sight, headed towards the bedroom, where the body was. Looking at it, my body shook in fear. I bit back the bile that rose up in my throat and knelt down to look at the body, staring at the unrecognizable face.
Walking back into the house, I took a sheet from the closet, and threw it aside on the ground. Seconds later, with some difficulty, I covered the body fully with the cloth. Turning to leave, I heard my name being called. Looking back, I saw the sheet still on the ground, hopefully with the corpse still under it. Turning away, I moved towards the front door, but heard a whisper of my name again, which prompted me to grab a knife from the kitchen.
"Who's there?" I shouted, moving slowly towards the door, looking around for any sign of life.
But nothing came out into the open. No mysterious monster, no person or creature coming to attack me. Just me, and the empty air of the house.
Turning, I walked outside, and started moving towards the car, closing and locking the door. Fixing the rearview mirror, I looked in the backseat and saw Jade and Sadie leaning on each other, eyes closed.
I couldn't bear to see any of the two of them suffer the same fate their mother did. The thought of either of them bursting into a ball of fire like their mother. But I didn't know what plans the universe held in it's hands. Maybe I could be next. Who knows...
I started the car and backed out of the driveway, and started heading towards the town, and hopefully towards somewhere safer.
