Mischievous Fox

The voices in my head are liars

The voices in my head are liars

Mar 23, 2025

“Let’s go.” Ethan follows me but Myra hesitates.

“Right now?” I nod. “Till and his family shouldn’t be home at the moment.” Her face hardens but she follows. Ethan is also oddly quiet, but I don’t mind. Peace for once.

We arrive at the house though we stay on the opposite street in a dark alleyway. The house is ugly. Should have pawned off the stolen things maybe then his house wouldn’t look like a drunk person built it. I take a mask and gloves and put them on. I also give the others some. I end up taking a black jacket out and pull the hood over my head. The other two get simple black caps. Now we look suspicious as fuck.

“Do you always carry stuff like this with you in case you need to break into someplace?” Myra looks like she might call the police earlier than planned.

“No, I don’t.” Ethan gets stars in his eyes. I don’t want another rant please. The only reason I have these things with me is because I packed them into my bag last night. That sounds like I wanted to break into some place I admit but it’s not the reason I did that.

We cross the street and I look inside the windows and it looks clear. The car is also gone.

See we weren’t lying for once the voices say with pride. Yes, yes, I’m sorry- wait for once!!

My God! take a joke. I take a deep breath in and out. I go to the back door making sure no retired grandmas or grandpas are stalking the streets again.

“Are you sure it’s safe to do this in the middle of the day?” Ethan asks me

“How should I know?”

Myra and Ethan share a look before following me. The backdoor is locked. I consider how to open it without leaving evidence of a break in. This is annoying. I huff. This wouldn’t be hard to open if I had the right tools, but I don’t even have a hair pin on me. I wish they forgot to lock it. Trying a second time I turn the handle, and the door actually opens. That’s weird. I was sure that it was locked. Shrugging I walk inside. The inside is surprisingly better than the outside.

His room is upstairs. The voices direct me.

I don’t walk upstairs instead I spend a few minutes downstairs checking each room while Ethan and Myra trail behind me. Finally, I walk upstairs. There are only three doors. I pick the one on the right. I walk inside.

“I’m guessing that this is his room.”

Myra and Ethan immediately start looking for the stolen things. His room doesn’t look special at all. Nothing really caught my attention until I turned to the right and saw something similar to a shrine. Curiously I walk towards it. It doesn’t have much. There seems to be a book about different gods and myths. It looked rather heavy. You could definitely give someone a concussion with this.

My how brutal. The voices jump.

I ignore them and move on to the next item. There are some candles. They smell rather good. Cherries. My favourite. In the middle of the shrine sat a wooden figure. I take it. It’s rather light. From the looks of it it’s hallow inside though there is something in there, but I can’t tell what it is. The figure itself is pretty well made. It’s a cute fox in a sitting position with its tail wrapped around its feet. Looking around again I can see the carving materials lying neatly on his desk on the other side of the room.

Looking around the room a second time I note how neat it is. I didn’t really expect that considering his personality. Especially him worshipping gods. Weren’t you supposed to be a good person if you worshipped them or something? I can’t really remember what the rules were. Were there even rules? I shake my head and turn back to the wooden fox. It truly is pretty, and I really want to take it. Such a pity that it would alarm Till that someone was in his room.

“Why are you pouting?” Myras voices startles me, and I turn around seeing her looking at me judgementally.

“I’m not pouting.”

“Sure, you aren’t. Why are you standing there though? I hardly think that I put the stolen things there.”

“Oh! Is there something interesting? What did you find?” Ethan jumps besides me and looks at the statue in my hands.

“Is that a fox? How cute!”

I simply hum in agreement putting it back from where I got it.

“Well while you two are fangirling over some fox I found the stolen things. You are welcome.” Myra informs us while pulling a box with various things out of the closet. The closet it on the left side of the room right next to the bed.

“Good job!” Ethan goes to Myra to do something. I don’t know or care. I turn back to the shrine and take the book. It is thick and has a beautiful grey-blue cover. The title “Gods and their myth” are in gold. It also has various golden decorations on it. I open a random page in the middle.

It talks about the god of death. A few pages farther talk about the god of fortune. I continue and find a page that looks more worn than the others. Till seems to be reading this one a lot. The god of foxes.  I look to the statue. I’m guessing he has a favourite. A feel a hand tugging at my arm. I turn and see Ethan besides me again.

“Look! We found his phone! That idiot must have forgotten it.” I take it. It has a black phone case and a few scratches. I open it without trouble.

“No password?” I wonder out loud. Ethan gives me a weird look. I turn my attention to the phone. I go to his messages. Most appear normal but there are a few incriminating ones talking about committing various crimes such as stealing, beating people up and other things. I go to his gallery next and find a lot of photos. He really gathered the evidence for us. This way we can prove not only his but also the others involvement.

“Put it back from where you found it. We solved the mystery now we can call the police.”

