Chapter 4
As Eric, Jackson, and Samuel ran through the halls they saw multiple classrooms already in session. Eric stopped in a huge hallway five feet tall, and ran to the left, and down a doorway. When they emerged from the doorway they were in a huge library, two stories high, with bookshelves everywhere.
“Alright, whatever is happening to you must be connected to the whole knight thing. So we have to look for what the Great Knight had and could do.” Eric explained
Jackson raised a hand, “Since the Great Knight is dead and lost to time, shouldn’t we look in the history section?”
“Exactly, that's where we’re starting. The history of the knights.” Eric led them to a corner of the library where there was a little study area and a sign that said ‘History’ on it. “Start looking around and if you find something, tell somebody.” Eric ran to one side of the area, Samuel ran down one of the hallways to find something.
“Tome you mind helping me out?” Samuel asked,
Tome floated towards some books then turned around and looked at Samuel, then Diya appeared.
‘Tome, no! He shouldn’t know of his power!’ Diya yelled at Tome.
‘Hey don't yell at Tome like that, he’s trying to help me figure out what's going on with me!’ Samuel looked away from Diya, ‘You should too.’
Samuel heard Diya gasp, ‘Fine, but I'm not able to directly tell you anything about what's happening.’
‘Deal’ Samuel thought, and rushed back to the books.
“There has to be something here about it right?” Samuel said to Diya,
Diya didn’t answer she was just staring at something on the wall
“Diya?” Samuel started walking over to see what she was looking at, and found a carving of five circles each with a different pattern. “What’s wrong?”
Diya didn’t even look at Samuel, ‘Nothing, you should go study more.’ Diya floated away, and continued to look at books.
When Samuel came back to the study area with a stack of books, all about different things. Magic 101, Forms of Magic, Dark Magics, Ritualistic Magics, Elemental Magic, and three others Samuel couldn’t see the titles to. Jackson and Eric were already at the tables. Eric had two stacks of books, and a few piles of scrolls. Jackson was looking in a book labeled ‘History of Marshlake’ and other books about history.
Samuel put the books he had gathered and opened Forms of Magic for starters. He saw many kinds of magic, Elemental, Runeic, Hexes, but none of them seemed like the magic he was able to do.
He looked over at Eric, “Anything?”
Eric looked up and shook his head, “Anything that looks connected to your magic seems wrong in some way, but anything that looks different is somehow connected.”
Samuel looked at Jackson, “What about you?”
Jackson raised his head, “Well, there's a magic in here called ‘Elemental’ do you think it could be that?”
Samuel shook his head, “Elemental magic needs the world around you, but I can create light with a flick of my wrist.” Samuel shook his head thinking to himself, “If I can't do the magic they teach here, what will happen?”
Eric looked at Samuel, “I don't know, nobody in history has ever not been able to do this magic. You being the first may… change things.”
Samuel was getting more and more worried, he had to figure out what was happening.
Suddenly a large sound was heard throughout the school, and Samuel looked at Eric for an answer.
Eric looked at him, “First class, Wand Tactics.”
Samuel went wide eyed, “Same.”
Eric ran through the halls with Samuel behind him, they had to split up with Jackson because he had taken all combat classes. Eric made a quick right turn, and Samuel had trouble doing the same. What if Samuel wasn’t able to do any of this? What if they threw him out?
Eric made a quick stop in front of the room, and turned to Samuel.
“Wand Tactics.” Eric opened the door and went into class, and Samuel followed.
As Samuel walked into the room he saw a large classroom with eight long desks in rows, and a chalkboard in the front. The teacher stood in the front in a long orange robe, with clipboard in hand.
“Welcome, Eric back for another semester. This must be our new student… Samuel Knight.” The teacher said, as he looked up from his clipboard to Samuel. He was wide eyed but continued with seating, “W-welcome! To Wand Tactics. I am Cameron Fitzgerald, but you my call me Mr. Fitz”
Samuel looked at the teacher weirdly, and ran over to sit with Eric. Samuel leaned over to talk to Eric, “What’s up with him?”
