Chapter 17: Chaos

Aya walked through the bustling streets of the city, enjoying the gentle evening breeze. In her hands, she carried the basket of fruit given to her in gratitude at the clinic. She felt satisfied—today, she had truly helped people.

"You're proud of yourself, aren’t you?"—Leticia’s voice echoed in her mind with a hint of amusement, sensing Aya’s joyful mood.

— Shouldn’t I be? — Aya replied with a smile. — We helped so many people.

"Yes, and we also learned that Light Magic is far more powerful than Healing Magic,"—Leticia added.

— By the way, I wanted to ask. What exactly is this card?

"It’s the most annoying thing in our world,"—Leticia answered with clear irritation.—"Without it, you have no right to use magic or apply it in any official capacity."

— So, it's like an ID card in my world, — Aya calmly noted.

"Wait, you have a similar system in your world?"—Leticia asked, incredulously.

— Yes, we do, — Aya replied just as calmly.

Aya explained to Leticia about ID cards and passports, how they worked, and why they were so important.

"I see… Without them, it’s like you don’t exist, or you’re considered a criminal illegally staying in the country. Interesting…"—Leticia pondered over Aya’s words.

Aya realized Leticia was lost in thought and continued walking.

"Aya, tell me,"—Leticia cautiously spoke again, "since your world doesn’t have magic, then how…"

Suddenly, Aya heard a dull sound, like a distant hammer striking stone. She froze, listening intently.

— Did you hear that? — she asked in her thoughts.

"Hear what?"—Leticia returned from her musings. "Never mind, I wanted to ask what kinds of…"

Aya frowned, thinking she had imagined it, and continued walking. But a moment later, the sound came again—louder and clearer this time. Now Leticia heard it too.

"That wasn’t just an explosion…"—Leticia muttered. "It sounded like…"

Before Leticia could finish, a third strike came—so powerful that the ground trembled beneath their feet. The force of the impact was so strong that Aya lost her balance.

A deafening crack echoed through the city as one of the nearby buildings began to collapse. Pieces of the walls crumbled, raising thick clouds of dust. The sharp scent of smoke and debris filled the air. People started screaming—some calling for help, others simply running in terror. Somewhere nearby, a child cried out for his mother. Panic swallowed the streets, trapping people like prey.

"Combat magic?! Aya, we need to get out of here!"—Leticia’s voice shouted in Aya’s head.

Aya looked around. Buildings were covered in flames, rubble was scattered everywhere. She got to her feet and started running, but then her gaze fell on the wounded. Several people were trapped under the debris, others lay on the ground in shock, helpless and afraid. The air smelled of blood and burning wood, and thick dust filled her lungs.

"Aya, why did you stop?!"—Leticia practically screamed. "We have to get out of here! It’s not safe!"

Aya saw. She turned toward the source of destruction and realized—it was a battle. She didn’t know who was fighting or why. Waves of power rippled through the streets, leaving only chaos in their wake. This was something she couldn’t fight against.

But Aya couldn’t just leave.

She rushed to the nearest victim, her heart pounding in her chest. Dust choked her throat, but she ignored it. Her hands trembled as she touched the bloodied skin.

— Leticia, — Aya’s voice trembled, — what happens if I run away?

Leticia hesitated at the question, but after a moment, she understood what Aya meant.

"Aya… you’re not planning to…"

Leticia never finished—she felt Aya’s resolve.

— I’m sorry, Leticia, — Aya whispered in her thoughts. — I can’t just leave them like this.

She ran to the first victim—a man pinned under the rubble. His breathing was ragged, his face slick with sweat. Aya carefully placed her hands on his chest, and warmth began to flow from her, wrapping around his body. He shuddered, then his breathing steadied.

Aya moved to the next. Then another. And another. But something was wrong.

This time, the wounds were healing more slowly than before. Aya clenched her teeth, focusing harder. She moved to the next injured person—a woman with a deep wound on her leg—and again, she felt that her magic wasn’t working as efficiently.

— Why is it so slow?! — she whispered in panic.

"You’re exhausting yourself,"—Leticia stated coldly. "There are too many wounded. You can’t heal everyone. Leave them to others."

But Aya didn’t listen. Her heart pounded against her ribs. Her resolve didn’t waver. And as she began to channel all of her strength, she felt something inside her.

A tiny spark.

Small, but warm. Aya, without even realizing it, reached for this tiny, warm spark.

Heat flared inside her, and the light flowing from her hands suddenly intensified. Now, it didn’t just stream—it engulfed her entire body, forming a radiant aura.

"Aya! What’s happening?!"—Leticia tried to reach her, but her voice was drowned out by the roar of energy.

The injured began to regain consciousness. They breathed heavily, their eyes clouded with exhaustion. But one thing they saw clearly—the girl, glowing like the sun, her face veiled, her hands radiating light like the roots of a great tree, healing those around her.

Some of them fell to their knees, hands clasped in prayer.

— A-an angel… — a man gasped, staring in awe.

— An angel has descended to save us!

— We are saved!

Hearing the shouts, more people arrived to help, but when they saw the sight before them, they were stunned.

Ragged, dirt-covered people, stained with blood and dust, knelt around the glowing girl.

For a moment, they were speechless.

Then, the sound of explosions and distant battle cries brought them back to reality. They snapped out of their daze and began helping others evacuate.

But Aya didn’t notice them. She was focused on saving as many as she could. She had decided—she would keep healing until her strength was completely drained.

Meanwhile, in the heart of the city, a knight and a mage fought a battle to the death.