“And you are sure we had to break into his house to find these things out. Aren’t you supposed to be all knowing.” Myra looks at me with thinly veiled mistrust and judgement.

“First of all, maybe I don’t really care since it was fun. Secondly, I never claimed to be all knowing he suddenly started spouting bullshit.” I point my finger at Ethan.

“Because you are!”

“I’m really not.”

I huff and ignore whatever else is exchanged. Without saying anything I give Ethan the phone back and put the book back from where I got. From the corner of my eyes, I can see that Ethan has yet to move.

“What’s the matter?” He doesn’t immediately answer me instead he keeps looking through a couple things on Tills phone. After multiple minutes Ethan finally answers.

“Till doesn’t seem to be that bad.”

I raise an eyebrow waiting for Ethan to explain. He shoots me a nervous look before continuing.

“It’s just appears as if he was pressured to join in all these activities. You know peer pressure or whatever.” Ethan bites his lips looking unsure. I don’t think I have ever seen him at a loss for words. Thought to be fair I have only known him for a couple days? Or has it already been weeks? I can’t really remember but why should I care for how long I have known someone.

“So?”

“Well, he could change or when the actual perpetrators are-”

“He is a true perpetrator as well. Who cares if he was pressured to do it. In the end it was still his decision.”

“It’s not that simple! That’s way too cold.”

I shrug

“Either way it’s not my problem. The police can decide how guilty he is.”

Ethan opens his mouth to protest again but I put my hand over his mouth preventing him to talk. I look to the shrine.

“Do you want him to take no blame? For him to walk away from this scratch free?”

Ethan looks away.

“I just don’t want to be responsible for destroying or tainting anyone’s life.” Humans are so complicated. I shake my head.

“You won’t.” He looks at me surprised.

“I’m going to be the one who reports this and everything that happens after that will be their own fault.” Ethan nods looking unsure. Suddenly his eyes grow wide and he jerks away from the door. A few seconds later a noise comes from downstairs and distant voices can be heard.

“I thought they weren’t supposed to be home.” Myra whispers to me annoyed and a little panicked. She is right. What are they doing home? Were the voices wrong or did they intentionally lie? You fucking liars told me they weren’t home.

They weren’t. Don’t accuse us of shit. The voices huff offended

You could have told me that they were coming home!

Where is the fun in that? Besides who care.

“What kind of useless omniscient person are???” Myra is still complaining.

“I already told you none at all!”

We look around frantically. I spot a window next to Tills bed. I walk to it.

“Don’t even think about it. We are currently on the second floor.” Myra shoots me a glare.

“Why are you so chatty today.” I glare back at her.

The window is definitely big enough for us to climb out of and there is a convenient tree which we can climb.

“Hurry up.” I urge them. Myra does not need to be told twice despite her earlier protest she is faster down the tree than I can look. Why was she complaining? I get ready to climb out when I see Ethan not moving.

“Funny story. You see I don’t really like hights ha ha…” Ethan looks pale but still laughs. The voices are still talking.

“It’s fine nothing will happen. I promise.” There that helps people, right? Ethan doesn’t look any better.

“I will catch you if anything happens!” Myra calls up to us. I worry that it was too loud. But nothing happens. I take Ethans hand and drag him to the window. He is halfway out of it when I notice the phone still clutched in his hands. I quickly that it startling Ethan. I mutter a quick apology before putting the phone on his bed.

Ethan is already on the tree clinging to it like a scared cat. I go out the window as well. It took longer than I would have liked but I managed to get both Ethan and I on the ground. We all start running as fast as we can. When we are a safe distance away from the house we stop. Ethan is doubling over and breathing very heavily. My condition is similar, so I feel pity for him.

However, I quickly start laughing. I loss my breath from hard I’m laughing.

“What’s wrong with you? Do you not care that we could have gotten caught? Don’t you want to become a detective? I doubt that crimes such as breaking and entering would endear you to-”

“I will be fine.” I wave her off.

“You take things too lightly. Even if you do not care what happens to you this will also impact Ethan and I.”

I title my head. I’m pretty sure I have heard this somewhere before. Well, who cares. More importantly why is Myra so hostile. Sure, she didn’t really seem to like me before but now instead of the indifference in her eyes there is something else. Not hatred but rather fear. I title my head. How curious. I shake my head.

“Are you okay? You have been doing that quite a bit today. You kind of look like a dog that is trying to shake water out of their fur. Or rather a fox. Do you like foxes I saw you looking at a page about some fox god earlier. Maybe I should change you nickname to that. But I guess you would be an Arctic fox then since their fur is white. Actually, that might fit a bit better since their fur is white all year around. Ermines only have-”

“I honestly have no idea what you are saying right now.” I tell Ethan. Honestly it is impressive that he could say all that in once breath.