Eric looked at Samuel like it was obvious, “You're a Knight.”
“Right,” Samuel said, “I’m never going to get used to that.” Samuel looked up to the teacher, who was preparing something. It looked like a dummy.
“This is a very basic drill for those who have done it before, but for the ones who are new you walk to the back of the class and shoot an easy Abovilicric spell.” The teacher said,
Samuel’s whole body tensed, and realized he couldn’t use his wand. He would be noticed for this new, strange talent of his.
The teacher continued as Samuel thought of all the outcomes of this. “As most of you know I choose all the students at random, but this time we’re going from newest to oldest student.”
Samuel looked at Eric, “Am I?”
Eric did a quick head nod, he was doomed. He could easily cast a Star blast spell, but it would look otherworldly to do it from his hand.
“May our newest student rise and walk to the back of the class.” Mr. Fitz looked at Samuel. Samuel slowly grabbed his wand from his bag, and walked to the back of the class. Samuel held his wand out,
“Abovilicric!” Nothing happened, and he put his wand down. He started to walk back to his desk, but stopped to see everyone snickering about him not being as great as they thought. While most people would feel embarrassed Samuel felt diminished, he could do all of these new amazing things and he couldn’t even show them. He looked over at Eric who was nodding, but had a sorry look on his face. Samuel stopped in his tracks and threw his wand to Eric, who caught it. Samuel walked to the back of the classroom, and held his hand at the dummy. His hand started to engulf in magic. Samuel shot a blast of energy from his hand, not just hitting the dummy but destroying the top half of it. Whoops. Everyone was looking at the blown up dummy, and then at Samuel. Samuel slowly walked to his desk next to Eric, and sat down.
“Well, how’d I do?” Samuel asked with a smile on his face.
At the end of class the teacher looked at Samuel, and waved him over. Samuel rushed to the teacher while everyone was exiting the classroom.
“How? That is all I can say, How?” The teacher asked,f
Samuel had no good answer to this question, yet. “I don’t know ever since I came back to Marshlake i’ve been able to do it.” Samuel shrugged, “Pretty cool though.”
“Yes, very cool, you may be one of the most interesting students I’ve ever had. You must come to me some day and ask for a full magical investigation.” The teacher explained, “You may go, but be careful with that magic.”
Samuel let out a breath of relief, and caught up with Eric.
“What did Mr. Fitz talk to you about?” Eric asked,
“Just how one day I should do a magical Investigation thing, nothing important. Right now I have to get to the library, you wanna come?” Samuel said.
Eric shook his head, “I have to get to a Pyromancy class, see you during combat.” Eric ran to where Samuel presumed was the element wing.
Samuel ran to the library, and by ran he meant boosted throughout the entire school. When he got there he went back to the same corner he was at before, and started looking through books. There were many spells that seemed like his new blast spell, but none were exactly on point. He decided to start looking in the scrolls to see if there was anything there he could use. When he got there he was amazed at how many scrolls there were, it was a long isle of limitless scrolls. All put in a certain category. Samuel looked for ancient magic and history mostly, but he couldn’t find anything.
‘There’s got to be something here, something i'm missing.’ Samuel thought to himself,
Samuel pulled out a scroll to find a really rolled up piece of paper. Samuel grabbed it, it seemed to be a small scroll about the size of Samuels hand. He opened it to find a symbol, it didn’t look familiar to any of the other magics he’d looked through. It was a diamond surrounded by four circles, and pulled together into a clover shape.
Samuel touched the shape on the scroll, and it glowed a bright green light. Then several pieces of rock shot at Samuel only to form a small stone over the shape, when it was done there was a stone about the size of a fist over the shape. Samuel grabbed the rock, he could feel this new magic in it. Then he realized he’d seen this symbol before, where had he seen it?
Samuel walked back and forth until he realized, “Diya.” Samuel whispered under his breath and ran through the library.
