Episode 46 - CHAPTER 18 : No units left

In the Cell

The room was tense, filled with an electric silence that buzzed under the fluorescent lights. Darius sat in his cage, eyes blazing with a mix of defiance and pain. Mark and Hugo stood in front of him, their faces etched with a complex blend of emotions.

Mark (urged) - Tell the commander whatever you know, Darius.

Darius (yelled back) - For the hundredth time, my answer is the same. My mouth is shut!

Hugo paused, taking a deep breath before speaking.

Hugo - You know, I've learned about your part in the previous mission, Mark.

Mark glanced at Hugo, puzzled. Hugo continued, his voice steady but filled with underlying sorrow.

Hugo - You know, Darius, after the split, I lost my family. I lost you all. The feeling of being alone made me hollow. When I had no place to go, I decided to enroll in the military because it was the only thing that felt familiar. There, I found faces, old and new, faces that became my family, over the next three years. I trained with them, ate with them, and laughed with them.

Mark showed a face of relief, glad to see Hugo opening up. Hugo continued,

Hugo - And on our first mission, I lost many of them again.

Darius looked up, meeting Hugo's gaze. He saw the confidence and pain in Hugo's eyes.

Hugo - I know that life outside the Dome is harsh, and you've lost so many, but that doesn't mean you're the only one in this abyss of emptiness. We have suffered too. And if you can go to any means to protect your family, I'll go to any means necessary to protect mine.

Darius (yells, voice shaking with anger) - What do you know about protecting, Hugo? What are you talking about? Who the fuck do you think you are?

Mark (interjected) - We are the protectors of humanity, and you should be that too.

Darius looked at Mark, his anger momentarily wavering. Mark continued,

Hugo - You have a family inside the Dome too. Your sister, Sarah, is alive. She’s in the military as well. Don’t you ever think about her? Well, I do, and about everyone else as well.

Darius (yells) - then why did you all never came looking for me?

Darius's eyes widened, his expression shifting from anger to disbelief.

Darius - Liars, (he whispered, then yelled) You don’t care about me! You all left me to rot out there till death. Did the thought of me being alive ever cross your mind? Did you ever try to look for me? No, you all enjoyed your life in the Dome for three years while I begged for a single drop of happiness outside. I bet Sarah forgot about me too. You all didn’t care about anything; you just left me to die. The people I once knew are gone. All that is left are the hypocrites like you...

As Darius's yelling continued, the technician monitoring his vitals turned to Oliver.

Technician - His blood pressure is rapidly increasing. At this rate, his heart will stop due to cardiac arrest.

Mark (yells) - Yeah? And who the fuck do you think you are? You never tried to reach us here as well either.

Darius (yells) - How do you think I could do that? Ha? Fuckface?

Mark (yells) - There is always a way, but you’ll only find it when you get your dumb ass brain on work. Instead you killed as many innocent soldiers as you can, You killed all of those who are capable of protecting humanity and now you are here judging us.

Darius - Protectors of humanity my ass, all I did was because of the likes of you, (yells) so stop acting like you have any right to call yourself as the protectors here.

Oliver's voice boomed through the speaker in the interrogation room.

Oliver - Darius, calm down. We can talk this situation out.

Darius didn’t listen, his rage only intensifying. Mark, equally furious, argued back, their voices clashing in a chaotic symphony of anger and pain. Suddenly, Hugo noticed small strands of sand emerging out of nowhere, floating in air around Darius's cage. His eyes widened in horror.

Mark - If only my hands aren’t tied here, I should’ve knocked some sense the hell outta you.

Darius - Speaking about beating, That day, Instead of all those soldiers, I should’ve killed you.

Mark anger infuriates.

Darius - but remember, when I get out of here, and make no mistake I will, I’ll kill you both and especially you first Hugo. (yells) Trying to talk sweet to me, you use your brain too much these days. That irritates me.

Mark (Holds his fist and about to punch Darius) - Take that back.

Hugo (Holds Mark to stop) - Mark, stop! This isn’t helping!

Darius (In rage) - I’ll kill, every fuckin last one of you, and I’ll continue killing any one like you, because you dissappoints me. I’ll keep killing you all until none the likes of you left on the face of this planet to take a breath.

As the argument reached its peak, Darius’s heart gave out, the strain too much for his body to handle. Blood erupted from his mouth, and he gasped, his eyes wide with a mix of pain and defiance. He whispered, his final words filled with a haunting resolve.

Darius - You all will pay for what you did, Asshole.

In the chaos, John rushed in, desperately trying to separate Mark and Hugo from Darius. But it was too late. Darius's body went limp, his eyes staring blankly at them. The room fell into a stunned silence, the weight of what had just happened settling over everyone. Mark and Hugo stood frozen, the reality of their friend's death hitting them like a tidal wave. Oliver's voice crackled through the speaker again, this time filled with urgency.

Oliver - Get a medic in there now!

Ardonia City

As the flare ascended, Marzell's eyes were drawn to the sky. The clouds began to swirl in an eerie, unnatural pattern. His heart pounded as he watched the formation twist and turn, faster and faster. Then, a bright light pierced the center of the vortex, falling rapidly over the base.

Marzell - The fuck is that?

The light intensified, casting an otherworldly glow over the landscape. The trucks below continued their charge, unaware of the celestial event unfolding above them. Marzell's walkie-talkie crackled to life again.

Pete - Major, what’s happening up there?

Marzell hesitated, his eyes fixed on the descending light.

MarzelI - don’t know, Pete. Just stay focused. We’ve got a job to do.

The bright light descended rapidly, illuminating the night like a second sun. Marzell shielded his eyes, squinting to make sense of the phenomenon.

In the Cell

The air was charged with an unnatural tension as John, Mark, and Hugo stood in the cell, their breaths coming in short, sharp bursts. The sound of the sky being ripped apart filled their ears, a deafening roar that sent a shiver down their spines. John's eyes widened in alarm.

John - Everyone outside the cell now!

he shouted, grabbing Mark and Hugo by the arms and dragging them out of the room.

Barracks

Soldiers were jolted awake by the sound, scrambling to their feet in confusion and fear. Samuel, usually stoic and composed, looked around wildly, his heart pounding in his chest.

Samuel - What the hell is happening?

Soldiers from each barrack rushed into the hallway, their faces pale with terror. They barely had time to brace themselves as a massive explosion rocked the base.

Monitoring room

The shockwave shattered the glass in the monitoring room, sending shards flying in all directions. Oliver, thrown to the floor by the blast, stood up and looked up at the hole in the ceiling, his mind racing. He turned his gaze to the cage, his heart sinking as he saw Darius in his Volkermord form. Darius's eyes glowed with a fierce purple light, and his expression was one of pure rage. He let out a roar that echoed for miles, shaking the very foundations of the base.
