I Thought I Will Train Regarding My Power But I Ended Up Tending A Dagashi Shop - First Task
Thoth received a name made by Shirayuki and started their training for the approaching battle with the evil that wanted to usurp the world and caused destruction. Though, he decided to just be a guide in her training.
- EARTH - TAKUYA DAGASHI SHOP (YEAR XX00, JUNE - SUMMER) -
Shirayuki was in sweat and currently working in a dagashi near a shrine. She applied for that part-time job as per Ryouta's request for her training.
Shirayuki finished cleaning the front of the shop and looked inside where there was a sleeping old man. That made her a little bit irritated but she just heaved a sigh.
“Ryouta said that this is a part of training but it looks like I'm just tending this shop replacing that lazy old man. Tch,” she said in the air.
In the middle of her silent complaint, a group of kids entered the shop which she noticed so she welcomed them.
“Nee-chan, are you new here? It's our first time seeing you here,” one of the kids commented.
“Yes. I'm a new part-timer here. I just started working today. I'm Shirayuki, nice to meet you all.”
“Hmmm... then, you're probably lucky because you started working,” he said with a smile. “It's not that famous or known in this place but Oji-san is good and kind-hearted. He always gives us free snacks if we don't have money.”
“Eh? Are you for real? That old man you're talking to is currently sleeping and letting this first time worker tend the shop. First day slave.”
“Then, let's grab some ice pops.” They went to the chest freezer to get their ice pops.
Shirayuki followed them as she was also curious about them. When they looked inside, they all noticed that it was not that cold. Shirayuki found it odd and checked the thermostat and cable but she didn't notice anything.
The kids felt disappointed. As a part-timer, Shirayuki couldn't let her customers feel discomfort with their service and products.
“Ahhh... for the meantime, put your payments on the counter and I will get you your ice pops. I remember that old man—I mean, Oji-san, put some in the refrigerator inside the shop.” She tried to compromise with a lie.
“Really, Nee-chan? Let's go!” They cheerfully went inside the shop.
Now, Shirayuki didn't know what to do because she said those words out of nowhere. There was no such thing as a freezer inside the shop. While in the middle of figuring out what to do, she accidentally touched the chest freezer making the place she touched froze, much to her surprise.
“Ahhh! I'm panicking so my powers are leaking. Geez!” she said out of frustration.
“Wait... first, why wasn't this freezer got cold if it was activated since early in the morning... hmmm... is it really acting up.”
She touched the ice formed inside and noticed that it was easily melting. Then, an idea appeared in her mind and she smirked evilly.
“I see. So, I can do that.” She picked up four ice pops. “Freeze.”
The liquid ice pops froze making her a little bit happy as she went inside the shop. She saw those kids waiting for her at the counter.
“Nee-chan, did you get some ice pops?” one asked her.
“Yes, luckily. Here.” She handed them their ice pops, much to their joy.
“Thanks, Nee-chan!” They happily went out of the shop making Shirayuki feel good.
“Okay, if that freezer is acting up, let's freeze up everything.”
Shirayuki opened the chest freezer wide before looking inside, trying to picture what she will do. Then, she looked around to reassure that there would be no one to see her.
“Then, let's do it.” She opened her hands to the freezer and closed her eyes. “Freeze everything.”
With her command, a cold mist was released from her hand and enveloped the products. It took about a few seconds to finish and she opened her eyes to look at the result.
“Success!”
She decided to go inside the shop and manned the counter. From time to time, she was glancing at the owner who was still sleeping but she was just causing herself to feel disappointed. About several minutes passed in a silent hot afternoon when he woke up and looked at the counter.
“Oh? You're doing your work.”
“And you're not.”
“It's so hot this summer,” he commented.
He decided to go outside to breathe some fresh air. He also looked at his goods and the chest freezer outside.
“Tch. This old man. Suit yourself. I solved one of your problems earlier,” she whispered.
“Oi! What happened to the freezer?!” he hysterically asked.
“Hmmm... it was acting up so—”
“Why are the goods as hard as blocks of ice?!”
Shirayuki was surprised to hear those words so she rushed outside and approached the chest freezer. She touched ice formed inside and noticed that it got fixed.
“This ice cream is as hard as stone. No one will buy it,” the old man showed it to her.
“It's all my fault, I think.”
“We need to close it and let this defrost overnight. It's unfortunate that it will be in demand now that Summer is here.” The old man closed the freezer and put an out of order mark.
Shirayuki felt bad about what she did so she bowed down to him and apologized many times, much to the old man's surprise.
“There's no need for that. This freezer is really old so it's probably acting up. Let's just let it rest for a while,” he replied before going inside the shop.
“I can't tell him that I used my power to solve that problem.”
Shirayuki just decided to go inside too and she found him sleeping again which she just ignored as she was still feeling bad about what she did.
“Yow, coming in!!! Oh? Isn't it Shirayuki-chan.” Ryouta entered the shop. “And Oji? As expected, he was sleeping.”
“What are you doing here, Ryouta?” Shirayuki asked.
“Is it wrong to enter a dagashi shop. Of course, I will buy something.” He went near the sleeping old man.
“Oh, Ryou-kun. Is that you?” The old man woke up and looked at Ryouta.
“Yow, Oji! Sleeping again?”
“They're already buddy-buddy. Well, Ryouta is the one who made me work here so it's not surprising if he knew this old man.”
“Shirayuki-chan, can you make some delivery?” Ryouta asked.
“Delivery? This shop is doing delivery?!”
“If you would, Shirayuki-chan. There are two boxes inside and there is an address there on where to deliver,” the old man requested.
“Okay, I'm your part-timer, after all. And wait! What's with -chan? I'm not a kid!” she replied before going inside.
“Don't mind her, Oji. She's just too stubborn,” Ryouta commented.
Shirayuki did the deliveries leaving the two alone. Ryouta faced the old man who was yawning like he didn't have enough sleep.
“You're always sleeping now, Oji,” Ryouta commented. “Your shop will go down in red if you don't straighten up yourself.”
“You seemed like an old man with the way you talk. You're just a kid but you know your words,” the old man replied as he laughed.
“Well, I'm not a kid anymore, Oji. So, how was Shirayuki-chan doing her job?” Ryouta wondered.
“That girl is quite stubborn as you said but she was doing her job right. Even though it was her first day, she did everything she could to satisfy the customers. She solved the problem in her own way even though she did too much,” he explained causing Ryouta to smile.
“She is just being as she is. She might be too much to handle but she didn't give up or wave the white flag easily. Shirayuki-chan will do her best and I can assure you that,” Ryouta replied with confidence.
“Don't worry, I know her when she was still a little kid. She's been like that since then. Some things were not changing, I guess.”
“I see. I see.” Ryouta looked at the door.
“How about you Ryou-kun? Something is going on, right?” He was surprised when he heard the old man say those things.
“Oh? You know it, Oji.”
“Well, I'm just an old man waiting for his end of line.”
“Don't say that sad thing. You still have the strength to sleep all day, Oji,” he joked.
“That was an alone old man can do in his day. Sleeping makes me dream of things that I wish to experience in my life. Sleeping just makes me escape this reality,” the old man answered.
“Okay you said it. But if you dream for long, let me know so I can give you something in your journey,” he said before giving a bitter smile.
“Don't worry, I will,” the old man promised.
