Threads of Vengeance

The Invitation

The Invitation

Mar 09, 2025

Moments later,
At The Eternal Night Café,

Eliot Aston stepped into the coffee shop, immediately struck by the atmosphere. The dim lighting, dark walls, and heavy goth decor made the place feel like it belonged to a different world entirely. The air was thick with the smell of rich espresso and something else - something faintly intoxicating.

It wasn’t quite a coffee shop; it was a statement. Eternal Night - the name alone made Eliot feel like an outsider, but he didn’t have the luxury of feeling out of place. Damien had chosen this spot, and that was all that mattered.

Eliot scanned the room for Damien and saw him sitting in a shadowed corner booth. As always, Damien looked impeccably put together - tailored black suit, dark shirt, his hair styled with an almost obsessive precision. He looked the same as always, and yet there was something unsettling in his demeanor today.

It wasn’t just the coldness in his eyes - it was the almost predatory smile that played on his lips when he saw Eliot approach.

Eliot took a seat across from him, trying to maintain his composure despite the overwhelming sense that he was walking into a trap.

"Nice place," Eliot said, his voice measured as he glanced around. "Very... you."

Damien chuckled softly, his gaze never leaving Eliot.

"It does have a certain charm, doesn’t it? Though, I’m sure you’re not here for the ambiance."

Eliot tightened his jaw but didn’t respond. He wasn’t in the mood for Damien’s games today. The events of the past few days had already worn him thin - Lily’s disappearance, the investigation, his own guilt - and now, this.

A meeting in a place like this, where nothing was as it seemed.

Damien leaned forward slightly, the light from the candles casting a stark shadow on his face.

"Tell me, Eliot, how does it feel to know that your wife is gone? That everything you thought you had... is slipping away?"

Eliot’s breath caught, but he didn’t flinch.

"You don’t know a damn thing about my life, Damien."

A slow smile crept onto Damien’s lips.

"I know enough. I know about your little affair with Eloise. I know about your mistakes. It’s almost sad, don’t you think? All that money, all that power - and yet you couldn’t even hold on to the one thing that mattered."

The jab stung, but Eliot forced himself to remain calm. He wasn’t going to let Damien get under his skin.

Not today... or tonight rather.

"You really like to stir the pot, don’t you?" Eliot muttered, keeping his eyes locked on Damien. "Tell me why I’m really here."

Damien's eyes gleamed, amusement flickering in the depths. He leaned back in his seat, his fingers tracing the rim of his coffee cup.

"I thought we could have a conversation, Eliot. Get to know each other better. You see, I'm getting married soon."

Eliot's brow furrowed.

"Married?"
Damien's smile widened. "Yes. To someone hundred times better than Eloise. It's a wonderful thing, really. Two people coming together for the perfect... partnership. It's almost poetic, don't you think?"

Eliot's mind raced. He couldn't quite place why, but something about this felt all wrong.

"And you're telling me this because...?"
Damien chuckled, the sound low and almost mocking.

"Because I want you to come to the reception. It's going to be quite the event. A night to remember. I'd love for you to be there."

Eliot stared at Damien, his gut twisting with unease. A wedding reception? It didn't make sense.

Why would Damien want him there?

Was this some sort of power move?

A way to remind him of his place in this twisted game Damien had been playing all along?

"You think I'm going to attend your wedding reception?" Eliot asked, his voice low with disbelief.

Damien leaned in closer, his eyes narrowing.

"I do. Because I know you, Eliot. I know you'll be there. You always have to be a part of the story, even when you don't want to be."

Just then, Eliot's phone buzzed on the counter. He glanced at the screen and saw a text from an unknown number.

"Where is Lily? I know she isn't dead!!!" the text read.

Eliot's heart skipped a beat. Who was this? And how did they know about Lily?

Damien's eyes flicked to the phone, a hint of a smile playing on his lips.

"Ah, I see you're getting messages about Lily. That's quite... interesting."

Eliot's eyes narrowed.

"What do you know about Lily?"

Damien leaned back in his seat, a look of innocence on his face.

"Oh, I don't know anything about Lily. But I do know that she was kidnapped by one of your enemies, Eliot. Someone who wants to hurt you, to destroy everything you hold dear."

Eliot's eyes widened in shock.

"What are you talking about?"

Damien smiled, a cold, calculating smile.

"I'm talking about the people who want to bring you your business partners down, Eliot. The people who will stop at nothing to destroy you. And I'm afraid Lily is just a pawn in their game."

Eliot's mind reeled as Damien handed him a neat piece of paper with a list of names on it.

"These are the people who might be involved in Lily's kidnapping," Damien said, his voice dripping with sincerity. "I thought you might want to... investigate."

Eliot's eyes scanned the list, his heart sinking with each name. There were people on this list that he had considered friends, allies. But now, he wasn't so sure.

"What's going on, Damien?" Eliot asked, his voice low and deadly.

Damien's smile widened, his eyes glinting with amusement.

"Oh, Eliot. You're so predictable. You always think you're in control, but you're not. You're just a pawn in a much larger game. And I'm afraid Lily is just the beginning."

As Eliot's eyes locked onto Damien's, he knew that he was in for the fight of his life. He would stop at nothing to find Lily, to bring her home safe and sound. And he would make sure that Damien paid if he had a role in her disappearance.

The game was on.

Damien leaned back in his chair clearly enjoying himself, his movements fluid and calculated.

"So, I'll see you on Friday, Eliot. Don't forget, the reception is at 8 pm. You wouldn't want to miss it."

The words hit like a slap to the face. Eliot didn’t want to admit it, but Damien was right. He couldn’t stay away.

Not from this world.

Not from this game.

"Fine," Eliot said, forcing himself to speak through the tension that seemed to hang thick in the air. "I’ll come."

Damien’s smile deepened, satisfaction clearly written on his face.

"Good. You’ll be there, and you’ll learn something important. Something that will make it all... make sense."

Eliot stood up abruptly, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. "I don’t know what your game is, Damien, but I’m not afraid of you."

His words were firm, though his pulse quickened. He felt like he was being dragged deeper into a web that was far too tangled for him to untangle. He wasn’t prepared for whatever this reception was going to turn into, but he had no choice but to play along.

Damien’s gaze followed him, unblinking. "We’ll see. But be careful, Eliot. There’s more at stake than you think."

Eliot turned and walked away from the table, his mind racing with a thousand thoughts. He’d accepted the invitation, but he wasn’t sure what he’d gotten himself into.

He knew Damien was dangerous, but this?

This felt different.

Like a chess match where the stakes were higher than he could have imagined.

Later, alone in his apartment, Eliot poured himself a drink, his hands shaking slightly as the amber liquid filled his glass. The invitation to Damien’s wedding reception lingered in his thoughts like an ominous cloud. He couldn’t understand why Damien had invited him.

He’d already lost Lily — what more was there to take from him?

His phone buzzed on the counter. Eliot didn’t need to check the screen to know who it was.

The text was brief, but it carried with it a weight that made Eliot’s heart skip.

"8PM. Don’t be late."

Eliot set the phone down, a feeling of foreboding settling deep in his chest. The reception was Friday night.

And somehow, in the back of his mind, he knew that the events of that evening would set off a chain reaction — one that he wouldn’t be able to stop.
